I had a very similar experience as others, with Occidental canceling our homeowners policy a month after instating and paying the premium. Apparently, after our nightmare I realized that they did not like condition of our roof, and stated roof needed to be replaced by a certain date for policy to remain in effect. Problem is we never received a letter stating so. Our broker we used didn't receive anything either. Fast forward five months later, we had a leak in our roof, and around the exact same time finally received a return check for our premium. At the time I had no idea why we received the check, and then upon further investigation realized we had no home owners insurance for the past 5 months! To top it off, we couldn't get a policy until roof replaced; and that took several months to get quotes and to line up replacement. All said and done, we were without home owners insurance for almost an entire year. I think if an insurance company is going to cancel a policy, more notice should be given (mail another letter, require signature to receive letter). It's a big deal to not have home insurance, and if anything catastrophic would have happened, we would be screwed. Not happy with how everything was handled and would highly advise staying away from a company with these shady practices (as obviously I'm not the only one).

Occidental Fire & Casualty Co. - stay away from this company - my home was not insured for one year and OFCC never send a message to me or to my mortgage company .... When my issue was picked by *** I was told that I have to pay ..... a gap fee because I was without insurance ( just to be clear Occidental Fire & Casualty Co. is/was a primary home insurance in NY state.

Dear ***:
We are responding to your concerns regarding not receiving a notice of cancellation for Homeowner Policy ***.
On July 16, 2018, we mailed a notice of cancellation to ***. The notice of cancellation was for non-payment of premium. The notice advised that to avoid cancelation and keep the policy in force, a minimum payment in the amount of $689 needed to be received before August 02, 2018. The notice of cancellation stated if payment was not received by August 02, 2018, the policy would cancel effective the renewal date of July 13, 2018. The notice was mailed to you via the United States Post Office (proof of mailing included). We have no record of the notice having been returned as undeliverable. A notice of cancellation was also sent electronically to your mortgage company, ***, I.
Because we did not receive payment, the policy cancelled effective July 13, 2018.
Sincerely,
*** Managers

OFCC has right to provide own story but my story is neither me or my mortgage company got a cancellation notice . As you know mortgage company will automatically issue a temporary home insurance to prevent any possible loss but that was never done , OFCC had already issues before this case to send me an invoice to my home address by telling me that such of address does not exist ... nor contact my mortgage company to inform that I still have an insurance on my property... The positive thing is I found better home insurance for less and I recommend everyone to shop around. .

not happy with the service thus far. Inspection conducted was incorrect.
Trying to call them directly and the phone number listed as 800 *** does not work.
Does someone have a better direct number to contact and resolve an inspection situation.

Dear ***:
We have reviewed your account. We are agreeable to accepting the handrail you planned to install on the basement steps. We can offer to reinstate your policy with a copy of the invoice/contract from *** Co., Inc. showing when the work will be completed. We also need to confirm you've had no losses since the policy cancelled April 23, 2018.
Please contact*** Insurance Agency, Inc. at 855-*** so they can obtain the necessary information to have your policy reinstated.
Sincerely,
*** Insurance Managers

As a sub to ***, this company cancelled a homeowners policy less than one month after it was written. The reasons for the cancellation were: 1) Home was still for sale and vacant. The home loan closed 12 days late due to mortgage company problems and was not for sale during that time. Any vacancy would have been from the previous owner moving out prior to closing as I moved in and have been there ever since. 2) Home has an undisclosed wood stove. The home has a UL listed pellet stove which is shown on the Replacement Cost Estimate part of the policy. The stove was not undisclosed.

To Whom It May Concern:

We are responding to your inquiry concerning the above insured.

We reviewed ***'s comments regarding his homeowner insurance policy.

At the time of the inspection, the home was unoccupied and appeared to be for sale. The information in our cancellation letter that stated there was an undisclosed wood burning stove was inaccurate. The wood stove was disclosed on the application.

We are agreeable to offering reinstatement if we can obtain a signed statement confirming there have been no losses since the policy cancelled on January 9, 2018 and *** agrees to allow us to inspect the wood pellet stove.

We trust this response adequately addresses the nature of this inquiry.

