Review: My wife and I hired [redacted], of John's Handyman Service, to do our roof on September 19, 2014. We signed a contract that stated the job would cost $3600, with $1800 due up front so that John could purchase the shingles and materials for the job. The contract stated that he would be finished the entire job by September 30(10 days). John told me verbally that the job would take 2 days and the only reason he put the 10 days in the contract was to account for possible rain or bad weather. Anyway, John came out to my house on Monday, September 22, to start the job. He worked for 2 hours and left. I came home and called him and he told me he had a problem with his compressor and he had to get it fixed and that he would be there the next day.I came home from work the next day and he had never showed up. I called him and he had a recording on his voicemail stating that he had a family emergency and that he couldn't work and he would call back at 7 pm. I called him 4 or 5 times and got no response. He finally called me back the next day and he told me he had a "death" in the family, and that he left a note on my door the day before informing me of this. There was no note. We got into an argument and he finally said he would be there later on that day to finish the roof. He did show up at 12:00 pm and he worked until 2:00 pm. He argued with my mother in law about her "stealing his note" before he left. I have never seen him again. I have called him numerous times. He tells me he is coming and never shows up. He told me he is waiting for the shingles, but he had already told me from the beginning that he bought the shingles when he first got the original $1800. Now he won't even return my phone calls. We have not heard from him for 6 days now. We still have not even received the shingles we paid for. We want either $1000 refunded or the shingles that we paid for.Desired Settlement: We want a $1000 or the remaining shingles and any other material that he was supposed to get with our $1800 deposit.
