Handyman Matters Spokane Reviews (2)

I recently hired Handyman Matters to install a vanity with special top, and sink. After some unavoidable delays, the job was completed quickly and professionally. I An very satisfied with the results and would hire Handyman Matters again.

Review: I received an email from [redacted], the president of Handyman Matters Spokane, with a bid of $639 to remove and install two new ventilation fans in my two upstairs bathrooms. I agreed to purchase the fans prior to install. On April 21, 2014; [redacted], an employee with this company, arrived around 11 o'clock to start the job. Prior to starting this job I made it clear to him that I wanted the vents to exhaust outside of my house through the soffits.I was on the phone with my fiance, who is an architect, and he also was in on this conversation with [redacted] informed me that he did not have his ladder with him today but that he would be able to run the two vent exhaust lines into the soffit area inside and then return the next day or so with a ladder and bring the fan vents lines outside and secure them. I allowed [redacted] to complete the job without interruption. I was on a long business phone call. When he finished, he cleaned the work area and waited for me to be available to complete the transaction. The fans worked. But he told me he had just left the ends of the vent lines going into the soffit spaces inside and he did not think it required taking them outside. I was not happy with this. He said the vents would work just fine this way and this was how the prior vents were placed. I was not happy but paid him by check and did not force the issue. The total for the bill was $778.67. That is $138.67 over the bid. $77.35 for extra parts and tax of $62.32.THE VENTS WERE NOT TAKEN TO THE OUTSIDE and [redacted] needed to do as I and my fiance had requested. I have a lot of winter ice build up in this area of my roof which I suspect was due to the prior vents being placed in the same place as the new ones now. I am requesting that [redacted] return to my home and take the fan vent lines outside to the soffit area and secure them at no extra charge. This is what I had initially requested and [redacted] agreed. In summary, this job was not completed as I requested and agreed upon by the carpenter, [redacted].Desired Settlement: The carpenter, [redacted], who was the worker on this job, needs to return to my home and complete the running of the vent lines to the outside of my home and secure them into the soffit area of my house. I should not be charged any extra to complete this job properly as initially discussed and agreed upon by [redacted] and myself. Thank you

Response:

In response to the complaint from [redacted] called into our office and requested a price to install 2 exhaust fans in her upstairs bathroom. I sent one of my craftsman ([redacted]) out to look at the job. [redacted] came back into the office and we worked a price to install the fans. We sent a proposal via email to [redacted] stating it would be a charge of $639.00 which would be labor only. [redacted] stated she had all of the materials. When [redacted] showed up the site, it was discovered that all of the materials were not there. [redacted] left and went and purchased the extra materials needed. He did explain to her that the venting from the fans would go into the soffits facing the screens. This is well within code. I was told that [redacted] was having her soffits and fascia replaced anyway. When [redacted] finished the job, he asked if she was happy with what he had done and she responded yes.

The extra amount was for the materials that we had to purchase and the sales tax that is always added to our invoices. The priced we emailed to her stated $639.00 labor only + tax. When [redacted] left the jobsite he felt everything was good. That evening he got a call from [redacted]'s finance who on [redacted]s voice mail left a demanding message that [redacted] return the money that they felt they were over charged immediately. He told [redacted] that if he didn't he would come to his house and kick the living sh** out of him. He was very threatening. I fully expected this gentleman to show up at the office the next day, but have not heard from either of them until contacted by you.

I told [redacted] not to call or go to [redacted]'s house. There was no reason to threaten an employee of mine. [redacted] took his phone to the Spokane Valley Police department and they recorded it into there system. Had [redacted] or her fiancé called the office and expressed their concerns that they felt the work wasn't up to what they expected, we certainly would have gone out to their house to see where the confusion is. Had this been handled in a civilized manner, it never would have escalated to this.

I am very interested in what your response to this is. I will not send [redacted] out to their house and may not want to send any of my guys if [redacted]'s fiancé is there. We do want this to end fairly, however at this point, I feel we were upfront with [redacted].

Revdex.com,

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

The worker [redacted] fails to say that prior to starting the job that myself, fiance (on cell phone) talked with [redacted] and we made it very clear to him at that time that we wanted the vents to exit to the outside of the house in the soffit area. He said he did not have a ladder with him due to a car problem but could return in a day or two with a ladder and bring the vents outside the soffit area. I am not replacing my soffits, just the fascia. [redacted] even phoned another worker to see if a ladder would be available this same day and it was not available. My fiance, who is an architect was very angry, but I had no idea he was going to be leaving a message for [redacted]. I get a lot of ice damming in this area of the roof line and I need those vents going directly to the outside and not just situated into the soffit area. I feel that [redacted] did not wish to do the job the way I requested and therefore the job was not completed as discussed. Very poor service in not listening and then not completing the job in the manner that we all agreed to at the onset.
