HIARC (Homeless and Injured Animal Rescue of Canada, Inc.) Reviews (%countItem)

I recently offered to foster a senior bulldog for HIARC, after Diane D told me he "desperately needed a home".
I filled the forms out etc, but no one came to check my home out. We were told to go to a persons home to pick up supplies, when we entered this supply home, it reeked *** It was roasting hot inside ***.we were given an expired bag of dog food for the foster... ? And left ...
Forward the next day...

When the dog was dropped off to me, by it'S---current owner--- she was hesitant to let him go,mostly because of her conversation she had with Diane.

I welcomed this dogs current owner inside my apartment to meet my own dog and see my home. Clean, cozy and dog friendly.(I used to own my own bull dog, she recently had passed away).
After meeting my self and seeing my home she felt her dog would be very happy with me. I told her her dog would be permanent to my home and I would do everything I could for the rest of his time here..
I took the dog to his first vet apt. Way outside the city. And had been told that he needed some tests done, but they had to check with HIARC.

When they returned the doctor said they were not "allowed to do the requested tests", but would send the dog home with medication for his ears to help the infection.
We(my bf, and I ) took him out to get his nails done, and for a winter coat, harness.
We went to the park, for many truck rides... the dog is very attached to my dog.
The next few days are good then we awake to the foster laying in a large puddle of blood and pee... I call HiARC and text. No answer.
I send the photos of his bed and the massive puddle of blood and pee.
Explaining he has to get to the vet ASAP.

I am told -we do not have any funds available and can not pay for him to see the vet, let me speak to my "retired vet" what are his symptoms...?
I loose my mind...
I call the vet he went to a few days prior and they call me back stating we should definitely bring him in but that someone would have to pay his bill.
I say of coarse! Because he doesn't deserve to suffer. And tell them we'll be in at 11.
Forward the vet, I catch his pew outside when we get out of the vehicle and it's once again full of blood!... the vet think it's stones, ask to do an ultrasound, test his urine and his blood.
After all the tests he is diagnosed with kidney complications but it's a severe UTI causing the blood. He is given pain medication and antibiotics.

Something that would have been easily found the first vet visit, had the tests been done the first vet apt. He would have been fine...

My boyfriend has applied to adopt this dog and has been told he has to pay the adoption fee of $250.

After we've paid for all the dogs vet costs to date, they are asking for this ...

HIARC (Homeless and Injured Animal Rescue of Canada, Inc.) Response • Feb 19, 2020

This story is all false and made up. This foster actually *** the dog from the rescue and a *** to get the dog back is in the works.

I am really concerned that the people running this organization aren't being transparent about their animals right out the gate. There was a dog listed who seemed perfect! She is apparently good with dogs cats and kids. We have cats so if the dog has a known history of being good with cats that's a huge plus. Through interactions with Diane I ultimately decided not to pursue this dog further - solely due to the interactions I had with Diane!!! I sent a message to HIARC to complain about the interaction I had with Diane - she was rude, unprofessional - asked me if I was going to have kids soon because this dog likes kids. And I wanted whoever in charge of the organization to speak with her. I got an email - with Diane's name in the email address - stating that they're Michael and had been present throughout the entire phone call. Told me that Diane had never been rude and was merely asking questions. Their apprehension with us adopting the dog was because this dog HAS KILLED A CAT at the home she had previously been adopted into - and that they had been upfront and honest with me the whole time. Except they were never upfront about that! Why would you list a dog as good with cats if that's happened!?! We had spoken on the phone twice and she knew I had cats........ I also take issue with "Michael" responding to my complaint through Diane's email address...... If Michael had been present why didn't he email me with HIS email address? If he was there or not I'll never know, but it sure seems *** that Diane responded to me claiming to be Michael *** I will never recommend anybody adopt a dog through this organization. Have learned a valuable lesson that not all rescues are the same.

Michael here. First, we refused you to adopt because you will leave the dog alone for 8 hours a day with a cat who's never been with dogs before and your cat may attack the dog. It wasn't you who backed away, we refused you. Second, we never said that this dog killed a cat, it was another dog in the past and we do not want this experience again. Please re-read my email properly. Third, I can use any emails I want in my reply. You are also welcome to call me and I will tell you all this on the phone as well. Here was my email...

