Hunt Remodeling & Restoration Reviews (1)

Review: The contractor offered the front stairs reinforce and repair with small deck and steps leading to driveway with completion of 1 week, however nor did the stairs got reinforced, the crew failed to show up several days and when they showed up, they only worked for 2 hours. The contractor kept making several excuses such as the truck is under repair or the cement has to cure, as the job prior to removing the pile of dirt(which was left on the driveway at the main entrance) was not even completed for the first 3 days. Already the cement for the planned retaining wall is very wet with holes and all the stuff is piled with lose nails in the pathway to enter the home. As well as the stairs did not get repaired or reinforced and the job time was running on 2 weeks. We have kids and the area was never taped around for safety as well as the path to enter the home was very narrow with safety concerns.

The job had a deposit of $1300.00 and it doesn't appear to show with the job that was done. We didn't sign a contract, but we signed a proposal. Even if we can't get the money back and want to report this matter for future consumers. Thanks.

Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2013/05/12) */

The original contract called for removing the old decking and installing four piers to build a new deck on. This deck was to have side rails and stairs leading down to the driveway. A retaining wall was to be built on the side of the existing concrete stair landing with a pad so that garbage cans could be placed on it. The original concrete steps were then to be coated with Thorobond and skin coated with cement. The old stairs were removed and it was then that we discovered that there was no support under the concrete stairs. At this point we advised the homeowner that there was a problem and that we would build the retaining wall to support the steps. This was done even though it was not part of the contract. The piers were installed and the pressure treated landing was built on the piers. Our dump truck transmission had broken and was in the shop for repairs. We told the customer in the beginning that the job would take a week if there were no problems. There were major problems with his stairs which we had corrected. The customer was also told that due to the rain when the job was started the piers were taking longer to dry. This in itself took three days before we could begin building the deck. This was explained to the customer. We had about two more days to complete the project and at this point all the major work was completed. The customer called me that evening and stated that the job was taking too long and don't bother to come back. Contrary to their statement of not seeing $1300. worth of work being done, at this point there was over $2200. worth of work completed.

We did everything called for in the contract and the reinforcing of the concrete which was found to be needed only after the old walkway was removed WAS NOT part of the contract. Given the fact that we were told not to come back, it was impossible to complete the job. I have copies of the original contract as proof of this.

Consumer Response /* (3000, 7, 2013/05/16) */

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT ACCEPT the response from the business.)

(1)It was not a contract, it was a proposal.

(2)The retaining wall in the first place was not only for placing the garbage was also for supporting the stairs, which the concrete wall did not get supported as promised. There were holes on the lower part of the wall, which we had to fill later ourselves.

(3)The first time the contractor placed the estimate, he was aware of the fact that the stairs needed reinforcement underneath prior to starting the job, which he never did.

(4)The old stairs were taking apart but left on the driveway as part of debris, which we have pictures. We never got a detail cost of all the equipment and labor.

(5)Mr. [redacted] told my husband when asked for the debris to be removed, the truck was still being worked on. Mr. [redacted] then suggested to bring his trailer to shovel the debris into the trailer, then changed his mind stating it be too heavy. The debris was left uncovered with nails and spikes in front of the house which our children are exposed to hazards within the pathway to enter the home.

(6)The major problems with the stairs were never corrected, instead the contractor's workers placed the 4 piers and the landing without reinforcing or correcting the stairs, we have pictures of this matter.

(7)The fact that the job was taking longer than expected has nothing to do with the rain, we have a diary of the days worked, which prior to the concrete for the piers to be placed, the workers were only doing about 2 hours for the days they showed up. In addition when a call was placed to determine the reason why the workers didn't show up, his answer was that they were completing another job.

(8)The total cost for the job is certainly not even close to $2200.00, since the debris was left on the driveway, the concrete wall and landing for 4'x4' would not add up to that amount, also counting the hours worked.

(9)The concrete, the workers mixed for the retaining wall, was poured on our driveway which dried and harden, still remain until chipped off.

(10)We have pictures of the job that the contractor's workers did, certainly it does not add to $2200.00 at all. We don't recommend this company for the reasons above.
