Be careful when contracting with State AlarmI inherited an installed alarm system in a house I purchased, and wasn't sure whether I wanted monitoringI spoke with a representative of State Alarm who assured me that I could terminate services at any time
When I received the standard contact, however, it provided for a year term in the fine printI assumed at the time that it was simply an error that State Alarm had not updated the contract to reflect our discussionsSo, I modified the contract prior to signing to provide that I could terminate the contract at will
After terminating the contract, State Alarm informed me that I owed the remainder of the year termEven after I explained the situation to them and directed them to they contract, they refused to back offIndeed, they acted very unethically by sending me only the 1st page of the contract (which contained their year term), but purposefully not providing the 2nd page where I had made the revisions to the contract - as their proof of their position
They spitefully submitted the matter to a collection agency, and placed a negative comment on my credit - even though they had actual knowledge that they had no basis for taking this actionThis makes me question the entire sales process, and suspect them of intentional bait and switch tactics