I'm not interested in dealing with an insurance company that cannot obtain the facts before jumping to cancellation. I found another company, who accepts my word and digital photos about the wood pellet stove, to insure my home at a competitive rate. I would urge any other potential clients who may to obtain insurance from this company to think twice to avoid what I experienced.

I live in ***, Massachusetts. I had an accident in July 2017. The driver who hit me had Occidental Insurance (police report says it was his fault). When I called in to file a claim, Occidental says that this person cancelled his policy three days prior to the accident. 3 DAYS!! and then I called Occidental again two weeks later, in which they told me this driver who cancelled his policy 3 days before he hit me has JUST GOT ANOTHER POLICY WITH THEM. so now I'm a broke college student without a car while the driver at fault got away with it. Occidental refuses to help me further. This sounds like a scam. Avoid this company at all cost.

Dear Mr.:
***, LLC. is the administrator for the above-referenced insurance claim. Please direct any correspondence or injury related to the captioned loss to our attention.
This loss was reported to *** Insurance on July 13, 2017. It was reported that our insured and another vehicle changed lanes simultaneously: striking one another and then our auto was pushed into another car. Upon receipt of this claim, we noted a significant coverage issue which needed to be investigated. On July 17, 2017, we completed our investigation, determining that the loss occurred outside of the policy period dates. Therefore, we further determined there was no coverage for the loss. On July 17, 2017, we sent you correspondence outlining our findings and determinations.

I am sorry for the inconvenience this loss has created for you. However, it is clear we did not have an active insurance policy which which we could provide coverage for this loss. I recommend that you pursue you own automobile carrier regarding any coverage you may have available under you own policy. We consider this a closed matter and hope this letter addresses the concerns outlined in your review to the Revdex.com.

Horrible company!!! I was in a recent car crash and the other person did not have insurance thankfully I did I was thinking! I thought wrong it's horrible the customer service sucks! They are rude and don't care about their customers! The lady had an attitude the whole time and did not help resolve my issue! They are greedy they didn't give me enough money to fix my car not even close to how much it's going to cost!

While we regret the fact that this customer is dissatisfied, this claim was handled in an extremely prompt and professional manner. The loss occurred on 7.21.17 but was not reported to our offices until 7.24.17. We immediately arranged for the inspection of the vehicle damage, and the estimate was completed on 7.27.18 at the complainant's residence. This estimate covered the repairs of all visible damage to the insured vehicle. We understand the fact that there are sometimes damages that are hidden from the view of the appraiser; therefore, we advised the complainant to take the vehicle to the repair facility of her choosing, and she should have them contact us immediately if there are any supplemental damages. In such case, we will either agree to the supplement over the phone, or we will reinspect the vehicle. In either case, we will pay for all covered damages. It should be noted that we issued our payment within four days of the loss report. For all of these reasons, we believe that this review is wholly without merit.

I believe that Occidental is operating with outdated and incorrect information regarding the condition of our home. Six weeks after entering into a HO3 policy contract with Occidental (and paying in full, up front, I might add), my husband and I received a letter in the mail stating that Occidental would be canceling our policy. The reasons given included: patched roof and lifting shingles on dwelling, and trees "touching and overhanging right and rear of dwelling." I challenge Occidental to actually visit our property and show us personally where EITHER of these conditions is present. I believe that Occidental has never visited the property, but instead is using *** photos from 2014 (you can see the *** copyright date on the image when you view our property on ***!!) to claim that these conditions are present. I am upset about what appears to be unethical business practices on Occidental's part, and right now I have the opinion that even if Occidental were to visit and rescind the cancellation, I would probably choose to take my business elsewhere. This experience has not left me with a good feeling about how Occidental would respond if we did have a legitimate claim.

IAT Insurance Group Response

In Ms. complaint, she indicates that Occidental had not visited the property. However, an exterior inspection of the property was conducted at the insured's premises by an independent vendor on June 15, 2017. Based on the results of this inspection, on July 17, 2017, we advised Ms. agent of the following conditions:

â?¢ Dwellings with a patched roof are ineligible: Dwelling roof has been patched and shingles are lifting.
â?¢ Trees are touching and overhanging rear and right of dwelling.

Photos from the inspection were also included in the email. As of this date, we have not received documentation disputing the above conditions from Ms. agent.
