JFK Medical Center Reviews (3)

This is a medical bill complaint against the JFK Medical Center On April 2015, I had a car accident and visited JFK Medical Center emergency room shortly afterwardI walked myself in The staff measured my blood pressure, administered X -rays on my spine, and then told me to go home I was in the emergency room about one hour; I didn’t take any drug offered and didn’t even lie on a bed
Shortly after the visit, I received two medical bills (from billing companies that work for JFK) which I’ve both paid promptly out-of-pocket: (1) $for emergency department visit and (2) $for radiology examinations
A few months later, I learned that JFK would charge another three thousand dollars for the visitI went to the billing department in-person and asked for detail A manager said to me, with a big smile, “Go home Don’t worry, we’ll solve this with your insurance company.”
I recently receive the third bill for $3,My insurance company has paid $and I am bi

When I called to get a break down of the bill they told me its an e/r general visitIs that a break down? The insurance company doesn't have a break down of the bill eitherThey also just charged for E/R generalThis is not right to over charge someone for vital signsHow ethnical is thisI spoke to Marian at the customer service who spoke with me and advised hat Smeida does the billing and she is the only one that can he

My hospital stay at JFK of March 14-17, 2015 was dreadful. I would strongly warn anyone needing to go to the hospital to go somewhere else. There was absolutely nothing about the quality of the care I received that I would consider acceptable. In all honesty, my well-being was jeopardized. The general attitude of the nurses and staff was nasty and they had a "it's not my job” kind of attitude or "I already put an order in for that and you will have to wait for it" kind of attitude. Empathy, kindness, or thoughtfulness were not qualities that any of the staff possessed.
Here are the highlights of my stay:
? When I got there, I was put in my bed and no assistance was provided to make me comfortable. I was very cold and was not provided additional blankets and was not told how to adjust the temperature in the room. I was not given a call button. As it turns out, the actual call button that I should've been using was under the bed, and I did not know that I should be using that. Apparently, it fell there before I got there, and no one bothered to give it to me when I arrived. The entire first night I tried using the call button on the bed and no one responded.
? I was not given any water the first night. I was very thirsty and dehydrated. As a patient that was experiencing atrial fibrillation, I feel that I should've been provided a lot of water. Actually all patients should be provided water.
? The day before I was admitted I had dislocated my shoulder. I was still having considerable amount of pain on my shoulder. When I requested a bag of ice so that I could ice my swollen shoulder, I was denied the ice. I was told that a doctor’s order was needed to give me ice. The nurses did not care that I was in pain and that my shoulder was still very swollen. I asked and actually begged and was denied Ice. There was no Doctor in sight to ask for orders. It was brutal being there. No help was provided to help me get comfortable as I was injured.
? I was not provided life sustaining medication. One of the medications that I must take every morning is prednisone. I am adrenal insufficient. I told the nurses this when I first got there. I explained how critical it is for me to get this medication in the morning as I could pass out and actually die. My first morning I requested the prednisone since they did not bring it. I was told that there was a doctor’s order in, and I would have to wait until it was approved. I was also told there's nothing else they could do except wait. To make a long story short, I requested it a couple more times and it was 2 o'clock and I still had not received my medication. I began to feel sick, lightheaded, and nauseous like I was just going to pass out. So I took my prednisone from my own meds. I didn't really want to die or have a seizure. They left me no choice. When the nurse came by a little later, I told her that she didn't need to bring me my prednisone because I took it already. Not only did she scold me very harshly, she bought in another nurse and they both laced into me like I was some kind of criminal. I don't understand how they could've gotten away with that.
? My sheets were not changed during my entire four-day stay. And I must repeat that I was not provided any towels or toiletries.
? I feel the nurses and the staff in general had a very poor attitude towards the patients. It was a feeling that they could not be bothered and they hate what they do.
? No toiletries or towel was provided for me. The day I left I realized these items were tucked in the corner behind the curtain on the window sill. The entire time I was there, if I used the bathroom I used toilet paper to dry my hands when I washed them.
? The phone they provided was on the window sill far away from my reach.
? Honestly, I feel the rooms are set up very poorly. Why provide a nightstand if the patient cannot reach it. A few minor changes would have made things a lot better.
? The elderly lady that I shared a room with had a problem getting out of bed and required bedpans. Consistently, when she requested a bedpan, she was made to wait hours. On several occasions, she wet the bed. I was horrified for her. It was like she lost her dignity staying at JFK. After she used the bedpan, she was made to wait hours for them to come and clean the bedpan out for her. The room smelled terrible, and she must have been very uncomfortable. I heard her say to herself that she wished she was dead.
? They did not allow us to close the door, and so I could not get any rest. The patients on the floor coughed a lot and made a lot of noise and even with earplugs it was impossible to sleep.
? There was a chair inside the shower so I could not use the shower.
? When they changed my roommate’s bed and took her soiled sheets after she had an accident, they would leave the soiled sheets on the bathroom floor. A couple of times, I used the bathroom and stepped on those soiled sheets and had her urine on my socks. It was gross, not to mention very unsanitary. Then I would get into my own bed with those dirty socks and my sheets were never changed.
? I feel that my roommate, an old lady of 90 years, should have been respected during her stay. Obviously, everyone should be respected but she was elderly and somebody's grandma and should have been taken care of better. I honestly felt like crying for her. It was so sad that they were nasty to her and did not care about her well-being. During my entire stay, she was not of helped out of bed to walk or sit up. She kept asking but nobody would help her. She needed to walk and she needed to start to have physical therapy. Her daughter was continuously calling and asking for someone to start her physical therapy but no one responded. On my last day there when I had the strength, I made a big deal out of it, and she was able to get the physical therapy that same day and then she was able to leave and go to another facility.
I would like to take the opportunity to offer some insight on how my stay should have been. When I got there, somebody should have helped me get comfortable, provided pillows for my shoulder which was in a lot of pain and in a sling and also provided ice so that it could start to reduce the inflammation. My call button should've been given to me, and the temperature in the room should have been adjusted after being asked if it was okay. The nurses should lose the bad attitude and have some empathy. The room should've been cleaned regularly, the sheets should've been changed regularly and soiled sheets that had urine from my roommate should not have been left on the floor. Prednisone should have been provided on time without any exception. My nightstand should've been placed closer to my bed so that I could reach it and my phone. Additionally, I should have been provided some water and toiletries. Since there are regulations against placing items on the window sills, and since they were hidden behind curtains, patients should be told these items are there for their comfort and the items should be reachable.
