Highlights for Children Reviews (%countItem)

My daughter had received a subscription for Hello magazine from her aunt (which she LOVED) and we liked because it contained NO ads or promotions. Just simple and great. When she grew out of that, I called to switch her over to Hive Five. We received the first magazine and it was a little over her head, but still good experience.

Second magazine came with a promotional card for a "Free" tote bag and 1 free issue of Puzzle Buzz. I read that postcard several times as my actual job is to draft Terms and Conditions and knew there had to be a catch. I didn't see anything except the words "FREE" on 5 separate occasions so I made the terrible mistake of sending it in.

Flash forward a few weeks and I get an email thanking me for my order of Puzzle Buzz and an invoice for $10.48. I sent an email saying I didn't order this and I would not be paying for it and received nothing but an auto email with a confirmation of the email that I sent.

One week later, I receive an email telling me my order has been shipped with another invoice to pay. I wrote another email and then called. I was informed that the ENORMOUS Terms and Conditions are so big they cannot fit on the postcard so they are printed on the inside back cover of the secondary cover of the magazine- you know the one my child rips up cause it's not pretty to look at? Yep. That's where it's hiding and had I not only received the package and paid the $10.48 and didn't send it back- then I was in for $6/month additional charges for keeping the magazine.

During my call, they did cancel my order and told me not to send money (which I wasn't going to do anyway.)

Granted, my job is to hid certain thing in Ts&Cs but I deal with businesses with millions of dollars of money at their disposal-not children's magazines who deal with parent's trying to do something nice for their kids.

I also cancelled my daughter's High Five because I cannot bear to explain to her again why she won't get something we ordered for her. But I will be using this as a learning experience about what bait and switch means.

It's really a shame because they have good products- so that's what the second star in my review is for.

horrible experience. ended up subscribing twice due to their horrible record keeping/automated emails. wanted 1 subscription canceled. sent several emails. no answer for 3 weeks. 3 weeks later one finally was canceled. now today a week after first subscription canceled some woman canceled the other one. already received an email from someone else saying it looks like your other issue was taken care of. extremely poor service. now my kid has no subscription. they are the goofus to the world's gallant.

I signed up for a free, one item trial of Which Way USA? and 3 months later I have been billed 3 times! After calling, they were kind enough to refund the first couple, but there were already 2 books on their way and I must refuse them in order to not be charged. What a mess! Very misleading advertising about the "free" trial and no apologies. The product is not bad, but it's the shady approach I don't appreciate. I would have considered signing up for it with a little communication about the product.

Horrible, fraud, scam.beware!!!!! They cash your check and never send you any magazines. I have written to this company three times, no reply.
Do not order from this company!!!!!

I had enrolled in the Highlights for children mailing list several months ago as I was hoping to gather information to make a decision on whether or not to purchase a subscription, I never received any emails (and honestly didn't notice) until I had one in my inbox titled "Oops! Our bad!" or something to that effect. It stated that, while I was on the mailing list, I had not been receiving emails and they wanted to make it up to me with a free Club magazine sample. I take the offer and like the magazine I receive. It's an okay magazine, though, not a great one. Weirdly, they started sending out several "TRY A CLUB FREE" emails and I took advantage of a few, I tried the mathmania (which was the best), a picture finder for younger kids, and a traveling (culture and geography) one. A few weeks later we have been charged for several Club subscriptions (anywhere from $16 to $18 each!), so we contacted customer service and after a short correspondence they removed the charges -- only to reapply them the next day!
Honestly, I feel as though I was not informed directly or appropriately that I was apparently NOT receiving free samples, but I was, in fact, making a subscription. I was informed that, while it was my fault, they would try to fix the situation. Very unhappy with this experience. I am still attempting to sort out the reapplication of charges to my account and feel very worried that this company has my card information and is using it so freely.

Do not do business with this company. They are trying to extort money for people with the promise of FREE educational kids for children. They claim they are sending you a fun kit for free and then they never send you anything but they bill you for two separate items. $23 in total for something I've never received and now they are hounding me by mail and email to pay them. Utterly absurd way to do business. Shame on you.

Received an offer for what appeared to be free membership in the puzzle club. I thought it was part of an already existing membership that wasn’t gifted to my daughter by her grandmother. I continued to get notices to pay for a membership that I never agreed to. I Just received a collection notice this week. So now this is on my credit report!! Do t send out some of offer that appears to be free when it is clearly not. From reading other reviews of your company, I’m apparently not the first person to have dealt with this. Please remove this debt and notify appropriate credit bureaus.
