Review: I had a pipe in my bathroom burst and it leaked into my kitchen causing me some damage. I contacted a public adjuster to help with the insurance claim. I was advised to find a local contractor to give me an estimate of the damages that will mirror what the insurance company said the damages would be. I found JEH Remodeling Company on the [redacted] website and was intrigued by the reviews they received so I decided to hire them to renovate my kitchen. This was my first remodeling project so I was a little ignorant to the ins and outs of the home improvement process. I had no idea cabinets are to be ordered ahead of time, no demo should be done until you have a complete layout of what you want to do and you should know what the labor should be before signing the contract. I admit I did my due diligence a little too late. The contractors [redacted] and [redacted] really fast talked me into believing I would get the kitchen of my dreams. They wrote the contract up for me to present to the insurance company in the amount of $18,500 which would allow me to get the remaining balance of $5158 from my insurance company less the public adjusters share. So, the total I received from the insurance company was a little over $11K and not $18,500.After advising [redacted] of the difference he advised me that he would do the kitchen for whatever I got from the insurance company because he said it wouldnt take that much anyway. He said I would just have to eliminate getting my bathroom floor fixed and it would change the type of cabinetry I would get. I was fine with that. I even told him I would use my same appliance to help in the difference of the funds. He told me not to worry about that and let them handle the funds part. He repeatedly told me he wasnt making any money from this and he just wanted to give me a beautiful kitchen(sales tactic). I was promised by them 3 different kitchen design layouts which really got me excited about the renovation. They came to my house and advised that they would need a $3000 deposit to start the job. I gave a check for the $3000 thinking this was going to get me the design plans I was looking for because I thought this was part of the process. I asked to sit down with them so we can get this started. They came again to the house telling me the design plan but had no pictures of what it would look like just showing me what can be done. I was more engaged at this time not thinking that I dont even have a complete layout of how the kitchen would look. I just knew I wanted to have a wall down and thats what they were promising. Before, I knew it I gave them my key and they said they would get a renters box to put the key in. Well, that didnt happen. Meantime, they put a dumpster in my backyard and began demolition. They gutted the whole kitchen out and told me they needed another $2000 to complete the electrical work because I have knob-n-tube wiring. I gave them a check but the check bounced so I gave them, cash instead and still havent received my receipt. Now, at this point I have been waiting to receive the rest of the money from the insurance company of $5158.00. So, they said when I get the money they would start working on my house again. On December 19th I advised them that I received the money from the public adjuster. On December 20th, I left the check for $5158 at the front door of my house for them to pick up. They came and picked up the check. This is when it went really downhill for me. I called them several times asking when they were going to start working. They kept promising me they were coming. At one point, they didnt return my emails or calls so I called [redacted] asking them to contact them to have them to call me. That same night they did call me and told me they would meet me that Friday January 10. I called them Thursday night to find out the time we could meet and they said they were working on another job and will call me back. I received a text from [redacted] asking me if I was going to have the balance of $7500 to complete the work. This made me furious because they havent done anything to my house for the $5158 that I gave them. I asked him, Why is he discussing more money when no work was done for the $5158.00. He told me, a lot has been done, but I dont know what because my house still looks the same. On Saturday, I received a text from [redacted] stating he wanted to come by and bring some drywall and strapping. I still did not see them. So, Monday, January 13, I wrote them an email stating I was cancelling services with them and would like my money of $5158.00 returned to me, my key back and the dumpster removed from my yard. When I came home from work that Monday I saw that their ladder and tool box was gone. I emailed them to find out if they were in my house. Two days later they advised me that they took their things and left my key under the flower pot. Meantime, I had contacted a lawyer friend who sent them a letter advising them to return my money. Today, January 24th I contacted them letting them know since I havent received my money I would be contacting the Consumer Affairs. Their response was, please do so, suggesting they would not be returning my money. I dont know who is responsible for the dumpster but it is still sitting on my property. I am now left with a gutted kitchen and dust all over where they promised to clean up. I can do the cleanup but I need my money back.Desired Settlement: $7158.00
