Initial Business Response /* (1000, 8, 2015/08/19) */
When [redacted] brought his boat to my business, I was hesitant to work on the boat due to the age. I had discussed with him the only way I would work on the boat is that he understands that there are no returns or warranty. And that the parts and...

labor could exceed the value of the boat. [redacted] was ok with that and said he understood.
A used control box was installed at a cost of $100.00 plus $150.00 labor. [redacted] bought a depth finder, brought it to me and I installed it at a cost of $150.00 for Labor.
The motor was started several times. It started and ran each time. I called [redacted] and told him it was done. [redacted] came to pick up the boat we both went to start it one last time and it didn't start. Upon checking it, there was no spark. We priced out a stater through my parts book at #284.00 He looked one up on Ebay and found it for around $180.00 with the ability to return in 4 days. I told him he could order it himself to save some money. After a couple of weeks [redacted] called and told me to order the stater. As he couldn't get one coming. I had found a used on and tried it with no success. At this time we also found that the rectifier had bare wires showing. To replace the rectifier as well would be an additional #33.78. At this point I had told [redacted] and made it very clear that the parts must be paid for before I ordered as they are not returnable from my supplier. [redacted] came out and put #350.00 down to get the parts coming. The parts were installed and the motor started several times. On Friday [redacted] came out to pick it up and the motor wouldn't start. I was out of town at that time and [redacted] spoke with [redacted]. [redacted] told [redacted] to call me on Monday. When [redacted] calls me on Monday I had dropped the phone and it was disconnected. I never hung up on him. He did call back and I tried to explain to him that the parts are non-returnable. If he had ordered them from Ebay he would have been able to return them as that Ebay customer had a 4 day return policy. I cannot return parts as the supplier considers them a special order because of the age of the motor and the lack the replacements being made.
At this point we have invested a lot of hours into this boat and the labor bill would far exceed the value of the boat. I suggest he come get the boat as we would have to be done working on it. When [redacted] came to get the boat it was in my shop. I did ask him if he wanted the used control box that we had installed. Because it was not paid for. If he did not want the control box I would remove it. He insisted that he already paid for it. I explained to him that the $350.00 he had put down was for the parts he had me order, not for the work and parts that had already been done. When I took the boat out of the shop I did not realize the motor was down. As soon as I realized it I stopped. As far as the lights and steering, I'm not sure what is going on there. I did offer to take a look at them, assuming the trailer lights may have gotten caught during transporting the boat around. They were never ever tampered with by myself or [redacted]. The boats do sit outside in the business parking lot area. Which is not a fenced in area. The missing CDI box cover was still on the work bench. But during the heated discussion it was simply forgotten to be put back on. Same with the fly wheel, it was loose because we were still working on putting it back together at the time he came to pick it up. Work in progress.
I never asked [redacted] for any more money because he felt he didn't owe anything and I was cutting my losses.
There was no sabotage as [redacted] claims. [redacted] has all the new parts and the used control box. Just in parts alone is over #417.78. $444.94 to be exact with tax. I donated all the labor for [redacted]. I was more than fair.
This all boils down to an old boat and motor. Boats like these can easily become a money pit. I do not like to work on boats and motors of this age due to this reason and the inability to get remanufactured parts for them. I was very upfront and honest with [redacted] from the beginning. The non-returnable parts and my hesitation to work on motors and boats of that age for this very reason.
We spoke to [redacted] from the Humane Society today and [redacted] confirmed that [redacted] has also accused them of sabotaging & misleading him about the boat being in working order. After [redacted] clearly informed him the boat was as is. [redacted] stated that he has threaten to ruin their reputation of selling boats even though they are in the Dog and cat business. ([redacted]'s words). That he was short, snappy and rude to her. [redacted] has given us permission to give her contact info to the Revdex.com if the Revdex.com feels the need to contact her. She would be happy to talk to the Revdex.com about [redacted].
[redacted], Central Humane Society, [redacted].
I feel [redacted] damaged the boat himself and is trying to get either myself or the Humane Society to pay him for it or have it fixed on our dime. As we gave already donated $600.00 in labor alone.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 10, 2015/08/21) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The boat is getting worked on at the [redacted] in madden ND. There is issues with the boat to discuss as soon as I have the full report I will send it to you.
Final Business Response /* (4000, 13, 2015/09/01) */
On August 27th, 2015 [redacted] owner & mechanic of the [redacted] in Mandan, ND and he is personally working on [redacted]'s boat. He informed us that he installed a used CDI box. Even though we had all ready installed one ourselves. Motor started and ran fine. He stated to me that he told [redacted] to take and try it to make sure that fixed the problem. [redacted] then informed us that Two days later [redacted] returned with the same issue he had been having with all along. [redacted] stated he informed [redacted] the motor was not worth sticking money into and he should look at getting a different motor. Which was exactly what we suggested when [redacted] had his boat at our business. [redacted] stated to us that he informed [redacted] he would not work on the motor anymore because of the age of the motor. [redacted] has given us permission to have you contact him at 701-663-3100 to verify and answer any questions you may have. At this point we are not sure what [redacted] is looking for. As stated earlier the parts that we installed cost more than what [redacted] paid us without labor charges.
After reviewing the letter from [redacted] to the Humane society our professional opinion is that a lot of money has been stuck into this motor without any resolution to the problem. Two owners, [redacted], [redacted] and myself have either paid money or donated parts and time to this motor. And it still has the same problem. From what we can see this motor has had several people try to fix it to no unveil. I still feel we went above and beyond to help [redacted]. I don't know what more we can do as the motor is quite old and when dealing with motors of this age they can become a money pit. Constantly chasing one problem after another ending up sticking more money into it then if you were to buy a newer motor. And if you do get it running properly now you have an expensive old motor. [redacted] was told this by myself and [redacted] from [redacted]. I feel he is looking to get something for nothing and ruin a business in he process.
