I gave them a $1000 deposit for their program. I then lost my job so I couldn’t pay the rest. I unenrolled frim the program I had signed up for before it started and I told them to hold on to the deposit until I reenrolled. Unfortunately my unemployment went on and I really needed the $1000 back. They refused to refund it. They sent me a couple hundred but they kept most of it. They said they’re keeping it since I unenrolled after my class started, which is untrue.

The following is documentation of our interactions with Mr. with regard to his request for a full refund of his payment to Coach Training Alliance. We believe that our offer of a partial refund was a fair compromise based on the facts below. Please let us know if you need anything further.

12/31/2018 - Mr. registers for the Certified Coach Program with a class start date of January 28, 2019, chooses one of our monthly payment plans (specifically the three-payment plan) and makes a payment of $899.00. (Please see Attachment 1)

1/22/2019 – Email received from Mr. advising that he would like to postpone his training due to financial issues. No request was made for a refund at this time. Email below.

Hi there. I am signed up for a coaching class that is starting soon.

I've been unemployed for the past few months and unfortunately my unemployment payments

have run out so I have no way to make any future payments at the moment.

I would like to postpone joining a class until I have the means to make the outstanding

payments.

Thank you.

Mark ***

1/22/2019 – A response is emailed to Mr. notifying him we would postpone his training as requested and we would not process any further payments and advising him to contact Coach Training Alliance when he is ready to start the program. Email below.

Hi there. In December I made the first payment of the basic coach training class.

Unfortunately I lost my job so I am no longer able to make the remaining payments.

Even more unfortunately, I am still unemployed and my finances are running low so I’m going

to need a return of my original payment. Once I get back on my feet again, I will reapply for

your class.

Thank you so much.

The course registration fee guarantees your spot in the class. Following registration, you may not transfer classes. You may cancel without penalty if request is received at least 14 days before the course begins. If you cancel 14 days prior to the course start date, we’ll refund the tuition paid. No refunds are made after class begins. Requests must be made in writing, postmarked and mailed to:

Please note the fourteen-day requirement in the policy. Mr.’s class was scheduled to start on January 28, 2019. He contacted us on January 22, 2019, just six days before his class was scheduled to begin. Our classes are limited to just twelve participants. Once a spot in a class is sold, if not given adequate time, we cannot always fill the spot with another student.

2/19/2019 – A response is emailed to Mr. regarding his refund request. In the response, we offered a partial refund of $399 as an exception to the refund policy and advised that the remaining $500 would be applied to a future class. The email to him did reference no refunds are made after class begins. This statement was based on the date his class was originally scheduled to begin (January 28th) and the date he was making the request for the refund (February 18th). Our explanation would have been more clear had we included the 14-day requirement listed in the policy. Email below.

Hello Mark,

Per our refund policy listed on our website, we generally do not provide refunds after class has begun. We can offer a partial refund of $399. The remaining $500 will be applied to a future class. I will put in a request to process the $399 refund.

Hi there. I wrote to you a couple of weeks ago regarding a refund of my deposit. I have yet to receive it or a reply.

I did find it interesting that when I have a question about enrolling, you answer my questions within a day. When it’s about a refund I get no answer.

I will eventually be completing a coach training. Hopefully it will be with you, as long as there is good customer service. Thanks.

Hello Mark,

I actually did send a response back on February 19th and I am not sure why you did not receive it. I will forward it to you now. I am also going to follow up regarding the partial refund I mentioned in the email. I do not know why there was a delay in in being processed but you should see it on your account in the next day or two.

3/21/2019 – Email is received from Mr. expressing his displeasure with our company. Email below.

From: Mark *** <*** Sent: Thursday, March 21, 2019 4:30 PM To: Bernadette <*** Subject: Re: Re:

Hi there. So I lost my job. I had to choose between feeding my son and paying for coach training. I picked feeding my son. You picked keeping my money instead of helping out another human being. That shows me ALOT about who YOU are as a human being. You obviously care more about money than people. That’s what I wrote in my review on Facebook. I can keep reviewing you all day.

If you had refunded my money I would have reenrolled in a couple of months and we all would have been happy. Since you are going out of your way to not help me, you not only lost a client, I’m going to work VERY hard so that people will see the kind of people you are. Hopefully my reviews will help others make informed decisions. And you might be able to delete the one on Facebook but you won’t delete all of them. I’m heading to the Revdex.com next. Even though you might legally be able to keep my money, the court of public opinion will be on my side.

And now I have to find another place for coach training.

Take care.

Due to the nature of the email received from Mr. which included personal attacks on my character and threats to discredit our company via social media and a complaint to the Revdex.com, I chose not to respond to him.

I enrolled in the Coach Training Alliance Program in May 2017. The course that I selected required participating in weekly telephone "classes" as well as doing readings, homework assignments and "sample" coaching sessions. That these assignments were done (the reading, written assignments, and coaching sessions was vetted only by self-reporting but not verified. Attendance was taken at the start of each phone class.

