I personally waited on Mrs. when she dropped off her Dodge Dakota. Mrs. complained that her Dakota was over heating, would stop running, would not start up immediately. Dakota would start running after waiting 30 min. Because of these symptoms, a diagnosis was not clear and could involve different systems. I never informed Mrs. that the inspection was free. I would never state a free diagnosis when vehicle presents with these symptoms. Mrs. never asked me about an inspection fee. On our Menu Reader Board, Courtesy Checks are listed as Free. I'm assuming this is what the customer is referencing. She never asked. Mrs. Dakota had NO antifreeze in the cooling system. The vehicle can be damaged if you run the engine without antifreeze in the system. It was absolutely necessary to add approx. 3 gallons of antifreeze in the cooling system. We did perform a pressure test to properly diagnose issue. Customer called other shops and found a less expensive price for the repair. We used OEM parts. A Diagnosis fee of $45.00 is listed on our Menu Reader Board. $35.00 is a fair price for antifreeze and diagnosis time. I fully explained the situation to Mrs.. She was agitated and did not want to listen. We have the expense of several gallons of antifreeze and diagnosis time.
