Harbor Solar Reviews (%countItem)

HARBOR SOLAR sold me a home solar system grossly underperforming than what was promised. I want my agreement/loan nullified & all equipment removed!
Gentlemen,

On June 6, 2019, I purchased a Home Solar System from HARBOR SOLAR. The salesman, Kevin R, told me that the system I was purchasing would provide "nearly 100% of my electricity needs within a few dollars per month" (as based upon my 12-month prior energy usage of approx 14,000 kWh per year).

Over the next two months, my system was designed & then installed by PALMETTO SOLAR (the installation/service company whom HARBOR partners with) and was officially turned ON on August 14, 2019. After one full month in operation, I wrote a letter to Harbor and Palmetto (SEE ATTACHMENT 1 'Letter of 9/13/2019') stating that the system was producing ONLY 57% of my average monthly consumption, and I demanded that either: my system be upgraded (at zero cost to me) to what I was promised OR... that they remove all equipment and cancel the agreement and loan in its entirety.

I followed up that letter with a call to Nick C (customer service rep at PALMETTO) on Sept. 20, 2019. He advised me that my system was designed to produce 8,369kWh per year. I then explained to him that that was NOT correct as my usage is 14,000 kWh per year. He then advised me that the problem was on the sales end, with HARBOR SOLAR, and that I had been misinformed as to my system's performance. I next spoke with Matt Reece, service mgr of PALMETTO, who was kind enough to forward me a copy of the ACTUAL system that was installed (SEE ATTACHMENT 2 'Palmetto Proposal'). This is a document that was supposed to have been disclosed to me PRIOR to my signing with HARBOR. But it NEVER WAS, and I was seeing it for the very FIRST time on Sept. 23, 2019!

Next, please SEE ATTACHMENT 3 'Homeowner Install Agreement' which I signed on 6/6/2019, which on PAGE 1 (FIRST paragraph) states that the system I agreed to be installed is as shown in Schedule 1. BUT Schedule 1 (LAST page) only states: "System Size 6.900, Panel Type 300w All Black Module, Inverter SE7600H-US (240V)". This doesn't tell me anything at all about performance. What describes my system's performance is laid out in COMPLETE DETAIL in the 'Palmetto Proposal' (again, ATTACHMENT 2) which should have been disclosed to me BUT WASN'T! HAD I seen that proposal, I NEVER would have gone to contract with the knowlege it was only capable of producing @60% of consumption!

Finally, on October 16, 2019, Nick C advised me that HARBOR's response to my 9/13 letter & complaint is to add four more solar panels. That would only increase yearly production average to 9,430 kWh (which is still just 67% of consumption). THIS is the best offer that HARBOR is willing to give me!! Once again this is obviously NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I feel that I have been lied to and grossly taken advantage of. System projection details were never disclosed to me prior to contract signing. The signing process in itself was very confusing, consisting of many emails, all using 'DocuSign'. And I signed a loan agreement in the amount of $32,660.00 to finance my purchase (ATTACHMENT 4 'Sunlight Solar Doc'). I did all of this in good faith, and I believed what HARBOR'S salesman, Kevin R had explained to me: that I was buying a system that would produce electricity equal in amount to my consumption; and that I would make monthly loan payments instead of having to pay monthly utility bills, paying down the loan until I would eventually be 'energy free'.

BUT in reality, I am now paying almost DOUBLE; a NEW monthly loan payment of $156.48 PLUS my utility bill which remains quite substantial.

At this point, I am terribly disheartened by HARBOR SOLAR'S dishonesty, misrepresentation, withholding of information, lack of response, and unwillingness to work with me.

Desired Outcome

I am requesting that the Revdex.com step in on my behalf & demand that: 1) HARBOR SOLAR nullify/cancel our entire agreement 2) HARBOR SOLAR instruct 'TECH CU' to nullify/cancel my $32,660.00 loan 3) HARBOR SOLAR instruct PALMETTO SOLAR to come out and remove ALL of their solar equipment from my property!

I spoke with Katie of Harbor Solar and Mary of Palmetto Solar on 11/13. They have offered to upgrade my existing solar system by installing additional panels which, according to engineering estimates, should increase solar production to 91% of consumption. However, this process will require an additional HOA approval and 1-2 months time to complete.

I have agreed to this proposal and I am satisfied with the company's response. Just note that it will require some time for these modifications to be made.

Thank you,

The salesperson was deceptive in his sales practices. He told us solar panels would increase value of our home and would be an easy transfer.
Our salesperson told us it was an easy one sheet of paper if we ever sold our house, as well as that it would up our home value. Not only is this not true, but we have lost out on several deals to sell our house due to the hassle of transferring the solar loan. It is not just one piece of paper, it was a million, and talking to rude people through technology credit union. If you want to sell your house without paying off your solar loan, well, you can't. These solar panels have cost us thousands of dollars thanks to the deception of the sales staff at Harbor solar. They need to be honest about the struggles to transfer the loan of you do not intend to stay in your home or pay it off.

Desired Outcome

They should refund us the balance of our solar panels. We now have a home that is beautiful, yet impossible to sell. Once buyers find out about the solar loan, they have backed out on several occasions.

As soon as Harbor found out about the customer's issues, we reached out to make sure that the customer was taken care of and helped through the process. Unfortunately at this point in time the customer had already decided to sell their home and pay off their solar loan, leaving us with nothing we could do to help. We are sympathetic to what the customer went through and have taken steps with our partners and in our training processes to make this process more smooth for any customers moving forward. Harbor did not intentionally mislead the customer or make any false promises associated with their solar purchase. Everything in the Homeowner Installation Agreement that the customer signed remains and has remained accurate and true throughout the process.

Breakdown of Harbor's response listed below:
On Friday, 9/20/19, Harbor received a negative review on Facebook stating the things mentioned in this Revdex.com review.
That Monday, we reached out to our finance partner (Sunlight Financial) who handles loan transfer documents when a customer sells their home. We explained to them what the customer went expressed in the complaint and they then reached out to the customer to see how they could help them easily through the loan transfer process. Our goal at this point was to do everything we could to make the process better and more smooth for the customer.
When Sunlight spoke with the customer, they learned that the customer had already completed the sale of their home and had decided to pay off their solar loan before selling the home so that they did not have to deal with the loan transfer process. They apologized for the confusion in the process and expressed that they would work to make sure that no customer is treated rudely by Technology Credit Union (their banking partner) as stated in the complaint.
As a company, we wish that we had heard the ***'s frustrations before they decided to give up on the loan transfer as we are confident that we could have helped them find a more smooth way through the process.
Unfortunately, at this point, the customer has already sold their home and paid off their loan leaving us with no way to help.
To address the basis of the complaint- deceptive sales practices- that the solar panels would increase the value of the home and would be an easy, one piece of paper transfer, we stand by below:
We cannot speak to what was said in the home as that is hearsay, but we do not train our sales reps to make promises regarding loan transfers and no where in the homeowner installation agreement/contract do we state that the loan transfer is easy, one page, or that the solar is guaranteed to increase home value.
