Review: I signed a contract for an addition for a $46,900 with [redacted] from Hardy Boys on 10/2/13. I paid him a check for $18,760 and we felt we made a good choice in contractors based on Revdex.com Delaware rating of A+. The check was cashed on 10/7/13, which was the only thing they have done for our job in a timely manner. [redacted] assured my wife Deanna and I that we would have our addition closed in by Christmas and stated they would get started within 2 weeks. We waited and never heard or saw any work through the month of October. We called many times and if we did get a call back, we got the run-around. We finally got [redacted] to stop by to get the drawings, so he could have details we discussed placed on the drawings. I gave him the name and number of the architect who did the drawings, and he said he would discuss with him directly. This never happened. We had very minimal communication through Thanksgiving, and we knew this project was going nowhere. There was minimal communication and no work.

Finally, we heard from Don Hardy after Thanksgiving, where he informed us that [redacted] was not with them anymore and he would be handling the project. I wanted to get out of the contract then, but Don said he would get this project done and it was his responsibility. Since early December, the deck was removed, the hole for the footers was dug, and my condensing unit was disconnected. Since we have had many bad days weather-wise, this is all that has been done. The decking material was never removed, and still sits along with the concrete and pile of dirt in my backyard. I personally have had to pump the water out of the hole 3 times, as none of the contractors come with a pump or a hose or electrical capability. The refrigeration lines were cut, with no caps. The electric was disconnected from the condenser, no circuit was turned off, and the exposed wires were left in the hole filled with water. I did turn the circuit off in my house, but someone could have been seriously hurt. I hope the refrigeration within my condenser was captured when the HVAC mechanic did his work, and I do want this refrigerant back from the contractor. The walls are caving in on all sides, and I am worried about my shed and the trees falling into the hole. The down spout from my roof was crimped, and if I did not get out there and open it up, this could have caused serious damage to my roof and my home. There were so many things that are just not right with this job, and I’m afraid what will come next, so I’ve decided to halt this company from doing any more work at my house.

I received a call from the sub-contractor on Sunday 1/12/14, and he informed me that he would not be back because he had to go to a job where he would be paid. I received a text from Don Hardy on Friday stating that Manny would be on the job Monday. Manny has no intention of coming to my house to do work Monday, as he said he has to go to a job where he will be paid. I was there the day the guy came to get the rented front-end loader. He was there to get the machine and he wanted it on the driveway no later than 12 noon because he had not been paid. The problem with this was the contractor was not completely done digging. I provided him with electric, a hose, and a power washer to get the machine cleaned up so the rental company could pick the unit up. If I did not provide this to the contractor, the machine may still be ion my yard. I had to ask my neighbor if we could drive the machine down their driveway to gain access to my yard. There was no way I was allowing the machine to go back through their driveway without being completely clean. Manny was very conscientious, and I appreciated his hard work, but when it comes to Hardy Boys, I have no faith that they can do this job.

It is 1/13/14, and my wife and I both agree that Hardy Boys Construction was not prepared to do our job, do not have the equipment to do this job, and have never met there written or verbal contract obligations. I would not recommend them to another home owner and feel that Revdex.com of Delaware needs to re-evaluate their rating for future consumers. I called Don Hardy and we spoke at 8 am this morning (1/13/14), where I informed him that he would not be continuing on our addition. I gave Don an opportunity to bow out in early December, he chose not to. Hardy Boys Construction does not meet their business obligations, and their ethics and business practices are definitely in question, as the sub-contractors are not being paid for work completed. The workmanship also is suspect, and they clearly are not hiring 1st class mechanics to perform a safe job at my home. My wife and I know that Hardy Boys does not have the ability to complete our job as agreed upon in our signed contract, and this has been clearly demonstrated from the very beginning.Desired Settlement: Based on my estimates of the workers on the job, this is what I want refunded:

Front-end loader rental $800

Mechanic 4 days (32 hours / $40 hr.) $1280

Helper 2.5 days (20 hours / $20 hr.) $400

HVAC Mechanic 1 hour $40

Total $2520

I want Hardy Boys to refund the remainder of the money I gave them $18760 - $2520 = $16,240.

Review: I hired or signed a contract with [redacted] (project manager) for Hardy Boys Construction on (Saturday ) August 24, 2013 and paid $ 1,800 half up front. [redacted] spent about 30 seconds asking what did the other contractors give me as an estimate and then said "we'll beat it, whatever they are charging you we will beat it, lets cut out the nonsense and not waste each others time." We then spent the next few hours writing up a contract and we both signed it. I added the following day (Sunday) additional wrapping of garage trim and [redacted] replied "no problem". I purchased the necessary items including light fixtures, faucets, battery system for the work to be completed. I attempted to call [redacted] and [redacted] to schedule the work. I also left several messages on their work number and no one ever responded. It was only after my conversation with [redacted] sometime in the morning (Sept. 9) did he mention that he would call me later that day to schedule the work. [redacted] then called me around 1 and said he had bad news. I returned his call later and [redacted] mentioned they did not give the correct estimate and that it would cost double of what I was originally quoted. [redacted] said that "they would not lose $ 5,000 for my job". I then discussed the specifics of the contract and again he replied, that the company would not lose $ 5,000. I then asked for my money back which was charged on 8/24, in the amount of $ 1,800. It has taken a week now to get the money refunded and now it shows on my next credit card statement, which will be due soon. Hardy Boys construction has not called me nor have they attempted to refund the money. What a joke!Desired Settlement: To refund $ 1,800 immediately to my credit card and an apology.

