Looking at the Demo line item I can see where there might be some confusionThe line should have said (time and material $hr) as opposed to (materials and labor)However no one should expect for the work to be done for freeThe cost for tearing down an old stairway and hauling away to the dump is very reasonable$for labor, hauling, and dumpster is a fair priceWe could charge a set price like most other contractors but choose to do it time and material to keep the cost down for the homeowners. As far as the post holes go, the angle of the stairway was changing and new post holes had to be dugAgain rather than charging a set price we do it by time and material because we don't want to overcharge if its easy to dig, as well as we don't know what we are going to run intoSome holes are really easy to dig and others might take half a day because they are built on bedrockWe don't know so we try to do it as fair as we canWe have never had a complaint before and are not in this business to get richWe are a small man crew that does honest work for a livingWe do quality work and do everything we can to make sure things are done right Thanks Halverson Construction

Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ***, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. As the business admitted, the estimate is misleading and there was no effort on his part to clarify anything for me. I continue to dispute his charge for $for removing the old stairway. It was small and something I would have done myself if I had any idea that he would charge me this additional fee. This owner does not take any responsibility for his lack of communication and I fail to see why I should pay for his ideas about what is "fair" and "expected". He keeps mentioning that he has never had a complaint before. After many years of being a homeowner, this is my first complaint as well. I have never before had a contractor fail to inform me of additional charges as a project progressed. I find this whole experience surreal

Here is the estimate given to the customer with the disputed charges clearly stated as a separate time and material charge to be done based on how long it took us, what materials were needed as well has hauling to the dumpThe invoice shows the charges added after the work was doneThis is the 1st
complaint and misunderstood reading of the contract that we have hadIf there is anything else let us knowThanks

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.I have attached all of the written correspondence between [redacted] Co. and me.The estimate sent to you by [redacted] is different than the one I received.  I have attached the estimate I received, which does not have the $50 materials and labor for the disposal fee.  There was no indication to me that I would be charged for the items listed as $0 in the estimate.  [redacted] did not explain anything to me.   I know that he did the same job for my neighbor and she was not charged any disposal fee and I was told that I would not be charged either. I also feel that charging for post holes on top of a very expensive job price is excessive and unprofessional.

Looking at the Demo line item I can see where there might be some confusion. The line should have said (time and material $50 hr) as opposed to (materials and labor). However no one should expect for the work to be done for free. The cost for tearing down an old stairway and hauling away to the dump is very reasonable. $400 for labor, hauling, and dumpster is a fair price. We could charge a set price like most other contractors but choose to do it time and material to keep the cost down for the homeowners. As far as the post holes go, the angle of the stairway was changing and new post holes had to be dug. Again rather than charging a set price we do it by time and material because we don't want to overcharge if its easy to dig, as well as we don't know what we are going to run into. Some holes are really easy to dig and others might take half a day because they are built on bedrock. We don't know so we try to do it as fair as we can. We have never had a complaint before and are not in this business to get rich. We are a small 2 man crew that does honest work for a living. We do quality work and do everything we can to make sure things are done right.  Thanks Halverson Construction
