Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. We hired Luke, based on his representations that he had previously done decks and worked with composite decking, to replace our deck boards.  The agreed price was $6,000.  That included all materials and labor.  We paid him $[redacted] which was to cover the materials to get started.  Once he began, it was clear he was not capable of doing this job in a workmanlike manner.  The cuts on the composite decking were not straight, he installed them improperly so that there were dangerous places for toes to get cut, the stairs were not built to code, he did not use a composite fascia (so they looked terrible), and he installed interior decking with the grooves for fasteners on the outside edges of the deck (also looked terrible).  He indicates he fixed the framing, but our new contractors told us it was still not level by at least an inch and had he continued with the work, it would have looked awful.  Once we saw how he was installing the decking materials, we asked him to stop work.  His contract does not allow him to charge us hourly - there was a set price for the complete job (which he was not capable of completing).  We offered to pay him $[redacted] for the removal of the decking (even though that wasn't completed and he left the old decking in piles in our yard to deal with).  He took back the composite decking, but still refused to pay us back any money.  He therefore charged us half the full contract price in "labor" (since he returned the bulk of the materials), even though the job wasn't even halfway done and he returned the materials.  He also ripped a hole in one of our screens so he could get access to a power source and left that for us to deal with as well.
All in all, I believe we have been more than fair in our offer to let him keep $[redacted] and to return $[redacted] to us.  He misrepresented his abilities and we should not have to pay for work we had to rip out and pay someone else to do again because it was so poor in quality.
Regards,
[redacted] Haas

I was originally contacted by [redacted] significant other [redacted] He had seen some of my deck work, my Facebook page with some of the projects listed and the reviews, I also came highly recommended. He wanted to set up a FREE estimate for me to take a look at his deck that he wanted redone. I had done this. The boards were old, warped, splitting, and starting to rot in a few places. I gave them a few options including to redo the surface of the deck. From there, I gave 2 options of composite decking (lasts longer, less maintenance, etc.) or treated lumber, however the treated lumber is more proned to change in the outdoor conditions. I gave [redacted] the options and anestimate of $[redacted] which includes all supplies, materials, and labor. I received a response back that he would like to go ahead with that but also wanted me to include fixing some screens (take out the old screens and re screen them). I said that I could do that. He went ahead and signed a contract to agree to this and he also put down the required 50%. I gathered a bunch of options for him and [redacted] to choose from for the composite decking. They found one that they wanted and so I went ahead and Iordered it, had it shipped for delivery to their home. They didn't like the decking and wanted something different, so I personally had to haul everythingback, deal with the return, and I went and bought a few pieces of composite decking to lay out so that they could see in person what it would look like. [redacted] didn't care which one was chosen so he left it up to [redacted] to choose. After she picked one, which was the one that I had originally chosen for them but didn't want at that time, I re ordered everything. While waiting for the decking to be delivered, I went ahead and started to take off old deck boards and get everything prepped to be ready for when the composite decking would arrive. I noticed that the apron of the deck wasn't even attached and the stairs weren't as well, this was due to the person that had done the deck before put the deck in crooked and incorrectly. I let [redacted] know immediately and told him that I would fix the issues and tie them into the deck so that they would be secured. I also said that if they wanted the base/foundation of the deck redone, I would need more money as everything would need to be torn out and they wanted the cement slab underneath removed, [redacted] declined.I fixed the stairs and apron and had him look at it. I received a text from him that everything looks great. [redacted] and I had great communication and we talked about everything. The new decking came in and I put down a few boards and had [redacted] come out to look at it to make sure it was something he liked. He liked it and I showed him the special tool that is used specifically for composite decking to tie it into the base boards. Composite decking has to have a certain amount of spacing, ties in a certain way and this tool does it all. I continued to put in more boards and more hours. [redacted] had even come out and exclaimed "Wow, you got a lot done!". I continued to work away. [redacted] continued to monitor my progress and continued to like everything. Then out of nowhere I get a message from him that [redacted] isn't liking the way that the decking is going in. She doesn't like the spacing. I explained to him again that composite decking needs a certain amount of space to expand and contract without warping and that the tool I was using does just that. They wanted me to do a different option, which I told them it wasn't a safe option as they didn't have even base to tie into and so some boards would be free floating without support and if a board were to break there would be a domino effect and more boards would break. [redacted] wanted me to stop with the decking for now so that he and [redacted] could talk about things. So I went ahead and took out 1 screen so that I could replace it. I couldn't waste time and since I already had to deal with decking issues previously I was putting in 12-14 hour days and I had other scheduled projects. I meet up with [redacted] and [redacted] and he wants to continue, she doesn't. Eventually he gives into her and she wants work to immediately stop. She demands $1500 back he wants to just leave things as is. As a contractor this was the most frustrating part that these two were never on the same page and I was always stuck in the middle. She asked me to take away the rest of the deck boards as she didn't want them and didn't want them sitting in her yard. Once again, I had to make a couple trips to personally haul everything back to the store, which then I received store credit. I sent [redacted] and[redacted] a detailed receipt for actual work completed this includes hours worked and for the materials and supplies actually used. This total came out to be a little over $3400. [redacted] was livid and didn't want to pay anything. I said that I was calling everything even and she didn't need to pay for anything more. She demanded the $1500 back and I told her that I had a signed contract for $[redacted] and that I was already out about $3000 which I rely on heavily and that I had shot down other jobs because of this one and that my time is worth money and I only charged her as I previously said for labor and supplies done/used.. I also told her that I would dispose of the old decking that was torn off for free. She didn't want me anywhere near their property or them until she was paid. I kept repeating the same things I said before. She then started to become even more threatening and said that she would come after me. She wouldn't leave me alone. Then when my 1 other unhappy client (Holly Bauer who also filed a complaint) from thousands started to harass me publicly on Facebook [redacted] joined in.They had even tried to contact other clients to get them to contact me, which was uncomfortable and it was awkward to try and explain things to other clients. I reported everything to Facebook and of course everything kept getting taken down.My wife was also being harassed and contacted. It wasn't until people from Facebook began to defend me that they finally stopped especially after more than 1 person told them what they were doing was wrong and we could go after them as they are harassing. Of course the people on Facebook said that there was only one side of the story told and wanted to hear my side because there are only good things that were ever said about me. I refused to give in and say anything due to the nature of the situation. I am not going to give a refund as I did have a $[redacted] signed contract an there is still technically a balance owedfor the labor, services actuallyrendered, and supplies/materials actually used. I take pride in my work and try very hard as this is a small business with just me and I support my large family by myself. It saddens me that people have to go the extremes because they didn't get what they wanted (very I want to have my cake and eat it too)no matter if you even tried to work with them. Thank you.
