Discriminatory in who they approve for leasing, but theres no accountability for landlords in this country so they'll never face consequences. They don't fix anything in a timely manner, the Laundry machines rarely work, there's roaches that infest the basement in the summer, The people in the leasing office are unflexible and unhelpful. Renting and dealing with slumlords is always a nightmare but these people are among the worst of them

Review: Our experience with JEK was increasingly negative from the beginning of our lease onward, and largely prompted our move.Firstly, when I first went to view the offered apartment their agent showed me an entirely refinished unit, with new carpets, on the first floor, with a private entrance. Subsequently when I went to sign the lease, they informed that it would not be that unit, but one in an entirely different building. I asked if I could see it, and they, after a bit of insistence, acquiesced and allowed me to view the unit that they had apparently taken my deposit toward (without first informing me of the switch).When my mother and I entered the unit it was clearly in the midst of being refinished and had noticeably old carpets. We asked if the carpets would be replaced before our lease began, and the agent was insistent that they indeed would be. Now being short on time, and having already submitted a deposit we decided that it would be fine and proceeded to sign the lease. Upon moving in, we found that the carpets had not, as promised, been replaced, and furthermore there were no closet doors. We immediately called them, as well as sent them a letter. They sent someone to address the closets and said they would note the lack of door to the bathroom cabinet, but ignored our complaint about the carpets.A year passed, with a number of maintenance issues, including a lack of a proper security doors, and still the carpet was never addressed, and as the rent was being increased we opted not to renew our lease. In preparation of our move out my brothers, my husband, and I moved all appliances in the kitchen and scrubbed its entirety, scoured the bathrooms and sinks, and twice over shampooed the carpets. We called and asked for a move out inspection, but again received no response. So, we took pictures, left the keys, and simply left.Two months passed, and I began to wonder why I hadnt received the return of my security deposit so I called and asked, the lady in their office said she would look into it. Another two weeks passed, and we received a letter claiming that we owed them for carpets that were, documentably, damaged and old when we moved in. We called to dispute it and they responded by firstly threatening our rental history and then offering to accept payments. This was obviously not an option as we did not cause the damage.After consulting with a lawyer and Madison tenant recourses, we were advised not to pay them, but to instead reiterate the facts to anyone who might inquire. We have not only done so, but have repeatedly asked that they sue us, so that we can present our evidence and witnesses, and thus be vindicated and even countersue for slander. Unfortunately, they have responded once again with silence.Having since spoken to others in the area I have found this story repeated over and over: They moved in to a JEK property, cared for it in good faith, only to later have their deposit stolen and their reputation tarnished. We were new to Madison when we rented from them and it was an incredibly negative first impression of a largely lovely city. I only hope that others might better inquire after and research into this property company in order to avoid unjust treatment.Desired Settlement: I would like their claim that I owe them money to rescinded and I would like a written apology. It has negatively impacted my credit despite the fact that the claims were false.

This email is in response to the complaint filed by [redacted].

Attached is a copy of the invoice for the carpet installation prior to their move in at [redacted]. I have also attached a video of their move out inspection along with pictures of the underside of the carpet we had to take out after they lived there.

1. In Mrs. [redacted]'s complaint she states that the carpets had not as promised been replaced: They were installed new 6/11/11 the invoice is attached.

2. The [redacted]s did not return a move-in form which was confirmed and noted in the file on November 10, 2011

3. We mailed the security deposit to the forwarding address provided of [redacted]-it was unclaimed. [redacted] called the office on September 18, 2012 when he spoke to [redacted] about not receiving his deposit. We mailed another copy along with a letter requesting a payment plan.

4. We also mailed a reminder statement October 8, 2012, a collection letter on October 16th requesting payment plan be established by November first. We had no contact with them. The account was then sent to collections on December 12, 2012.

We received no correspondence from them after September 18, 2012.

If you look at the video you can see the condition the carpet and apartment was when they moved out. If you would like any additional information on the other items presented we can certainly address them however since I believe this was filed due to the collection account against them, the pictures and video should clarify any questions.
