Hay Mutual Insurance Company Reviews (%countItem)

I had two floods in my home in Feb and April of 2018. I called my insurance company who came in and looked at the damage and said that they would cover it. I inquired as to how much my deductible was and how much coverage I had. I was told I had a $500. deductible for each flood/claim and $20.000 coverage for each claim which was lots to cover everything. The insurance had a restoration company come in and tear out half of my house and remove damaged furniture and appliances. I have now lived in half a house with no washer, dryer or freezer or useable bathrooms for over 3 months. After chasing the restoration company for a bill and a quote for restoration they finally came up with it. The bill had over $1000 in charges for things that had not been done and their quote on top of the bill used up all the insurance money for the first flood so there was nothing left for furniture. The insurance company then stated that one claim was only worth $10,000 not $20,000 so there was very little left for the second flood. I hired an air testing company who found that I had toxic mould in my basement but my insurance company and the restoration company don't care even though they sprayed for mould....obviously it didn't work! Now my insurance company is telling me the coverage for the second flood is unlimited'??'??!!!!! How can insurance coverage change from $20,000 to $10,000 and then unlimited'??'??? I asked about the mistakes made on the restoration company's bill and was told they might sort it out in a MONTH! Something smells very rotten here and I want something done now, not in 3 more months.
Product_Or_Service: Insurance claim

Desired Outcome

Other (requires explanation) I want a payout of at least $28,000 which is what is left from the 2 claims so that I can put my house back together and fix the mould issue!!! PRONTO 2 claims, $20,000 each = $40,000 *** bill - $10,290 minus $1500. for mistakes Deductible - $1000 Appliances - $2200 Total = $11990 $40,000 subtract $11990 = $28,010

Hay Mutual Insurance Company Response • Aug 07, 2018

There are 2 separate claims that remain outstanding for *** - homeowner. *** is her daughter and occupies home. I was notified of both claims at the same time - around the time of the second occurrence in April. There is a limit of $20,000 for the claim in basement. This is for water infiltration from an outside source. The claim upstairs is not subject to this limit, as it is from a water system. This is somewhat irrelevant anyway, as it has not sustained damage of that value. Somewhere, that became misunderstood. A restoration company did attend to perform tear out as necessary. This also included removal of furniture. Value of the basement claim may be inflated due to the fact that it was not reported at the time of it's occurrence. In response to consumer's complaint of money all being used up and no funds being available for furniture, nearly $2,100 has been paid to look after her appliances at their choice. This could've gone towards furniture if they wished.
I agree there was a delay in receiving both invoices and estimates as the restoration company was very much behind due to a very heavy workload this Spring.
As far as the actual invoicing of work, I will be discussing this with *** and working to have reduced, as discussed with consumer.
For the April claim (upstairs), they are covered for the cost of damage. They are getting confused it would seem that there is some predetermined amount to be paid but the cost of repairs is what there is coverage for. We do not pay for more than the repair costs estimated just because.
Re: desired resolution, I will continue to work with client to hopefully come to a desirable settlement.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Mr. reply is very concerning. I will not answer his reply as it is a load of crap and a waste of my time. I have done much of the work myself and I am presently waiting for a quote from another restoration company who are quite concerned about the mould and disgusting mess that was left by the last restoration company. Mr. doesn't care! The only thing I don't understand is what we pay insurance for when this is what we get in return! I will not have anything good to say about Hay Insurance until my house it put back together and my furniture returned.

We continue to wait on estimates from the client's preferred contractor in order to move forward with settlement discussions

I would like to say that I did not respond because I was waiting for the new restoration company to send a quote. We have agreed to let this company go ahead with the restoration although ***, the adjuster, has said there is not enough money left on the first claim so I will have to pay out of pocket. When I mad the claim, *** had said there was plenty of money, it would not be a problem. *** did a lousy job, ripped us off and *** is not willing to take more than $1000 off their bill. *** had also asked us to make a quote to replace furniture. Why would he do this if he knew there was not enough money? Before we agree to any payments, I would like my furniture returned so I can clean it and get it fixed>

Hay Mutual Insurance Company Response • Sep 18, 2018

When contacted approximately 2 months after the initial incident, I made no such statement that there was plenty of money or it would not be a problem. Amount of coverage available was always a concern, but there would be no way of knowing until receiving information from restoration contractor.
The reason I would ask for quotes to replace furniture is that the restoration company had marked them to be discarded and I would need to know how much they were worth before considering any payment. At this time, I advised our client(***) any payments towards contents would be funds used from the available $20,000. She decided to have us only pay for washer and dryer at that time as they were a priority.
