Today I fell victim to the McDonald's Ice Cream Machine Scam.
I used the kiosk at the Plain City McDonald's to order a burger and hot fudge sundae. Since I was dining in, I was charged sales tax. A manage told me that the ice cream machine was down. I told her, "the time to tell me that was before you charged my card." She offered a refund, but when the receipt printed out, she had not refunded the associated sales tax. I angrily cancelled the order for the hamburger and insisted she refund the sales tax on both the hamburger and the sundae. She claimed, "I can't do that."
Ohio law requires the refund of sales tax in this case (Ohio Admin. Code 5703-9-11 (B)). But Holowicki doesn't feel it needs to withhold city income tax or school district income tax for its employees at the Plain City store, so I guess it should come as no surprise that they scoff at this law, too. Fortunately, I paid with a credit card, which gives me certain legal rights in disputing this.
I gave one star because the system will not let me give zero.
