My husband and I have just arrived at home from our trip to Solvang, CA. We were very much looking forward to our stay at Hadsten House, but are now deeply disappointed. I will start by saying that we arrived to what we thought was a hotel (since we were paying $300 for the night), but was actually a glorified motel. The rooms all faced the parking lot, which took up most of the property. It was reminiscent of a Days Inn but with the Danish style fcedil;ade, and much more expensive. We were so optimistic about the trip that we tuned this out and got settled into our room right in front of the stairs to the second floor.
The room at first glance looked outdated and smelled really strongly of a bathroom cleaner or air freshener. The fake fire place (no heat generated) looked nice, and the bed looked clean but was not comfortable. The bathroom was very awkward. The door was a sliding wooden door that did not close fully. The toiletries were low quality and the tub looked old and was moldy.
Spending the night there was a very poor experience. My main problem with the room, and the reason why we could not sleep all night, was that the AC was very weak and not fully functional. It was very hot in the room and we had to open the door for a while at 2:30am because we could not get the AC to cool down the room. The other problem that made it impossible to sleep was that the toilet kept running throughout the night and it was very loud. The vent in the bathroom was also very loud. The coffee maker was small and dirty and the caddy was pitiful. They gave us two disposable cups and two plastic wrapped packets with powdered creamer, two packets of sweet n' low and two packets of regular sugar. We did not have enough and that was frustrating, but not a big deal. In the morning it was apparent that the room was badly positioned when people kept going up and down the stairs right in front of our room.
The restaurant has good food but that is the only nice thing that I have to say. I did enjoy the diver scallops with risotto. I requested a particular table because the place was empty and they said that it was reserved. Fifteen minutes later a hostess offers it to people that came after us with no reservation, but they declined. No one ever came for that table, and the restaurant, again, was mostly empty. The food took so long to come out that the very kind waiter gave us a free desert. He was one of only two employees that was pleasant (the other was a waiter as well) and I wish I had his name to mention it. Everyone else, including the reception staff, was hostile. In the morning the complimentary, lukewarm breakfast buffet screamed cheap motel. It was OK.
Although we didn't want to ruin our vacation and put too much time and energy on the negative aspects of our choice of "hotel", my husband and I decided that I should say something because it was not fair that we were paying $300 for this bad experience. When I told the reception staff about the issues we experienced they became very serious and frigid and unapologetically offered a discount. I asked to speak to the manager and they said he was running late but could call me. The general manager called me about an hour later. When he asked me why I wanted to speak with him I asked him if his staff had relayed my complaints to him. He responded with "they said some things but why don't you 'enlighten me'". I felt that this was incredibly rude, mainly because of his tone. After I expressed my frustration and explained the problems he responded with "well, I disagree, I think our rooms are very nice and we have good maintenance, so that's just your opinion. I bet that if I sent a couple of guys to go check it out they would find that everything is working perfectly. So what do you want? He treated me like a liar and made it clear that he did not care about or believe my feedback. I just wanted to leave. We checked out and left with the worst impression of the hotel. It was a waste of money and time. It didn't even give us the most basic of services they should offer: a comfortable place to sleep.
