Travel insurance is purchased when you purchase your actual trip tickets, which had not been done.It being "all about the money" is true as long you reuse to let another student who is medical able to travel do so with the same funds.PERIOD

Review: My daughter, [redacted], is in her 3rd (and final year) at University of Virginia (UVA). During her 1st year she signed up with International Student Volunteers, Inc. (ISV) with the intention to travel with them during the summer of 2013. I paid her $500.00 deposit on 10/5/2012 via my Chase Visa Card.

This was [redacted]'s 1st year living away from home she had multiple sinus/ear infections (from living in a different climate than she had grew up in) which trigger her asthma and require her to be on a nebulizer (which she wouldn't have access to in these countries w/o a trip to the hospital - it requires doing the treatment every 4 hours.and she encountered additional allergies on top of the existing ones we already knew about. [redacted] is severely allergic to Nut/Peanuts/Bees and having issues with Eggs, The sensitivity of all of them seem to be getting worse the older she gets. We decided to defer her trip due to the language barriers, another climate change, unknown medical care, and what could lead to life threaten anaphylactic shock or death.

The 2nd year at UVA was even worse! So we deferred again.

Being she is graduating in 3 years this is her final year and I AND HER DOCTOR agree it is just to risky to be that far from home with unknown medical care.

I tried to even ask them to let someone else travel on the funds - but, the answer is no. At that point I think it is all about the money. Not my daughters health or maybe even her life or about the volunteer work just the $$$. Their attitude is disheartening.

I would certainly appreciate them returning my $500.00 deposit based on her medical issues and would be grateful for anything you can do to helpDesired Settlement: refund

Response:

International Student Volunteers ResponseID [redacted]We are sincerely sympathetic to the severity of this participant's allergies and we sincerely regret that she could not travel with us on one of our meaningful and sustainable volunteer projects in Thailand.ISV clearly informs all participants that the deposit is non-refundable.This is stated in the participant's acceptance letter,it's stated in the participant agreement, it's stated on the website, and we state it during our information meetings on campus. All participants are aware that the deposit is non refundable when they sign-up.Additionally,because we understand that participants do have to cancel from time to time, we requireall participants to purchase travel insurance that includes trip cancellation. Our records indicate that this participant did not do so.If she had,she could have filed a claim with the insurance company to receive the $500 reimbursement.ISV stands by our non-refundable,non-transferable deposit policy. We have the policy in place to maintain our sustainability as an organization. Reserving a participant's space on the ISV program in country is one of many expenses that the deposit covers. The deposits our participants pay are spent immediately to cover our student recruiting expenses and program related expenses in country. We make financial commitments to our charitable host organizations and program operators overseasbased on the number of students who contract each year. The deposit money is used to fund and secure program preparations in country long before the participant arrives. We can completely understand the participant's disappointment in regards to the deposit, but we are deeply saddened by the accusation that ISV is "all about the money". ISV is a 501c3 not for profit organization. We care deeply about the life-changing experiences that our students have every summer and the amazing contributions they make each year to the conservation and humanitarian efforts of our international host organizations. ISV receives tax-deductible donations from individuals who want nothing more than to help ISV further our mission. In the unfortunate circumstance of students having to cancel, the deposit money is certainly not wasted. Every dollar that ISV takes in furthers our mission to support sustainable development iniiitiatives around the world through life-changing volunteer and responsible adventure travel programs designed to positively change our world and to result in more active global citizens.[redacted]USA Office Administrative Director
