To whom it may concern,
The following is my response to your letter about a complaint lodged against me and my business (ID: [redacted]) by [redacted].
[redacted] brought parts to me to be machined: a block, a crank, pistons and rods,(referred to as a...

short block), bored and honed the block, paralleled the deck, balanced the assembly, installed the pistons on the rods, gapped the rings, installed the cam bearings and freeze plugs, final washed all parts, and assembled the short block. These are all after market, high performance racing parts which have no warranty for intended use.For this particular engine block they manufacture two types of cam bearings.
[redacted]'s block could potentially take either size can bearing, but the majority of people using this block choose the cam bearing with the larger journal because it gives them a racing advantage, and that is the reason they purchase this particular block in the first place. [redacted] and never discussed journal size. assumed he was using the larger cam because that is what most people do. [redacted] assembled his own engine, and he installed the cam. At that point, he should have realized something was wrong because the cam would have been loose in the bores of the block. Being an amateur engine builder he did not pick up on this problem and proceeded to complete the engine.
[redacted] had stated he had built engines before, and wanted to save money by doing it himself.
He called me stating something was wrong with the engine, and immediately blamed me, which at this point we had no idea what had happened. He stated that "it had to be something you (me) did, because everything (him) did was perfect". Then furthermore, he accused me of putting [redacted] cam bearings in the block which would have been impossible because they would not have fit. I did NOT install [redacted] can bearings, installed the correct bearings made specifically made for that block, Part # [redacted],
I generously offered to disassemble the shortblock, at no charge, with him present so we could find out together what had caused the problem, which we did.
Damage was found to be from the wrong cam being installed. The only damage incurred was to the camshaft (a $250 part), and a few of the pistons were scratched. The scratches to the pistons would easily clean up and not affect performance.
At this point, there was no warranty because I did not build the engine, but since he had been a longtime customer and friend, offered to clean everything up and install new rings and bearings if he would supply the cam. [redacted] stated that he was out of money, that he was fed up with this project, he had spent more than he had projected and all he wanted to do was gather his parts and leave,
What more could do? The next thing knew, I received a certified letter from [redacted]'s wife, demanding all of his money back, plus $1500.00. I cannot warranty work that is done by "do it yourselfers", because they do know have the knowledge or skill to assemble performance engines.
In my 30 plus years of assembling high performance engines, I have installed hundreds of cam bearings with zero failures, and have never had a case brought against me either in court or with the Revdex.com, I have no idea why he has choosen this course of action, when it could have easily been worked out.
I have tried repeatedly to get in contact with [redacted], have left messages, but he has not return my calls.
In order for me to protect myself from the unwarranted accusations made by [redacted], I have had my attorney contact [redacted]. I am sure this is what had prompted the letter of complaint to you.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions regarding this matter.
Thank you for your time and giving me an opportunity to represent myself.
Sincerely,
Jim Bowen
