Horizontal Earthworks Reviews (%countItem)

I made the unfortunate mistake of hiring Horizontal Earthworks for landscaping work on my property. For the amount of money that I paid them to have the work done ($3800), I assumed that I was hiring a team of professional landscapers. Instead, I was surprised to find out that Horizontal Earthworks employs a group of very low wage college students that spend as much time standing around goofing off (I was able to record them on my Ring security camera) as they do working, often entirely unsupervised.
Thankfully, I did NOT hire Horizontal Earthworks to install a backyard patio. The owner (Scott Mayer) gave me a quote on a patio installation ($6500) that was more than double the price of other companies (average $3000).

Horizontal Earthworks Response • Dec 12, 2019

This project lasted 3.5 days and involved removing and pouring concrete, adding 12 cubic yards of topsoil, cleaning out mulch piles from 5 trees the customer had another contractor stump grind. Cutting a swale on the east side of the house, replacing 2 window wells and sealing/anchoring to the house. Installed 92 cubic yards of Fescue sod. Our prices are driven by our business operating costs and this project was fairly priced for the work performed. The customer seemed very pleased with the work during the final review. Most of the sod did die because the customer did not water it and I can only speculate that this is the catalyst for the failing review.

The customer also asked me to quote a large back yard patio with a built in fire pit after he told us he had failed to water the sod.

I cannot comment on cost differences of other quotes from unlicensed, uninsured, or underinsured companies and their individual business expenses or what project was actually quoted by other companies versus what we quoted.

Yes we do hire college workers during the summer months to assist our skilled professionals and learn the trade. The college workers ride to the jobsite with our licensed professionals and were not left unsupervised for long periods of time, the statement of often entirely unsupervised is an untrue statement.
We value our customers and take pride in the quality of our work. During the final project review with this customer he did not mention any issues with the work or workers.
