Water Softener service resulted in leak, resolution offered was ~800$ and charged for visit, requested call from owner 3x (never returned)
Water softer was purchased several years ago (is out of warranty) from GW pump. We had the unit recharged last year but it never seemed to work afterwards so I had GW return after a couple of months to check on the unit. They indicated the computer was out and we paid a few hundred to replace the computer plus the service charge, still the softener was not working. I noticed the unit had been leaking a few drips at a time and over a couple of months had made quite a mess in the garage. There is quite a bit of stuff in the garage so it wasn't immediately noticed unfortunately. When I call GW Pump out I expected them acknowledge responsibility for the damage (they alone had service the unit twice in the last 3-4 months). Instead I was charged for the visit $67.52 and said it would be 900$ to replace the valve since they no longer used the model and could not get parts. Subsequently GW offered a 200$ discount so $700 plus and additional service call. I understood the unit was out of warranty (which is why I did not balk at replacing the computer that went out after replacing the softener filling). I figure the service personnel over tightened the the valve when reinstalling so expected them to work with me with a reasonable cost and no service charges. I decided to look around because the service and experience had been subpar and it never worked after each visit. I brought a brand new computer and valve head Clack WS1 from a competitor for $500 and have had no issues since. The other vendor also told me the computer installed by GW had never been setup and was configured to regenerate every 14 days so never would work very effectively. I was surprised when I got the 67.52 bill for the service call because I expect them to make the previous service calls right. I called GW and asked to speak to the owner, Daniel, and was told he was on vacation and would call me back when he returned in 1-2 weeks. No return call, I called again and left a message requesting a call from the owner (in part because I wanted to discuss the service level since he no longer was doing the service himself and to discuss the bill). The service manager called me and I explained I wanted to speak to the owner. He indicated I would be called back but I not contacted. We did this dance one more time and still not call. I receive the monthly bill and with interest... Its been about 7+ months and I have yet to speak to the owner. At this point I just want the service call charge to go away as I have moved on to another company.

Desired Outcome

Simply want the service call charge for the final visit to be removed. I expected this to be a coming out to repair damage caused by the vendor and not to be charged.

Hi,

Sorry for the experience you had with our company. We definitely strive to deliver better service than what you received. I personally apologize for not returning your call. I have been out of the office on out of town projects, mission work, and vacation quite a bit more than normal these past few months. I did check the our history and do see that I missed returning those calls. I am truly sorry for not responding.

We understand that sometimes a competitor offers a lower price on one item or another. We do our best to provide fair and competitive pricing to our customers. However, sometimes it is not practical to try to match prices of some of the unlicensed companies operating in our industry. I would imagine if you check the credentials of the company you hired, you would find that they are not licensed as a plumbing or mechanical contractor. They likely operate in a gray area of our licensure and regulations laws within the State of Florida.

Although I am not familiar with the exact cause of failure/leak of your valve, most the connections to that particular softener valve use a clip type connections. The leak was likely a result of the age of the plastic. I have this several time in the past. However, I do recognize the frustration you likely had in having one repair completed and then having us back out a short time later and needing further work.

In order to provide good customer service, we will credit your account for the last service visit and any service/late charges. And once again, I am truly sorry for not timely returning your phone calls and getting this matter more promptly resolved.

Lastly, we do thank you for your past patronage and hope you will consider using our company in the future.

Sincerely Yours

Hi,

We are sorry you are having trouble with your well. Unfortunately this is an older well and we suspect an additional problems. We believe that there is a breach (hole) at a deeper depth in the piping of the well similar to what we repaired near the surface. Based upon over three decades working in the water business, we are confident this problem with this well casing (piping) exists further down in the well. When this happens, the well will leak water out when the pump is off. And when the pump is on, this is allowing sand to enter the well and which then clogs your filter.

With the repair already being completed at the location that was completed at, it is not reasonable to attempt to go down any further to conduct a repair at a lower depth. Rather, the proper course of action would be to abandon this well (pumping it full with cement) and then drilling a new well.

The repair was the correct first step since it is thousands of dollars less than the abandonment and drilling a new well. And the repair we made did stop the uncontrolled water at the surface from continuing to leak. The well is likely 220-350 feet in depth and likely has 100-180 feet +/- of piping(casing). The sand that is coming in is almost definitely coming in from another problem with the well itself and not related to the repair.

We previously offered and we renew our offer to offset a portion of the cost of the repair by discounting the well abandonment and new well drilling.

We do want to satisfy your concerns. However, we completed labor, provided materials, and used specialized tooling, and completed a repair that was a reasonable and appropriate avenue to address the problem at hand. There was no way to determine that there was either an existing or going to be a future breach in the well casing at a deeper depth in the well causing sand to enter the well. Even in hindsight we would of still recommended proceeding in the same way as we did when the repair was completed.

Please let us know if you want us to provide you with a price quote for abandonment and new well drilling with a discount to offset some of the cost of the repair which was completed.

Also, as I offered on Friday, I am happy to come out to see what is going on, but I seriously doubt anything can be done to remedy the problems with your existing well. If you want to take us up on this offer please let me know.

In closing, I understand it is frustrating to have a well fail when you first purchase a home. It surely is not an expense that most people plan for. However, this did happen. Most the time we conduct repairs similar to yours, we are able to get many more years life out of a customer's well. In your case, the well piping(casing) must have at least one additional breach and likely in a condition where several addiction breaches may exist or could occur in the near future. Attempting to repair again would be a further waste of your money.

We do care. And if you want me to call you to discuss, I am happy to do that to. A couple weeks ago I was out of the country on an international mission trip and last week was somewhat ill. But I did want to communicate with you. Hence I sent the email. Please feel free to either call me or reply back letting me know you would rather speak on the phone and I would be happy to comply.

Thank you,

***iel