Business

Response:

We do apologize and this matter has been resolved.

Consumer

Response:

Although Hardy Boys Construction did not adequately respond to my complaint or concerns I conclude that I will move on and accept their response and will not be doing business with them in the future.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Review: Hardy Boys sales rep, [redacted] misrepresented their business by stating they were licensed in NJ. They took a 40% deposit and had not begun to file for permits to start the job. Then the owner, [redacted] came to our home and further continued with the misrepresentation of their companies state license. We gave the money the beginning of September and upon finding out the reason why permits were not yet filed, we asked for a full refund. On November 1st we received an email apologizing that they would not be doing the job and assuring us that our request for a full refund had been processed and we would receive it in 10 - 14 days. No work was initiated for this agreement and we never received any refund that was promised in writing by Hardy Boys construction.Desired Settlement: A full refund , additional cost for new charges to do the work, interest accrued and a major complaint lodged with Revdex.com for all potential customers to see.

Review: I made a contract with Hardy Boys to completely remodel my upstairs bathroom including a walk-in bathtub. This was needed for my Mother who lives with me. One, this remodel job took from November to January. He knew this was the only bathroom with a shower/bathtub and we had to stay in a hotel for 4 weeks. One of his contractos walked on my carpet with grease on shoes and now I will have to replace the carpet as the grease just won't come out. However, the BIG issue is the bathtub leaks. This is the issue that has been reported to Mr Don Hardy several times and he keeps putting me off. The water is now coming down through to the kitchen, this will cause mold and other issues. It needs to be fully repaired ASAP. He has been told several times and he keeps saying he will get someone here, but never comes through. The contract says 10 year guarantee and he hasn't met a month.

He never even did a walk-thru as he stated several times and already the floor the grout is loose, the paint is not a good job, the handicap bar is loose. He is not a good contractor, he posted a sign in my yard and originally stated he was Revdex.com accredited, yet here it says he isn't, what gives with that?Desired Settlement: Repair all the leaks ASAP and if he is not going to do that, then refund me my money or pay for the plumber I hire and reimburse me for the hotel costs as well

Review: Hardy Boys Construction finished part of our basement over the summer of 2013. There were many problems throughout the process such as the crew not showing up on days they were supposed to as well as conflict over the work what was requested versus what they were prepared to do. However, they did finish the work (although we had to have someone else come in to lay down carpet; a job they said they would do so that it was comparable with the carpet already present that they were unable to follow through with). Approximately six months after the completion of the work, we noticed that the heat in our home was not functioning properly. We called a heating service to come in and look at everything, which they did on 1/14/14. What he found was that there is an "obstruction in the hue pipe intake, and the flue is pitched backwards exhaust. Couplings not primed and crooked." This was work that Hardy Boys Construction did when finishing the ceiling in the basement. At the time, it was explained to us that in order to finish the ceiling properly, they would need to cut into the pipes and raise them up in order to have the new ceiling level with the existing ceiling. We were told this was work they were capable of doing. We are now finding out, approximately six months later, that this was done very wrong. In addition to the sloppy work, the heating company informed us that if we had not found this problem when we did, there could have been the potential for carbon monoxide to leak into the home because of the pipes not being primed and connected properly. Of course, this news was very upsetting, especially because we have a baby in the home. As soon as the heating company left, we called Hardy Boys Construction. Since 1/14/14, we have left them five voicemails and sent one email detailing our concerns and asking them to remedy the situation and explained the seriousness of (1) not having proper heating in the winter and (2) the possibility of a carbon monoxide leak. In the most recent voicemail, left Monday, 1/20/14, we informed them that if we did not hear back from them by Tuesday, 1/21/14 at 4:00 pm then our next steps would be to file a complaint with the Revdex.com and a claim in small claims court. We feel that we have given them every opportunity to remedy the situation.Desired Settlement: When we first learned of the problem with the pipes and the issues it was causing, our goal was the speak with Don Hardy, owner of Hardy Boys Construction, and have them come out and fix the piping and ceiling. Since we feel we have given them every opportunity to speak with us and remedy the situation, and also because of the heating and carbon monoxide concerns, we are now intending to file a claim in small claims court in order to be reimbursed for the cost of the heating service coming to diagnose and correct the piping as well as the cost of having someone come in to cut out, and then repair, the ceiling.

Review: I signed a contract to remodel my garage with the project manager for Hardy Boys Construction on October 4th, 2013 and paid a $1,900 down payment (half up front).

A month later, no work had been performed and no one contacted me, so I called and was told that the job would be completed before Thanksgiving.

I called again early in December and was told (by the project manager) that he could not believe how long this had dragged on and would call the owner immediately.

As of December 19th, 2013 NOTHING has been done. (contract was signed on Oct 4th, 2013).

Now the project manager’s phone is not accepting calls and no one returns messages left on the business’ answering machine. I would like to ask for my money back, but they either refuse to accept calls or ignore messages on their answering machine.Desired Settlement: Refund my down payment.
