Jackson Carpentry Reviews (1)

I hired [redacted] of Jackson Carpentry,I was referred by a company called [redacted] had Mr.[redacted] to install tile in my kitchen. He gave me a bid and I accepted it.He began work on Monday Jan. 27th 2014.I was not satisfied with his work. The tiles are visibly uneven and off center.I asked him what he was planning to do about it and he told me he would chisel out the old tile and put new ones in at no cost.I asked a professional tile company if this is something he should do and they said absolutely not. They also came out and assessed the damage and said he used the wrong backing board for large 20inch tiles and also used the wrong mortar for the larger heavier tiles. He also neglected to use a product called "leveler' which would have solved most of the problems. He also charged me for disposal of the old tiles even though he clearly said I would not be charged for debris fee in the contract.I never got a physical contract from him either,he said his printer was broken. So I never signed anything.Which I know puts me at his mercy. But I do have his e-mail to me with his quotes and texts from him stating that he was coming to my house to work.He also advertises he is licensed and insured but I am having a hard time proving that fact online thus far.I would like you to check into his business promptly.Desired SettlementI would like to receive my money back $1,450 to buy new tiles to re install by a professional.Business Response 2/26/2014Re: Case #XXXXXXXXI sent the homeowner 2 bids on January 23, 2014 via email. The one bid was for installing tile in his kitchen and the 2nd bid to install tile in his bathroom. He telephonically accepted my bids. I commenced to start the kitchen tile installation on January 27, 2014. On Monday, January 27, 2104, he gave me a deposit of $500.00 as per my bid.Throughout the duration of the job, he inspected the progress of the job on a regular basis and praised my work. He also asked me to repair the damage to the storage room floor which was not part of the bid. We agreed that he would pay me for that work at the end of the job (no amount was mentioned).Upon finishing the job on February 4, 2014, the homeowner brought it to my attention that a few tiles were uneven. I said that I would come back to fix it before I started the next project, which he agreed to. Despite that, he paid me the balance of $950 for the tile job. He also wanted to give me the full amount for the next job, when I informed him that I needed to break away from his job because I had an emergency to take care of. I declined to take the money. We parted with the understanding that I would come back the following Monday to fix the tile, apply the sealer and install the threshold. We also agreed that I would reinstall the cabinets after he painted them.A few days later, I received a phone call from the homeowner telling me that he went to [redacted]'s [redacted] and found the name of a tile installer. This person advised him that I did everything wrong and that this person could have done the job for $950. The homeowner demanded that I give him $500 back. He was cursing and screaming at me.I called him back and told him that I am not giving him the $500 back because he accepted the bid and that it was unfair of him to demand money back just because another contractor told him after the fact that the contractor could have done it for less. I He got upset and hung up on me.A few days later, he called me back and asked if I could at least come back to put down the sealer and the threshold and put the cabinets back.Originally I agreed to come back to do what he had asked and I told him that I would call him to schedule a time with him. I subsequently, decided that I did not feel comfortable going back to his house given his volatility. I however never called him back and he also has not made contact with me since. It is his lack of business sense (paying for a job in full that he was unsatisfied with) that has resulted in this situation.I take pride in my work and take full responsibility for my jobs. I was initially willing to comeback to make any and all corrections. First he agreed, then he refused my offer to come back and then he evidently changed his mind and wanted me to come back again.First he demanded $500.00 back and now he demands $1450 back. I acknowledge that I did not finish the last portion of the job (apply the sealer, install threshold and reinstall the cabinets) and I am willing to give back $250. Please keep in mind that I have not been paid for the extra work of repairing the storage room floor. Please advise how to proceed.Sincerely,
