I had Jim Marquis install stone around my fireplace His initial estimate was $2400, but then when I didn't have him do a bunch of other work, he jacked the price up to $ After waiting over months to have the job done, he offered me a $discount for waiting so long, only to then "add" the price of the mantle (which was already supposed to be included in the original quote) - and guess what? The mantle price increase was exactly $ How convenient! In addition, Jim shows a bit of an attitude if you ask any questions regarding the job I gave Jim a photograph of exactly what we were looking for - and we ordered the exact stone in the photograph - but the end result was nowhere near the quality or look of the photograph The stones surrounding the fireplace opening were a special accent stone Jim did not order the correct stones necessary to replicate the surround as shown in the photograph and jury rigged the ones he got to fit - and he installed them without mortar (also as shown in the photo) The end result is nowhere near what we asked for I texted Jim after the job was done to ask what I needed to do to have the surround mortared, but he has not answered my text I suspect that he just doesn't want to mess with it because it wasn't a million dollar job and because we had the audacity to ask him questions while he was working In any case, I would not recommend using Jim Marquis Masonry
I spent over $for stone work performed by Jim M [redacted] The first phase was part of the front of house covered with stoneAt this point, the job looks good but still needed to be sealed with sealer.Phase #was a big fireplace and a bar covered with stoneThe stone looks good but the Hearth was not put leveled and Jim M [redacted] said he will correct when phase # will be doneThe phase was a much smaller job that was a small fireplace that needed to be covered with stoneThis phase took a much more dramatic endingJim started on a monday morning at am to do the workAt 7:i got a rude text message requesting water access when water was available at a turn of a knobAt 7:i received a phone call from my neighbor complaining about Jim loud voice and cursing at his workers.At 8:am I pulled in the job and talked to his workers as he was not thereI make them aware that the Hearth of the fireplace project was much thicker than the sample we had on site.I also noticed they were using no protection to care for my all new travertine floor where they put all the stones and mix concrete on top of it .The attention and caring was very disturbing compare to what I got on phase and 2!!The workers complained about they boss bad mood and attitude and I was victim of it a few minutes laterMr M [redacted] called me using the F word a dozen of time complaining he was not making money on this little" F" project and that he he did not want to do it He said he was not going to replaced the Hearth he wrongfully sized and hang up the phoneI had no time to even debate or say a wordAt that point I was upset enough and told his workers to wrap up and leave the propertyIn no case I was going to let him do the job with such nasty attitude to have a bad end result.Mr M [redacted] came to the house and took all the material I paid for and his tools and left very aggressively.Mr M [redacted] forgot I spent $with him and dare to complain he was not making money!!! I always paid him what he wanted and even when we negotiated a bit I still paid him more that what we agreed on .As a physical therapist , I advised Mr M [redacted] to stop using steroids as he lift weight and obvious physical usage and explain him that it was the cause of his aggressiveness but he did not careIn conclusion I will say that the more time Mr M [redacted] spend on a project , the more aggressive he becomes and do not dare to challenge him if he installed something differently than agreed!!! I gave Mr M [redacted] a down payment to buy the material for the last phase and also proposed he drop it back as he left with itHe agreed to do so and I was ok to close the incident and forget about the down payment but he NEVER didAt the end I will say Mr M [redacted] has no hart and is very selfish.Almost months of working back and forth on all the phases of the project and no consideration at all .During the months involvement after he requested, I even authorized him to come and fish with his son from the back yard dock I will NEVER do business with Mr M [redacted] ,his attitude is too bad
MrM [redacted] was paid $for materials on a home additionMrM [redacted] has refused to provide any proof materials have been purchased or a refund MrM [redacted] was paid $deposit in April and another $in May to purchase materials for a home addition project MrM [redacted] has refused to provide any proof of any materials purchased He has also refused to provide a refund for any monies paid
Mr M [redacted] mentioned my name in a previous response so I have to post my own reviewHe came to do some stone work for the front of the house and for a fireplace.He installed the Hearth crooked and he never fix it.It should have been done right the first time!!!He was supposed to put the hearth in pieces but did with blocksAlthough I can understand things can change according to what material is available but at least the pieces could have been leveled properly!!! also Mr M [redacted] does not like to be challenged and is very Rude.He always blame somebody else when he does something wrong .He does not remember what is requested for a project because he takes him to months from the time you give him a down payment to the time he starts it instead of to weeks we originally agreedHe will give you any excuse for any delay,It will take you or phone calls to finally start the work.He also does not take any noteHe got paid in full and never deposited the check at the bank but cashed it directly from our account( hello IRS).He never refunded the down payment he got to provide additional work that I do not want him to do On top of the job not properly done , his level of vulgarity is beyond this world.All other contractors who shared the work place with him to get the new house done complained about his mouthy ,rude behavior.I do not want him back on the job site and I already got another mason who is much more kind and politeHe already fix Mr M [redacted] Hearth mistake.I installed a camera system for safety and notified the neighbors (to their satisfaction )that Mr M [redacted] will not be involve in the project anymore.I would add that the biggest complaint the building department have is all about what Mr M [redacted] did ,not finish a project properly once the contractor is paid in fullOne advice, do not pay Mr M [redacted] until you are completely satisfied or you will end up putting a review like I do .It will may be help him to take some notes and have a better memory of what you requested from him and be more courteous