Note that I have been a senior administrator/dean in higher education for many, many years, and have served at ***. I am aware of best practices in an educational context. I was therefore astonished that the assignments were not reviewed nor was there individual feedback on them. There was no verification of sample sessions done other than the self reported initials and dates of these sessions. However, I did that work and more. There is a rule that one cannot miss more than 2 classes of the telephone sessions. I knew that because of family commitments (weddings and such) I would miss two. I made other dates work despite expense to my self (booking hotels for events a day in advance so I would be on the call.) However all classes were recorded and could be listened to at any time. We also had a buddy who could fill in gaps as well. On one occasion I ended up missing a third class due to circumstances-- verifiable by highly credible sources. However, I did listen to the audio and also spoke with my class buddy so do not feel that I missed essential content. However I have been told that I would not qualify for certification unless I took the entire series and all assignments all over again. In every institution where I have served -- at very senior levels-- we have had an appeals process for students who fall afoul of some rule-- often , as in this case, for circumstances beyond their control. This institution has no such process. Death, illness, family issues, workplace conflicts are disregarded if a class is missed while there is no verification of course material completed. If I had called in for the class and gone to "mute" or just dropped the call I suppose that I could have met the attendance requirement without, in fact, being present. I have since learned that I may be able to earn my certification in another manner. My concern is that there seem to be aspects of this program that lack integrity and do not comply with what would be considered best practices in other educational environments. It smacks of practices in the for-profit-educational sector that are considered predatory. I am not sure of the demographic it serves generally but like many for -profit "schools" it may attract a segment that is not being well served by these kinds of practices. Having taken most of the classes I would not expect a full refund but would accept a partial refund and hopefully some attention to the practices that guide this program. Calling it a school would be dishonest.

Tell us why here...
*** was presented with the list of certification requirements in week 1 of the 22-week course which includes the attendance requirements. She then signed off on those requirements through the Virtual Classroom.

The attendance requirements are detailed below.

CTA CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

In order to be eligible for certification, all requirements must be complete within one week after the last day of the Certified Coach Program.

The Coach Training Alliance certification requirements fall into three different categories:

- Those tracked by the instructor surrounding the student’s attendance and class participation.

- Those tracked and reported by the student on the honor system.

- The student’s effective demonstration of coaching skills and the Simple Coaching Model in class sessions as perceived by the instructor.

REQUIREMENTS TRACKED BY THE INSTRUCTOR:

- Student attendance in the Becoming a Coach orientation, which provides two hours of credit towards certification. (If you have not done this, enroll in this two-hour session now.)

- Student’s active participation in at least 10 of 12 Mentoring classes.

- Student’s satisfactory participation in at least 8 of 10 Coach the Coach classes.

- Each student is coached as client twice in scheduled class sessions. Each student coaches another student twice as scheduled in class sessions. Each student has at least two opportunities to act as Primary Observer of a coaching session.

- Passing the Written Exam

- Review of the CCP Reporting Form as record of student’s accomplishments during class.

REQUIREMENTS TRACKED AND RECORDED BY STUDENT COACH ON THE HONOR SYSTEM:

- Active verbal participation during every class attended.

- Attendance in 10 of 12 Mentoring classes and 8 of 10 Coach the Coach classes.

- Complete reading of the Coach Training Accelerator.

- Completion of 80% of the weekly assignments given in the Syllabus.

- Completion of a minimum of 20 sample sessions by end of class (only the first 4 may be “practice” sessions). Use CCP Reporting Form to keep track.

- Acts as coachable client twice in scheduled class sessions. Coaches another student twice as scheduled in class sessions.

- Professional coaching of at least two ongoing, full-fee clients (one-on-one or coaching group) that have hired student as their coach within the time period of the Certified Coach Program. Use CCP Reporting Form to keep track.

When *** submitted her planned absences before week 2, there was a problem. She was going to miss 3 mentoring classes on 5/25/17, 8/3/17 and 8/17/17. The instructor called *** and spoke with her about the issue and she assured him that she would figure it out and meet the requirements. She would still miss on 5/25/17 and 8/3/17 but would not miss on 8/17/17.

*** missed two mentoring classes as planned on 5/25/17 and 8/3/17. Then on 8/14/17 she sent the instructor a note saying she was going to miss the 8/17/17 class as well. He immediately responded and asked her to make other arrangements because this would mean she does not qualify for certification.

She did not respond to his note and missed the 8/17/17 class.

The instructor then sent her a follow up note the day after class letting her know that, as per their discussions, she would not qualify for certification and providing her with some options.

Below is the note that was sent to her.

Saturday, 19 August 2017

3:17 PM: Hi ***,

I hope that you are well. As per our earlier conversations and notes, your absence at class this week was the third absence of a Mentoring Session and as a result, you will not qualify for certification from the program. These requirements were also discussed as part of week 1 and in the Certification Requirements document that you signed off on at the start of class.

There are still options for you. For example:

1. You can still complete the class and open up your own coaching practice. Coaching is unregulated and so you do not need certification to coach. At that point you can even tell people that you completed the Certified Coach Program. You just can't say that you are a CTA Certified Coach, nor can you use the CTA logos on your website, business card, etc.

2. You can contact *** at CTA and arrange to restart the course again. If you do so you will be starting from the beginning and need to complete the entire program again.

3. You can simply drop out of the program.

Give this some thought and if you want to clarify the options with me I'd be happy to discuss them with you.

Regards,

***

*** did not respond to this note.

A week later, the instructor sent her another note again laying out the options for her.

*** also did not respond to this note.

The instructor then called *** and left her a message to confirm how she planned to proceed. He made it clear that because she missed the third class, she would not be eligible for certification. As noted above, he did provide her with other options. It is important to note that if she chose to restart the program, there would be no additional charge beyond the tuition she agreed to pay for the original class in which she enrolled.

On September 18th, *** sent the following message to her instructor.

***,

I have decided that I cannot, in good conscience, continue to be affiliated with a Program/School/Training Program which feels predatory and seems to lack integrity.

I will certainly not use the program's name in any context. However if asked for my opinion I will be honest about my experience.

Best wishes to my classmates.
