Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2015/08/31) */
On Friday July 17th *** drove his Cadillac Deville into our shop and said the car would not go over MPH*** parked the car in our front entrance and turned the engine offMy certified Master technician drove his car approx
feet into his stall to diagnose the issueOur technician could not test drive the vehicle with how poorly it was runningUpon diagnosing the issue, my tech had to remove the valve cover to check if timing chain jumped a tooth or teeth, also heard some noise internally on the engineOnce the valve cover was removed, he found that the Timing chain guide failed, timing chain jumped on the cam and the vehicle is out of timeThis engine is a interference engine, meaning valve to piston damageRecreplacing engine
What ever happened from the time *** left his house and drove to our shop the internal damage had already happened and by driving it running so poorly with a timing chain jumped and the timing off caused internal failure*** is claiming that WE revved his engine so long and hard in our shop that we caused the failureWith the timing off there is no way anyone could rev the engine at allThe damage was already done
When we tried to explain the situation to *** he accused us of damaging his engine and said "you did this because you do not like me." I am not sure why he would say thatI do not even know ***We have Master Certified technicians that hold them selves to higher standardsMy Top Master Certified technician Joel was the tech that worked on his vehicle and he did nothing wrongHe simply diagnosed that there was and is internal engine damage and it needs a new engine
*** was not happy with what we told him and did not believe the factsHe paid his bill and we told him the car needs to be towed from our shopHe went out on our back lot with his key and tried to start to carThe engine made alot of noise because we still had the top engine valve cover removed
*** told me that he was going to have his friend who is a really good mechanic fix itThe next thing I get is a letter in the mail from *** stating that I either have to pay him $now or he is taking me to court and suing me for $
I do not feel that we need to make a resolution with *** because this 100% was not our problemThe damage was already done
Thanks

Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 7, 2015/09/01) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Their response is ludicrousIt does not address the fact that they opened up the engine without permission and then failed to tell me that the engine was open and the timing chain offThey failed to tell me this knowing that I was going out to get my car and to check it outAnd knowing that I would probably try to start it, since it was running when I brought it in to themThey are lying when they try to say that the timing chain was off when I drove it inHad it been completely off the car would not have started nor runThe timing chain had slipped one cog, the engine was no where near the point of a catastrophic engine failureAgain I repeat, the engine had no sounds nor symptoms of a total engine failure when I brought it in to them to run the codesMy mechanic of years inspected and listened to the engine with a stethoscope before I ever brought it in to themWhen I went to pick up the car, only then was then engine destroyedThey can't have it both waysA car with total engine failure doesn't drive for a half mile to the shopIt won't drive feetIn fact it won't even startA dozen mechanics will tell you that if the timing chain is completely off like they are trying to say, there is no way that I could have driven it into their shop!! They are lyingThey did completely destroy my engine, while it was in their careAnd yes in the past I have not gotten along with Brad in their shopAnd would never have brought my car there, except they were very close to where the problem started, and I saw that their garage door was open
They are liable for the amount of $for all of the reasons mentioned, and mainly because they, unconscionably , did not tell me that they had opened up my engine and then left the parts of the engine lying on top of the engine, with the hood closedHow could it be an accident that a supposedly professional auto repair shop did not tell me this, when they knew I was walking out to start my car??? For this alone they are % liableNotice how they did not mention this in their previous responseHow convenient for them to let me turn over the engine, thus damaging it further, muddying the waters even more with regard to my damaged engine
Final Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2015/09/10) */
I want to start out by responding to ***s insultsWe run an adult business with certified master mechanicsWe have been in business in the same location for over yearsIn the past weeks *** has personally insulted me by calling me a liar and in a text message he called me a putzI have never personally met *** and he has no idea of my character
I run a very professional business that stays busy days a week, hours a day year aroundI work on over cars a day, cars a week and over cars a yearWhy would I or my year certified master technician decide to deliberately rev up and destroy an engine on a CadillacDoes *** think that I was trying to destroy his engine for a sale of an engine? Not likelyNeither myself nor my technician would want to replace an engine in an old CadillacIt just does not make sense
I would never insult someone by calling them namesI can simply say that *** is being mis informedYou can not simply tell what is wrong with a car or see the damage with a stethoscopeWhat *** is not doing is listening to a very reputable shop with certified master mechanics telling him what is wrong with his car
If a customer brought a car into my shop and had a brake grind, We would have to lift the car on a hoist and take the tires off the car and then take off the caliper to do a proper brake inspectionThat is basic diagnosis of a brake job
If a customer brought a car into my shop and told me he had a rattle or clunk in the front end of his car I would have my technician test drive the car, put it up in the air and diagnose the problem by removing the front sway bar and or re clamping or removing exhaust shieldsSometimes we have to disassemble other front end suspension components to verify the noise---THAT is just basic diagnosing
I have a Mazda Tribute in my shop right now that came in with low power and to diagnose the problem we had to cut an exhaust pipe to look inside the catalytic converter to see if it is plugged or not---again-basic diagnosis
*** had his friend check his vehicle out and after that he drove it again and could not go over MPHFirst off if his friend was so sure the timing chain skipped the car should have been towed to a shop but *** wanted to save a tow charge and decided to drive it--furthering damaging the engine
When my technician moved the car into his stall and turned the engine off, he hooked up a computer scanner to check for codesWhen he tried to start the engine again it would not start, my technician tried to start the vehicle a couple times, the engine sounded like the timing chain was offHe removed the valve cover---BASIC DIAGNOSIS, and found that the timing chain indeed jumped a bunch of teeth (timing off)Our Technician than went ahead to find/figure out what made the timing chain jump, and my tech found that the timing chain guide was completely broken and that we found chunks of it in the oil pan, (using a bore scope/inspection camera), We did not nor could have broken this piece as it is a internal part of the engineIn ***s statement he said "a dozen mechanics will tell you if a timing chain is completely off like they are trying to say"I am not sure where *** heard that we never said the timing chain was completly off--we said "once the valve cover was removed we found that the timing chain guide failed, the timing chain jumped on the cam and the vehicle is out of time, this engine is an interference engine, meaning valve to piston damageREC replacing engine
The bill that *** paid at my shop was $That's it $I am sure we did not take apart and destroy his engine for $
When we told *** of the situation and he decided to get a second opinionWe told him to tow the carYes we did leave the valve cover off because who ever was going to look at it after it was towed would want to see the internal damage and you can only see the internal damage by having the valve cover off not just by using a stethoscopeTrying to start a car with a valve cover off is not going to cause damage even on a good running engine*** is reaching for a reason to blame us for a problem that was already there before it came into my shop
Again--I will stand by my original statement---This is 100% not our problem
Thanks

I am working on the problem - I have a call into the owner and we have a new window on order for her Once she calls me - I will set up a time to have her drop off her car and get it taken care of

The owner had the car towed to another Body shop because she was not agreeing on the amount of time it was taking to fix her car. The car was undrivable when it was towed to us and it was a very large repair. We had delays waiting for parts and the insurance company. We had the vehicle approx 80%...

completed when she decided that was enough time that she was going to allow us and then she sent a tow truck for it. I can not appologize to her enough but Car repairs of this kind of damage take more then a few weeks to complete. We have reimbursed the insurance company with a check  for the amount that was not completed.

Is this a serious complaint? I am not sure what we did wrong and or why she waited 10 months to complain. [redacted] has never been in my shop prior to or after 12-14-2016. I can not remember at all what happened on the day of 2-14-2016 but what I do know is I have a bill that shows [redacted]...

brought her 2003 VW jetta into my shop on 12-14-2016 at 7:45 A.M. We did a simple electrical system test. We replaced her battery. We charged her $60 to check the electrical system and replace a new battery----that sounds like a very fair price to me. We also charged her $66.31 for a battery. Try to find a battery for $66.31-GOOD LUCK. The total bill including tax came to $133.44. We delivered the car on the exact same day. I looked back at my schedule on 12-14-2016 and it looked extremely full that day. Middle of winter. No appointment. busy day. I think we did a great job and could not have done better. I am sorry but I truly do not know how or why M [redacted] has any complaint. I do not feel that this complaint is justified and am not willing to refund any money. Tom at Bonfe's Auto
