We have tried several times to explain this invoice to Mr***, and have been very open to communication with himWe understand when customers get upset if the price is shockingly more than discussed in the estimate, but we don't think this is the case with this jobWe did call and leave a message
for him, letting him know that we were planning on beginning his jobWhen I did get to the job, we began the saw and remove the existing drivewayWe than realized that the existing cement was much thicker than we had priced it for removal. IMEDIATLY, I called the owner and said that we started to saw down and the cement was much thicker than I originally thoughtBecause we have to pay to dispose of the concrete, and it was going to take a lot more work and man hours to remove it, I told Mr*** that the job cost would be around $4500-$He said yes, that's ok, and verbally agreed to that new priceHe could have said no and we would have patched what we did. He agreed, so we continued the workHe was very nice and did buy some pizzas and visitedI did NOT charge him for the walkway, which normally would have been about $200. His final bill was $4,In no way, shape, or form did we try to take advantage of himWe value our customers, and take pride in our work. We have pictures of thickness and a receipt from cement disposal

[We did call and leave a message for him, letting him know that we were planning on beginning his jobWhen I did get to the job, we began the saw and remove the existing drivewayMy Response: The Central Vermont Const (CVC) did not get a verbal confirmation to go ahead to begin the work on the driveway after month of no contact. I could have easily hired someone else for the job. When I got the phone call while at work, I was quite upset CVC did not call me ahead of time to schedule time and day for the work. We than realized that the existing cement was much thicker than we had priced it for removal. IMEDIATLY, I called the owner and said that we started to saw down and the cement was much thicker than I originally thoughtMy Response: The tiny section between the sidewalk and main road could have been thicker than normal. I DO NOT KNOW because they had already hauled away that section and began working on the main part of the driveway between the sidewalk and garage. When they pulled up a section of cement driveway to show me the thickness, it was about inches thick, which is industry minimum Because we have to pay to dispose of the concrete, and it was going to take a lot more work and man hours to remove it, I told Mr*** that the job cost would be around $4500-$He said yes, that's ok, and verbally agreed to that new price. My Response: I don't know where he pulled the $number from. If he did, I would have told him to stop the work right then and there. Can you imagine a upward $job suddenly becoming a $job? That's 30% mark up. I did hear from him that it could cost 'upto' $due to abnormally thick concrete (again, concrete was no thicker than industry standard). Since he's already started tearing up my driveway (without my express permission) I told him to go ahead with the work. I never said $was acceptable. It was my intention for him to come back to me and show me exactly how much was the cement disposal costed him and how much it would have costed for a 'normal' thickness driveway. I expected him to come back with a number a lot less than 'upto' $since the driveway I saw them pulling up was about inches thick, an industry standard, not a I've-never-seen-a-driveway-so-thick thickness. I did NOT charge him for the walkway, which normally would have been about $200.My Response: The reason I was so upset to begin with was because at the end of his job he told me that he was going to charge me for paving the walkway*** the owner of CVC and I had an agreement on Monday, 8/that he will throw in walkway pavement for free. His final bill was $4,In no way, shape, or form did we try to take advantage of himMy Response: Please take a look at the attached invoice. The invoice explicitly states 'Paving work, removal of old pavement and repave' as $3600. This is the number I would have easily agreed to, being only $more than original upper range estimate. The next line is 'Bringing a freightliner load of gravel in, loads' as $1100. CVC gave the original estimate looking at a *** Map. I invited the owner to come out in person to give me more accurate estimate, but he declined saying *** Map is enough. I had explicitly told him the driveway was settling and that there's ~inch gap between driveway and garage on the LHS and about inch gap on the right. I would imagine he would have taken into account the amount of gravel needed to raise it up to make the driveway level with the garage even with the information I provided for him (cement driveway min thickness inches + settling). I don't know how many truckload it would normally take, but the way the owner made the invoice tells me that he didn't expect to lay any gravel? He would have just removed the cement driveway and laid asphalt? The invoice does not make sense. His explanation of why the job is costing me $more than original 'upwards' estimate does not make sense. We have pictures of thickness and a receipt from cement disposal. My Response: This is exactly what I was asking for from CVC. I paid them $already in good faith because that's the 'upwards' number we agreed upon. Any number above that would have to be proven to me, and the owner did not provide any details other than I've-never-seen-a-driveway-so-thick-before comment. I emailed back to him stating that if he showed me sufficient proof, I would happily pay for the delta. So please provide me with the pictures and cement disposal invoice. ]
