Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2016/02/24) */

RE: Account #[redacted] under the name of [redacted] and [redacted]
Address: [redacted] Elgin MN 55932
[redacted] called HBC on 2/23/16 wanting to keep the equipment, telephone, internet and video services in...

place at the above listed address and take over the account. When HBC employee Mary explained there was a large amount due on the account, [redacted] stated that she thought they were paying on the account and could simply take it over. It was explained that by taking over the account, she would assume the charges.
Mary contacted [redacted] to ask if services should be disconnected and [redacted] answered that [redacted] was taking over because [redacted] and [redacted] moved out of state. Mary asked if they had been roommates and [redacted] said yes.
Based on that conversation, [redacted] was informed that the account would have to be paid to remain active or start a new account. [redacted] did not accept that answer and asked for a Manager.
Colleen spoke with [redacted] and obtained contact information for the landlord [redacted]. Colleen contacted [redacted] and asked if she would share information on whose name was on the lease for the above mentioned address. The answer was [redacted]. [redacted] explained that [redacted] and [redacted] moved out in January and [redacted] moved in on 2/5/16. Colleen returned a call to [redacted] and stated that the existing account would be cancelled and a new account could be set up under her name. Colleen asked [redacted] what services she was interested in and [redacted]'s answer was internet only. Colleen then offered pricing for different speeds. [redacted] asked what the cost would be with Basic cable and that amount was quoted. [redacted] asked if we would leave service on until Friday 2/26/16 without changing the name so she could think about what she wanted and was informed by Colleen that we could not leave services on without charging for them by setting up the new account under her name. Colleen also explained that this decision was based on the fact that we knew [redacted] and [redacted] were no longer there and not making payments.
[redacted] said she needed to wait for her tax return before she could decide. Colleen explained that HBC would be happy to set up service for her as soon as she decided which internet speed and if she wanted video service as well. [redacted] has not called back to activate service.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 7, 2016/02/24) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I do not accept this response because it is not truthful. Mary stated that in order for me to have any services at this address I or [redacted] and [redacted] would need to pay the $280. I refused that answer because the account was not in my name and I am not going to pay for someone else's bill. [redacted] and [redacted] left the services on in the house when they left. They chose not to cancel the services and HBC said that I couldn't cancel them but I could pay the $280 to keep the services on. Then again, I am not willing to pay someone else's bill. Mary said that she would call [redacted] and [redacted] to see if they would pay. Mary called me back later that day and said "I got a hold of [redacted] and she said that you've been living there the whole time and then hung up on me." Mary said that I would still need to pay the $280 to get any services in the house. I left it at that and called back later to talk to the manager, Colleen. Colleen said that I would need to pay the $280 to get any services in the house. I argued that I should not have to pay someone else's bill that they ran out on. I gave her my landlords phone number to prove that I just recently moved in. She did get ahold of my land lord and she confirmed that I just recently moved in. Colleen then called me back and said I could set up services. I chose not to at that time because she was going to charge me upfront and at the time didn't have the money to spend on cable and Internet. I told her I would call back by Friday to let her know whether I was going to be able to continue with their services. I never asked Colleen to keep the services on in the house. I agreed when she said she would need to disconnect the services since she knew that [redacted] and [redacted] were no longer in the house.
I don't need any further action here but I just wanted to state my side of the story since HBC isn't telling the whole truth about it all.
Very poor customer service! They should have never stated that I would need to pay the previous renters bill. That's a cheating company right there.
Final Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2016/02/25) */
We stand 100% with our account of this situation. It was fully documented at the time of Ms. [redacted]'s call. She has been told that the unpaid balance of $280 for that address has been cleared. She knows she if free to contact us to set up an installation for service. As with any customer, she will be responsible for making the monthly payments for the services she receives.
