I called John betlem to evaluate a problem I was having with my furnace. When the technition came to the house my furnace was not working . After he worked in the basement for 1/2 hour he called me down and showed me that my furnace ran for one minute but then shut it’s self down . He told me that I needed a fan limit switch . I paid him a hundred and twenty eight dollars for his visit and he told me that the shop would call me for the cost of the fan switch and labor costs . After sitting on the couch and thinking about how he got my furnace to run, but only for a minute , I went down to take another look . After examining the wiring , I noticed that he had put the wires for the gas valve on wrong . After I put the wires back the way they are supposed to go the furnace fired right up and ran perfect . I found out later after I had already ordered the limit switch that he said I needed for one hundred dollars that the real problem was a twenty dollar pressure valve that was sticking . I asked John betlem for a refund on my service call because not only did he not fix my furnace but created a whole new problem . They refused to give me a refund . He said he had to talk to the technition and call me right back . I never heard from him . I would suggest not trusting this company

In talking with our service manager, Fran, he does remember this call and remembers talking with our service technician; unfortunately, he cannot recall if he called back Mr *** or not. The amount that was charged to the customer was a trip and diagnostic charge only. This will tell the customer the first point of failure for the furnace once we fix that we can see if anything else is wrong. As he expressed in his letter Mr. is a do it yourself fixer and our service technician did notice different wiring and such in the unit that looked to be like Mr. might have been trying to fix it as well. As a good faith gesture we can refund the $128. If he was still having trouble and had called us back he would not been charged that amount again and we could further research, which was explained to him in one of the conversations he had with our service manager. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for this. I will refund the diagnostic charge back to his *** card that he paid it on.

Th AC unit runs continuously until it reached set temp, for example the setting temp is 69 deg. and the inside temp is 76 the ac unit would run for 2 days and drop only 4 deg where I would shut off unit due to excessive electricity use. I complained this unit is under sized for my home, the sq. footage is 1656 so you would need an ac unit that covers the 1656 sq. ft. According to online info, you need 1 ton for each 600 sq. ft, my ac is 2.5 ton which covers 1500 sq. ft. which is undersized. The unit should be 3 ton ac unit. Jim Betlem insists the ac unit is sufficient and that the remedy is to move the return registers to the edge of the ceiling, thats ridiculous since the law of science is warm travels to cold thats why cooling register is at the floor. I sent a fact sheet from Rosie indicating that a unit that runs continously is caused by an undersized ac unit, but Jim insists otherwise.

This is a response to the complaint filed from *** – Complaint # ***

We installed a new furnace and air conditioner in April of 2012. We have not been there to maintain his equipment since installation. We were first notified that he was not getting enough cooling in October of 2017. If you recall in 2016 we had 20+ days in the 90’s, but still not an issue. We advised Mr. that we would come out when the weather was warm enough to do some trouble shooting to help determine what the issue might be. We sent David Betlem (Technical Advisor) and a service tech to his residence on June 19th of 2018 to look in to his complaints of not enough cooling. Our findings were a 10+ degree difference from the floor to the ceiling, which means there is severe stratification going on. We would need to raise the cold air returns to remove the hot air from the ceiling to let the cold air move off the floor. We also found a lot of furnishings blocking the registers, which is also reducing air flow. His problems are in the distribution system, not the sizing of the equipment. If we thought that was the issue, it would have been replaced with the larger size already, because we stand behind everything that we do with a 100% satisfaction guarantee! He believes his unit is undersized for the square footage of his home. I would like to perform an Energy Audit, “Free of Charge” to confirm the proper sizing of air conditioning needed for his home. We are a certified NYSERDA contractor, which gives us the knowledge and tools required to perform a heat loss/gain on his home, which will help determine the proper size of air conditioning needed.

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

[I refuse the statement and resolvement of my complaint based on there act of what to do on my complaint. I also want to make it know when the weather was 90 degrees I didn't use the a/c because I had gone away. I started to use the unit within a couple of years and that how I noticed the problem.

On Wednesday 11/22/2017, I had a new heater/cooling system installed by Betlem Heating and Cooling, Inc. Jason ***, a sales representative for the company, had met with me the Monday before and had assisted me in choosing a new heater. I felt fortunate to get one installed so quickly after our meeting. He was to be my main contact person from that point on with additional questions I would have regarding the heater and also circulation issues associated with it. By 1/29 /2018, I had two companies review the heating system, when I was dissatisfied with the above issues (and air leakage). They pointed out that 1) the system was not level due to the new plenum, and that this situation might cause the cooling system to leak - I haven't seen this issue yet. Jason noted that if the coil supposedly (is) being out of level, John Betlem will fix that if it leaks water due to being out of level..." (email 2/6/2018). I hope this does not become an issue down the road.
2) The 2nd issue could be related to the first as it concerns the plenum again – and this is the issue I need addressing at this point. On 12/23/2018, I wrote to Jason that “when the heater is running I can feel heat escaping from both sides of the tape that is gaping. The two companies (as noted above) also noted that the plenum should have been attached to the top of the system, not to the middle of it as Betlem had done. I’m not sure if this is the solution but the one that Betlem chose to do, to correct the air leakage, did not rectify the problem. On 2/20/2018 Betlem “fixed” the plenum with tape and a strong adhesive. Now it is summer and cool air is escaping both longer sides of the plenum. I noted this evening that I could also feel air escaping where the two metal sides connect (of the plenum on a shorter side). I do not foresee this as something I want to keep contacting Betlem about to repair. I am losing air and probably money I'm paying out for my air conditioning/heating as well.
