Tell us why here...On 11/10/15, Mr*** contacted us via telephone to purchase a new black Samsung over-the-range microwave that would match his existing black Samsung refrigerator. After discussing what models we had in-stock and taking a credit card
payment over the phone, an installation appointment was made for 11/12/
On 11/12/15, our installation technician delivered, installed and tested the new microwave. Testing new microwaves involves testing all functions including lighting, the fan, the turntable, and heating. When testing the heating, we do use a glass of water and run the microwave for a least a minute to ensure it boils.
This is our process for testing all microwaves. The ***'s new microwave tested normallyMr*** contacted us on 12/1/and stated that the microwave was tripping his breaker when in use. This was about 1/weeks after installation. The owner, Trevor Vest, went out on 12/3/to service the unit. The ***'s were not home during the service visit; the door was left open for us, as had been instructed. The owner tested the microwave and after 2-minutes of use, the microwave did trip the breaker. The owner used an extension cord to test the microwave in another outlet. When plugged into another outlet, the microwave did operate normally and did not trip the breaker. This is evidence that there is not an issue with the microwave itself, but with the electrical supply to the microwave outlet.
This is a scenario that we come across regularly when dealing with an older home that originally had a range hood installed. Range hoods only required a smaller gauge electrical wire. Older microwaves, like the one the ***'s previously had installed, were rated at watts; however, they still needed to be on a single circuit outletNewer microwaves that are now rated at or watts require a larger gauge electrical wire. Specifically, they require a 12-wire, 20amp single circuit breaker.
It's always preferred to have any electrical issues arise during the installation process; however, that doesn't always occur. Sometimes other factors need to be in place such as length of time the microwave is in use, other items being plugged into the same outlet series and in use at the same time, etcSince no one was home to discuss this issue face-to-face, a message was left on Mr***'s voicemail. When the owner and Mr*** were finally able to speak over the phone, that is when Mr*** confirmed that when the house was originally built, a range hood was in place. He also confirmed that they do not have the microwave on a single circuit breaker. As when the microwave trips the breaker, the same breaker cuts power to the other outlets in series. For example, the coffee pot. The owner informed Mr*** that they would either need to upgrade the electrical wiring to the microwave and install a single circuit breaker or we could uninstall the microwave and refund their money. Mr***'s response to the refund was "No, no, I'll take care of it. I'll figure something out."
No other communication was had between either party until 12/23/when Mrs*** called and spoke to me, the co-owner. Mrs*** stated her position and did not want a response from me. So I allowed her to speak and I just simply said thank you and good bye at the end of the phone callThe offer to remove the microwave and issue a refund is still available. Any new microwave will require them to upgrade their electric. Unfortunately, as appliances change, electrical requirements change with them and from time-to-time, we have to inform customers that their electric isn't sufficient. We are not electricians and do not perform electrical workAny electrical upgrades needed to have a new appliance operate properly are the responsibility of the homeowner. All other customers that have needed to upgrade their electrical supply have done so willingly*** *** - Co-Owner, Henlopen Appliance
