Humane Society of Richland County Reviews (1)

Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2016/04/19) */
Contact Name and Title: Melissa H[redacted]
Contact Phone: [redacted]
Contact Email: [redacted] surrendered ownership of her cats to the Humane Society of Richland County on March 28th, 2016. She never had a...

verbal agreement with me(the supervisor) and was informed by staff that we do not board cats for anyone. She surrendered them with the full knowledge that they would be available for adoption to anyone interested.
The only contact I had with her was after my staff's attempts to explain that she no longer owned the cats were in vain. I spoke with her on only that occasion.
There are many false statements in her complaint. We had no verbal agreement. I never called and told her to pick up her cats. We have never called and harassed her. One of her complaints to me was that we never contacted her.
She no longer has ownership of these cats. She voluntarily surrendered ownership rights.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 8, 2016/04/20) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I am requesting that my cats, Arwen, Riddick, Cleo, and Josie be returned to me as soon as possible. As the supervisor knows I have safe placement for my cats. This was our agreement. This should have been the priority for the Humane Society.
As she stated, Josie, the mother, who was not spayed, was adopted out by the Richland County Humane Society. This is not "safe and humane treatment" as their primary mission states.
Because of this and because of the alarming phone call telling me to pick up my "feral cats" on Friday, 4/1/16, I have been in a panic to have my cats returned to me safely.
Again, I spoke to the supervisor on the phone on 3/28 before I brought my cats to the Humane Society. I spoke with her in person when I brought them in. I spoke with her on Friday 4/1 and on Thursday, April 7.

She clearly understood, when we spoke, on 3/28, that I had lost my housing and that I needed temporary placement for my cats. I requested some time to find new housing. She agreed. This was our verbal agreement.

On 4/7 the supervisor called and denied that on 4/1 she told me to pick up my "feral cats". And she denied that I was told by staff that I could pick up two cats earlier that day. She also stated that I should "get a lawyer" and that "if you come on the premises I will call the police and have you escorted off". Again, this was two hours after staff called and told me I could pick up two of my cats!
All of this is so alarming. It is unconscionable to treat anyone in this manner. It is also unconscionable to refuse to release cats to their owner when it is the healthiest option for them.
I cannot account for the Humane Society's harassing behavior to me or their failure to properly care for my cats.

I am still hopeful that my cats Arwen and little Cleo are alive and well. But because of the list of misleading and false statements made by the supervisor I cannot be confident that Riddick is alive or if alive that he was placed safely. I am afraid, as well, that I have lost Josie.

I am certain that by signing the contract (which I do not have a copy of) I did not give the Humane Society or anyone the right to do whatever they want with my cats. I did not, by signing the contract, give them the right to place my cats with "anyone interested". I also did not agree to be threatened and mislead. And I do not accept the supervisor's peculiar and scary behavior inconsistent with the expectations of any employment position.
Oddly, I have been left alone in this terrifying situation. I have attempted to contact a Humane Society board member without a response. I can only assume that they have no involvement with the daily activities of the facility.
The supervisor did agree to give me time to find housing. The Richland County Humane Society failed to offer the service that the supervisor and I agreed to and that I signed the contract for.
They also failed to protect my cats as their primary mission states.
I was told on 4/1/16 to pick up my "feral" cats by the Humane Society. I agreed to do this. I am, again, requesting that my four cats be returned healthy and safely to me.
