June 12, 2017. Being a short 6-week class, the timeframe for adding and dropping the course is shorter than for a normal full semester class. Mr. [redacted] had four weeks to withdraw from MCOM-112 from his date of enrollment without incurring any costs or receiving a “w” on the transcript. According to system records, Mr. [redacted] dropped himself from MCOM-112 on June 21, 2017, which was 7 days past the drop deadline, 9 days into the class and 5 weeks after he enrolled himself into the course.Mr. Slaine states that he signed up for the wrong class indicating that the class “was not clearly stated and described on their website.” The class that Mr. Slaine signed up for was MCOM-112, MediaNews Writing. The class that he said that he desired to take on his petition for a refund was MCOM-1 10, Mass Media and Society. The class titles share a single word in common: “Media.” Otherwise, they have no other similarities that could lead to confusing the two classes. The course in which Mr. [redacted] enrolled is an on-line course. As a result, after the start of the class, Mr. [redacted] had twenty-four hours, seven-days a week access to the class. Consequently, upon realizing that he had enrolled within the wrong course, Mr. [redacted] could have removed himself at any time up to the June 14 deadline. He failed to do either by the withdrawal deadline. After reviewing Mr. [redacted]'s petition for a refund, the Petition Committee felt that there were no extenuating circumstances in Mr. [redacted]'s case that suggested that Mr. [redacted] was unable to withdraw from MCOM-112 by the deadline if so desired. Consequently, his petition for a refund was denied.Aaron Starck Dean of Admissions & Records and Financial Aid Grossmont College[redacted]
