I was contacted over the phone by Mr *** 2-weeks ago. He was having issues with his basement and wanted me to review the as-built condition of the basement and give him my opinion on its structural integrity. I told him at that time that I charge $for a site visit and then
would charge hourly for any further work. He agreed to this fee and so we set a time to meet. I visited the house on Wednesday the 18th of October. I was minutes late due to traffic and did not have his phone number with me to call and let him know. The visit itself seemed to go fine and I was there for at least an hour. After we were done Mr*** wrote me a check for the agreed upon $fee. During the visit I told Mr*** that I would give him some references for contractors. On October 22nd (that following Sunday) Mr*** wrote our general office e-mail address indicating that he felt ripped off. My intention was to give him references for contractors but was still waiting on a call back from one contractor to find out whether or not he still did new basement work. On the 24th of October (the following Tuesday) I wrote Mr*** a memo summarizing my visit and also provided him a preliminary design / construction detail for new basement walls that he can use to get bids from contractors. I am sorry that Mr*** is disappointed in my service but I feel like I have gone above and beyond trying to make him happy. My suspicion is that he did not like paying for what I had to say (It is my professional opinion that he needs to replace his entire foundation). I do not feel like he is justified in getting a refund and in fact I provided him with a preliminary design /detail for replacing his basement free of chargeHe wrote his displeased e-mail to me over the weekend only working days after my visit to his house. I have attached the letter and detail that I sent to him on the 25th for your reference. David H***, OwnerHorn Consulting Engineers