Hello Cassie,

This is Michael. I was also present the whole time she spoke with you on the phone.

FYI, we do not have someone else for Lilly so Diane did not try to beat around the bush, she is actually very straight forward and
honest. She was merely just asking you questions with no other intent but to know how well Lilly will fit in your family. Diane
actually spoke well of you guys but the problem was the 8 hours to be alone, especially for 5 days. She will be stressed greatly and
will start barking until you come back home. We sure do not want her to be on stress again. Not your fault at all. Also, we had
problems with cats before where the adoptee said they can handle it and have experience in introducing a dog to a cat. It didn't
turn out well, the cat attacked the dog and the dog killed the cat, then, we got bashed that it was our fault and should never
allowed them to have the dog. So again, we try to cover all the problems, none of which are your fault.

Diane did ask you if you plan on having children because Lilly love children and this is only a bonus if you do, it had no impact on
her/our decision.

I can assure you Diane wasn't rude with you as I was in the same room as her when you spoke with her. The only problem like I said
is the 8 hours of staying alone for 5 days and the cat. We do not doubt your ability to introduce them together but what if
something goes wrong? we are the ones who will be blamed and bashed. If Lilly barks too much and you get complaints from neighbors,
again, it will be us to blame because we gave you a non-stop barking dog.

We sincerely wish Lilly would be part of your family as you guys seems very nice and loving for animals, but, do we take a chance
because of the 2 problems? The chance of Lilly being returned again? HIARC getting bashed?

I hope you do understand our concerned. You guys were not the problem at all, like I said, you seem like a loving family.

Sincerely,
Michael

I fostered for HIARC for 2 years. Each time I was talked down to through texts and communication with Diane was unprofessional. One dog we fostered my sister adopted. One day Trigger slipped under my back yard fence. Walked about 10 steps across the street and the neighbor took him in. Neighbor used Trigger's tattoo in hopes of finding his owner. This was linked up to Diane through HIARC. Myself and my sister drove around for 5 hours looking for Trigger. We pulled our kids out of school to ride around to help. Other family members helped as well. The children were so devasted, as was the rest of the family, as there was no sign of Trigger anywhere. There were many tears shed. Diane ended up sending a cryptic text with "are you missing something?" We thought this was taunting us as it was all over facebook looking for Trigger and asking for help. Finally 5 hours later it dawned on us that maybe Diane knows something. Diane did know Trigger's location. She knew the entire time! Not once did she pick up a phone and let us know he was safe or where he was. She didn't text she knew where he was or that he was safe. *** She refused to give up the location. *** At this time she sent a message stating "if you want your dog back pay me $150." This is when the police stepped in to help. The officer called back a couple hours later stating Diane is not easy to talk to and very unprofessional. She kept demanding $150. As this time we didn't even have proof she had Trigger. Finally 10 hours later the police got the information of his location. He was 10 steps away the entire 10 hours. *** All it took was a phone call. From someone whom claims their dogs are their first priority they allowed Trigger to have the stress of not being with his family and being in a strange garage. My neighbour said Diane claimed Trigger was being mistreated. *** After this Diane posted a picture of my sister's minor daughter (without permission) on Facebook and used the information from the adoption contract to post my sister's full name and occupation on Facebook. Diane lied and claimed she never tried to get money. Many screen shots from Facebook to prove she claimed this. However, my sister has all texts to prove everything. As well she then gave out my full name on Facebook (privacy breech) and claimed I neglected a dog Willow and her 6 puppies and she had to remove them from me asap. This is another lie. As I have all text messages proving that I asked Diane to remove the dogs as I could no longer deal with her and HIARC and would no longer foster. Diane said she could not remove dogs right away and we'd have to wait. If they were in danger why would she leave them? As well I have text messages of her claiming I was her best foster. As well, I have text messages and tax receipts of my providing food and milk for the puppies all out of my own pocket because Diane would not get me goats milk for 3 week old puppies that mom was refusing to nurse.
HIARC also charges 400-500 dollars for dogs that don't include spaying and neutering, any insurance and only first set of shots. Rescues are suppose to control the animal population. Every other rescue includes all the above. The vet bill for Willow and her pups was a small bill and HIARC charged $400 for 5 of the dogs and $500 for 2 pups that had unique eye colors. That sounds like a breeder to me. Not a rescue with the dogs well being in mind. Sounds like it's for profit. Nothing but first shots were included in these prices.
I had a very negative experience with HIARC. Please be aware. Every statement made in this post I have pictures and text messages to prove it all.

