After spending several weeks interviewing multiple builders we selected Headrick Construction as the contractor for our new custom home Our final decision came down to Allen Headrick's emphasis on integrity and commitment to follow through Unfortunately, our actual experience differed from expectations
It took almost 2-months to get through the mortgage process, and throughout that time frame we never felt our builder was very engaged To be honest, he seemed more interested in hunting on our land with his boys than working on our project, ending more than one professional encounters with a request to "hunt this weekend" Awkward, but we accommodated
Then, after two months of working with our bank we completed closing and were ready to break ground We had been talking to Allen from the time we first engaged about using a local excavator for our project, and he had told us that was agreeable What he never did was reach out to the gentleman no matter how many times we discussed Well two days before my wife verified with Allen that we would use the excavator we knew, we contacted our excavator who rearranged his schedule to accommodate our timelines That same evening at around pm we received a text message from Allen that he called our guy and told him "he would not be getting the work but maybe we'd still use him for the trees" We were mortified and embarrassed I texted him back the next morning telling him we were embarrassed and expressing our disappointment that he had not been more direct with us My wife then called the man we knew and apologized for the incident
The next day Headrick said he needed to meet me and I rearranged my schedule to accommodateHe arrived at the meeting contract and plans in hand and said he could not work for us because he "doesn't like conflict" Huh? We let you and your family hunt on our land (and I got up at am to open the gate!!), we worked honestly and openly with you and you are quitting because we gave you feedback? Are you kidding me? Needless to say we were dumbfounded
We cannot comment on Headrick's work because, quite honestly, in the 2-month relationship we had he really didn't do anything What we can comment on is his lack of commitment and lack of integrity No, he never lied to us, but he certainly was not direct with regards to our request and chose a last minute text minute at pm to communicate what I assume was an uncomfortable decision rather than speaking to us directly His willingness to walk away from a contract based on our feedback (which was neither rude nor angry) speaks volumes for the lack of integrity and commitment the company places on a signed contract
As my wife subsequently explained to Allen the next day, we did not care about the decisionWe cared about the way it was handled and how we were notifiedNever angryNever rudeShe gave her feedback then handed him a check to begin workThat evening Allen informed me he could not work with anyone who did not trust his judgementWe did our best to put the issue behind us but he would have one of it
What has always fascinated us is how he found my text so offensive that he could not work with us, but not so offensive to keep him from hunting our property the next dayIt is, after all, when he met my wife to get his checkHunting our property with his son
Headrick set us back 6-weeks and could have potentially cost us thousands of dollars Unbelievable from someone who calls themselves a professional
Headrick may get good results on those projects where he doesn't quitWe have no idea, but we believe there are better options out thereBuilders who communicate respectfully but directly, treat you professionally and don't walk away from a signed contract because of something so petty without even so much as the opportunity for discussion and clarification
