High Degree Heating

After purchasing a new home we had High Degree Heating come do an annual maintenance on the boiler. Their service representative told us that our boiler was in terrible condition and needed to be replaced immediately. He said it was rusted out, that there was a cleaning brush stuck inside, that it was rusted out inside, that it had no gaskets and the relief valve could not safely be replaced. He indicated that he could not do the regular maintenance work but said that he got most of the cleaning brush out and fixed the gaskets but that is all he could do and that he had bought us a little time but that the furnace should be replaced as soon as possible because it was likely leaking toxic gas.

We had a different company come out to provide estimates on replacing the boiler. They did not open the boiler but indicated that it sounded like it was running well and said they didn't feel that the boiler needed to be replaced but provided a quote anyway. After that we scheduled a third company to do a maintenance call on the boiler and provide an estimate for replacing it if needed. This company also said that the boiler did not need to be replaced. High Degree Heating was accurate that it had not been well maintained and there were no gaskets, even after High Degree Heating claimed to "fix" that. However, the second company to open the boiler did not find a broken cleaning brush or an unsalvageable rusted out interior. They indicated the back fire wall needed to be replaced. The relief valve that was "so rusted it could not be replaced", came off easily with hand tools. I watched the service representative replace it easily.

We have called High Degree Heating and cancelled our appointment to have them give us a quote for replacing the boiler. We also requested a refund of the $165.00 they charged us to "buy us some time" but their response was that the company we used for the second opinion was not a reputable company. They have not issued a refund.
