- I BOUGHT A CAR THAT THEY SWORE NEEDED NO REPAIR AND IT BROKEN DOWN ON ME WITH IN SIX WEEKS.
I have been looking into getting a used for a few months before I came across Hyattsville Auto Auction. Initially, I visited the car lot because I was interested in when their auctions were held. Unbeknownst to me they weren’t an auto auction. Despite Auto Auction being in their name, on the building, on the website. Everything about them said AUTO AUCTION. So that was my first mistake. Dealing with a company that starts off with a lie.
After the salesman Ryan L[redacted] told me and my brother that they were not an auto auction I was ready to turn around and leave. But my brother convinces me to stay just to have a look at what they had. I was in the market for something reasonably priced with no repair necessary. So when Ryan old me that for Maryland residents they will go through the process of getting the tags and taking the car through the MVA inspection. And if the car fails inspection they would fix any issues so I would not have to come out of pocket for repairs. Admittedly, I fell for the pitch. I knew the less a car cost the more repairs it will need and vice versa, the more you pay for a car the less repairs you will need. Ryan showed me a ford sedan that was a little over price but I figured if they will fix any mechanical issues than it worth it. Plus, I had my brother pressuring me to just get it and they had an appealing in house financing.
I decided to go with the Ford sedan, it was $3995, I put down $2000 and finance the remainder all on Friday March 05,2016. Ryan assured me that I would have the car by Monday March 07. I knew that getting the car on Monday was going to be unrealistic because of the weekend. However, I did not know it would have taken a total of 16 days to get the car. 16 days of calling the office to get a variety of no one answering, a clueless woman picking up the phone and a guy name Victor who would give me false dates of when the car should be fixed. Apparently Victor is the guy in charge of the financing department and repairs. Whenever I would call to get a status update no one knew anything and they all told me I and to speak with Victor. He was the only one that could give me answers. I left my number with him multiple times and he only called me once to tell me that the car was ready for pickup. I get there to pick up the car and guess what. The car wasn’t ready! That was my second mistake! After two weeks of dealing with them and getting the run around I was about to demanded a refund of my down payment and wash my hands of them. What stop me was one of the owners decided to give me a loner car until my car was fixed. I had that loaner car for two days before I FINALLY got my car on March 21. I thought the worst of it was over. I told myself that at least it is fixed and it should run with no issues for at least a year. Silly me -_-. Signing the final documents, I notice that the math was off with the tax & title amount. So instead of my initial $2000 for the car I ended up putting $2500 down. Once again another sign that I should have ran.
Now here comes the kick in the teeth. Four weeks into driving the car a notice light white smoke coming from under the hood while I was sitting at a red light. At first I couldn’t tell if it was really coming from under my hood or from the car in front of me tail pipe. When I was able to pull over I popped the hood to check it out but it was no evidence of smoking, not even a smell. So I just assumed it was the person in front of me exhaust. Five weeks into driving the car, I am coming off of 495 and the car just stops. I am completely mind-boggled, the lights are turning on, the engine is trying to start and the gas needle is at a quarter tank. Turns out that my gas needle is broken so it stops at a quarter tank instead of dropping down to E. Which wasn’t that major for me. Yes, it was a huge inconvenience I can live with keeping at least half a tank of gas in at all times. What I can’t live with came at the six week have driving the car. Once again I am sitting at a red light and I notice that smoke is coming from underneath my hood. And this time it is thick white smoke. I immediately pop my hood and make my way to a parking lot to see what the issue is. Looking at the engine block I don’t see and moist spots, smell any chemicals and the smoke stop so I can’t even see where it is coming from exactly. I decided to take it to my sister mechanic, she had great experiences with the mechanic and they have always done good and honest work. They found that the car is leaking oil in the center of the engine block and possibly leaking transmission fluids. Oil leaking on your engine can cost an engine fire, in case you didn’t know. Something that Victor didn’t seem to know either. Yup, the same Hyattsville Auto Auction Victor that was “keeping track” of maintenance journey during my 16day wait tried to tell me that leaking oil was not a concern.
I took my inspection sheet back to HAA to see what they could do about the situation. After all, I am still making payments to them and they did assure me that the car was in good health and it had only been six weeks. Am thinking that one of two things should happen. Scenario One: If I get the repairs done myself then HAA should deduct at least parts or labor off of my remaining balance. Scenario Two: HAA should fix it with no additional charge to me. Seeing how I am still making payments for this vehicle so technically it is still their property and it should be in their best interest to insure that the vehicle is still sellable. To me these were two logical options since (god forbid) if I default on my payments the car will be in their possession once again. How-ev-er, Victor thought that the most reasonable thing is if I cover parts and HAA will cover the labor. With the mechanical issues the car has and given the year the KBB value is only $1800. I have currently paid $2700 do far. That is $900 more than what it is worth on top of the other $1900 I still owe them AND THEY WANT ME TO COME OUT OF POCKET AND PAY MORE! They seriously want me to pay to have the car fixed when I waited over two weeks for them to do “repairs” before I even got the car. I have to ask myself am I being unreasonable with expecting them to cover all cost of repairs? Would an honorable company or proper dealership put me through so much drama? Should I have followed my initial thought of washing my hands of them?