HIARC (Homeless and Injured Animal Rescue of Canada, Inc.) Response • May 13, 2019

10 steps across the street and your neighbor doesn't know it's your dog. *** I shall not add anything else as I can not provide the actual text message exchange with this person, ***, who treated us like inmates right from the minute we told her we found her dog. The fee was impose as a result of all her harassment and having *** police *** call us and harass us as well with charges of kidnapping and theft.

I had the displeasure of coordinating the sale of some material with HIARC for some fencing and she cancelled on me 3 times at the last hour each time. Extremely unprofessional, *** haggled for unrealistic prices on below cost material.

HIARC (Homeless and Injured Animal Rescue of Canada, Inc.) Response • Mar 04, 2019

First 2 times canceled due to emergencies, being on emergency calls at all time, more important that what you are selling. The 3rd time you moved the fencing to a new location, too far for me.

I went on pet finder for a dog that was good with cat and dogs. I saw Ellie from Hiarc and thought she might be a good fit with my cat who got along amazingly with my smaller dog....they were the same size. Had no issues whatsoever with my cat and my older simba..best of friends they were until my little dog died. Now that I got Ellie from Hiarc...my cat has to sneak around house,,,,hardly eats,,,,hisses at dog and is forever being chased away. I don't think it's fair for my cat who has never been around very large rough dog,,,,to be constantly under stress,, ,which adds to my stress level. Ellie also attacked my best friend's dog twice and attempted to attack neighbor upstairs dog. Ellie weighs about 55 lbs and when she pounces on Avril with both front paws ,,,cat cries out in pain. Diane from Hiarc said she would let me know if a smaller more suitable dog comes into shelter. When one did recently...I asked if I could get her once Ellie is adopted by someone else. She said no....so I am out $350 dollars and will end up with no dog. She said that she didn't owe me anything. *** Poor customer service and support as far as I am concerned.

Desired Outcome

Replacement Either a suitable dog or find a dog from other rescues that fit my criteria

Our experience with HIARC has been outstanding. We have dealt only with Heather (and Steve) but you could not find a more committed, compassionate and knowledgeable person. Together with Diane, these people's assessment abilities and expertise they do their Herculean best to ensure the best outcome possible for the pets and family. They make and take time to allow for a more comprehensive overview of best needs. They definitely have their ears to the ground and are acutely aware of situations that are not in the best interests of the pets they take into care. *** We have just recently adopted a beautiful puppy who is adorable and, seemingly, happy to be loved in our home. HIARC has followed up already and that is impressive. Thank you, Heather, Steve, and Diane for all your care and attention. "Mika" and Family

This *** rescue, *** had put an ad looking for a foster or adoptee for dog. It was never mentioned in the ad he didn't get along with cats. The owners of this rescue told me he was curious of cats that's all I was told. I went and picked him up and the intro to my dog and him was slow. And we tried to introduce our cats also the first time didn't go well so we took the proper precautions to keep them away from each other. A few days later we where letting the dog outside, in the transition of this happening one of our cats was out. The dog chased her around the house before we could get a hold of him and he ended up grabbing our cat. Ultimately he ended up killing our cat, after we took the cat to the vet we had to put the cat down due to the injuries that where internal.

HIARC (Homeless and Injured Animal Rescue of Canada, Inc.) Response

Three people (HIARC and 2 fosters) warned this foster that the dog will attack their cats. The foster said they are experienced and will be taking the proper precautions. We trusted them and let them have the dog. On the 4th day, the foster called and told HIARC that they have made a mistake and let the dog in the basement, thinking the cats were out. The foster requested immediate removable of the dog or else they will leave him on the street or have the animal control to put it down. As HIARC are many hours away from the foster, it was not possible to get the dog in the time the foster requested, which was 30 min (or else). It would take HIARC 2-3 hours to drive there. *** HIARC finally managed to get someone close to the foster go get the dog. The foster has then called HIARC and yelling nothing but profanity and no dialog was possible. The foster will not provide the vet records for their cat. However, HIARC's dog was abused by this foster and our vet confirmed it. We also have pictures of before and after.
