In the summer of 2014, my son had his wisdom teeth removed. My negative experience with [redacted]'s office did not stem from the care received, but from the accounting practices which left me paying FOUR times the amount I expected. The original "Treatment Plan Estimate" included a column with a write-off amount of $1,523, with a total estimated patient portion of $472. I was told that the patient portion would be adjusted based on what my insurance paid, so I was prepared for that. My surprise came when we showed up the day of surgery and the amount in the write-off column had disappeared and I was now responsible for $1,948. This was not due to an insurance adjustment, but to the fact that the write-off column was now zero. I went ahead and paid since they require full payment in advance and figured we could sort out the discrepancy later. But when I contacted [redacted] with my concerns, I was told the office had tried to contact my son prior to surgery to discuss "insurance results" and that all of this could have been avoided if he had called back. (Yet my son is neither the responsible/paying party nor the insurance policy holder and they never attempted to call me, the person who is). Since this felt like it was ignoring the real issue, I contacted [redacted] again to stress that my concern was not with the insurance paid, but with a $1,523 write-off that was part of the original treatment plan estimate that mysteriously disappeared from the bill I was given the day of surgery. Their response was that I was given an "ESTIMATE," that the patient is responsible for the entire amount, and that they "do NOT do write-offs" (then why have that column on the form in the first place?) and that no adjustment would be made since I was informed of the new patient portion "PRIOR to surgery," at which time I could have canceled or rescheduled. This hardly seems fair since I was informed of the new price 10 minutes prior to a surgery appointment we had waited two months for and both taken time off work to accommodate. I took the original estimate in good faith and certainly did not anticipate a $1,523 write-off to be a mistake or for it not to be honored. For these reasons, I would advise doing business with [redacted] at your own risk and definitely recommend double-checking each and every figure since the "unfortunate oversight" of their office could lead you to pay four times the amount you might be expecting.
