Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2015/09/16) */
I would like to first explain the Illinois Virtual School (IVS) program. IVS is a statewide, supplemental online program for students in grades 5-12. IVS works in partnership with the local public and private school to supplement the course...

offerings available through the local school. This partnership with schools provides:
1. An opportunity for students to take courses not offered by their face-to-face school, such as advanced placement, or enrichment opportunities;
2. Credit recovery options; and
3. Core, required course, that provide flexibility in the student's schedule.
IVS offers two types of courses for students:
1. Full-service, semester courses. These courses are 17 weeks long (with the exception of summer school) and are taught by an IL-certified teacher.
2. Credit recovery courses. These courses are competency based and are reserved for the student that fails a course and needs to recover the credit. These courses are 10 weeks in length.
Four-week extensions are granted to students taking full-service courses. Attached is the Request for Extension Form. The form does state that the extension may be requested for full service courses only. The extensions are granted per course. The fee of $75/course is used to compensate our instructors for additional time working with their students.
Credit Recovery courses do not have an extension offered. Instead, the student must re-enroll in the course for another 10 weeks. The cost of Credit Recovery course is $70/course. Ms. [redacted] paid $210 for three credit recovery courses which included two different IVS instructors. I attempted to explain that for her son to continue working in his credit recovery courses, he would need to re-enroll at $70/course for an additional 10 weeks of access.
Cost information for both Full-Service and Credit Recovery courses are provided on our webpage at http://ilvirtual.org. The information is also included in the school's IVS Partnership Packet found on our website.
During my conversation with Ms. [redacted], I shared the difference between the two types of IVS courses and the fact that extensions are reserved for Full-Service courses. I also explained the option to re-enroll in the 10-week Credit Recovery course(s). I offered to call her son's school to make sure there was no misunderstanding about our extension policy.
I respectfully deny Ms. [redacted]'s charges that I called her a "liar and I (she) deserved what was give to me (her)." Ms. [redacted]'s son worked in the credit recovery courses for the full 10 weeks. The tuition is used toward instructor pay and platform access. Re-enrollment would be an additional 10 weeks involving IVS instructors. I am unable to grant her request to waive the fees for re-enrollment. Our IVS Help Desk system does track satisfaction rates from our customers (students, parents, and school personnel). In the past 60 days we have resolved 2334 help tickets and have a satisfaction rate of 92%.
