Ho’a Solar offered [redacted] multiple options when she was decided to have her mother's ([redacted]) house re-roofed due to an installation error from a previous solar company that has since gone out of business. Estimates started being given to [redacted] on 10/01/2016....

Estimate 1051 was given on 10/01/2016 for $2,411.65, total after a $650.00 discount granted and worked out with customer after her request for a discount, for only the removal and re-installation of 27 photovoltaic panels and 2 solar hot water panels including all piping, conduit, racking, etc. After continued conversations with [redacted], the previous installation had no type of mounting installed on the system, which could possibly be why it was leaking in the first place, along with roof’s age. Mounting is always recommended on new roofs by roofers and solar contractors. That is when estimate 1054 was generated on 10/01/2016 for $1,806.81 for QUICK MOUNT Q-BASE FLASHINGS KIT: 12 CT. PER BOX, 36 CT. FOR PV, 4 CT. FOR HOT WATER, 2 CT. FOR ELECTRICAL CONDUIT, 12"X12" ALUMUNUM, HARDWARE IS STAINLESS STEEL, BLACK, 10 YEAR MANUFACTURE'S WARRANTY, 50 YEAR EXPECTED LIFE & [redacted]INSTALLED BEFORE ROOF IS COMPLETE[redacted]. Estimate 1052 was also generated on 10/01/2016 for $1,007.89 for QUICK MOUNT Q-BASE FLASHINGS KIT: 12 CT. PER BOX, 36 CT. FOR PV, 4 CT. FOR HOT WATER, 2 CT. FOR ELECTRICAL CONDUIT, 12"X12" ALUMUNUM, HARDWARE IS STAINLESS STEEL, BLACK OR CLEAR (GRAY), 10 YEAR MANUFACTURE'S WARRANTY, 50 YEAR EXPECTED LIFE, & [redacted]INSTALLED AFTER ROOF IS COMPLETE[redacted]. Estimate 1053 was also generated on 10/01/2016 for $729.36 for QUICK MOUNT E-MOUNT FLASHINGS KIT:12 CT. PER BOX, 36 CT. FOR PV, 4 CT. FOR HOT WATER, 2 CT. FOR ELECTRICAL CONDUIT, 9"X12" ALUMUNUM, HARDWARE IS STAINLESS STEEL, BLACK, 10 YEAR MANUFACTURE'S WARRANTY, 50 YEAR EXPECTED LIFE, & [redacted]INSTALLED AFTER ROOF IS COMPLETE[redacted].  [redacted] accepted estimate 1051 and estimate 1054 on behalf of [redacted].  With estimates approved, work was scheduled for Friday 03/03/2017 for estimate 1051, removal of all photovoltaic panels and equipment and removal of all solar hot water panels and equipment. The Quickmount flashings, approved in estimate 1054, were agreed to be left for roofers to install as they re-roofed. This was confirmed via e-mail with [redacted] on 02/28/2017, however, roofers did not install material and Ho’a Solar went back out on Friday 03/17/2017 to install at no extra charge.  When roof was completed, Ho’a Solar went back out on Thursday 03/30/2017 to re-install and panels and equipment for both the photovoltaic and solar hot water system. The way the system works with the QUICK MOUNT Q-BASE FLASHINGS KIT is the QuickMounts are flush to the roof, the curvature appearance of the panels is due to the curvature of the roof. Basically, the roof is not perfectly flat, so the panels appear not perfectly flat. The overall function is, the panels are flush to the racking, the racking is flush to the QuickMounts, the QuickMounts are flush to the roof. This was communicated with customer over the phone after re-installation and again via e-mail on 12/15/2017 when [redacted] reached out via e-mail on 12/12/2017. It was also communicated via e-mail with [redacted], this is something we cannot foresee as we do not know the extent of the re-roof, the material involved in the re-roof, shape of roof, etc. Our only responsibility in a re-roof is the solar portion of the system and ensuring its properly working, removed, and re-installed. The curvature to the appearance of the system is not due to our workmanship, the material installed, or the existing racking layout of the previous system, but to the existing curvature of the roof.  I consulted with our RME, suppliers on the island, and the manufacturer of the product. A situation like this occurs often, is nothing more than cosmetic, it does not affect the system's function, and with existing material cannot be fixed; aka leveled flat. To have the system leveled flat, you would have to remove the panels and install new equipment. That is something that can be done on our end, but at a cost as the labor and materials to do so were not included or approved in any estimates by either party. This was also communicated over the phone with [redacted], as [redacted] was only responsibly for payment and had no communication with Ho’a Solar regarding the removal and re-installation, type of mounting installed, scheduling, or appearance of the curvature after re-install.
