Facts. I have been a CPA for 30 years. Client made appointment over the phone and was told ofthe address change. Client arrived for appointment. She said she would leave the documentsand was unsure how I wanted to proceed. l told her I usually prepare taxes while the client isthere so they don't...

have to come back twice. She verbally agreed. I got some preliminaryinformation from her. She gave me some documents to prepare the lax return and gave me herimprovements to the sold property including 50+ receipts not totaled. Since there were a. lot oflittle receipts l asked ifthey were repairs or improvements. She said they were improvements. Iasked if she bad a totall)nd were they all related to major improvements. She couldn't answerthat but said they were major to her and I got the impression they were part of some remodelingtype things. I added up the little receipts since she didn't have totals and looked at thedescription on the larger receipts. She asked some questions regarding why I didn't include acertain cost or why I did the whole cost on something when part of it was repair. l explained thatsome things like repairs or appliances are not added to basis. My procedure is to enter into excelfast and then go back and compare the figures again. She interrupted me, stating I typed a figurewrong before I had a chance to correct it. I proceeded with my own internal procedures to insureaccuracy. I gave her an engagement letter which explains mutual expectations. We discussed it,she read it, agreed to it and signed it. She filled out a questionnaire designed to detect situationsthat needed more questioning. She also was given a letter describing my fees at $400. She askedif it would be more than that. I said .I was giving her a $250 break as short sales are morecomplex and it would not be more than $400. She mentioned she could do it herself if it wasgoing to be more than $400. I told her she could take her things and leave if she wanted but the
cost would be $400. She agreed to have me continue. After all figures were input, I asked abouthealth insurance coverage. She had questions regarding it and I answered them. The law iscomplex and there are virtually hundreds of thousands of different situations that could takeplace, I knew there was an exception for short term coverage, I just wasn't sure exactly whichspot on the tax return it had to he input or if I needed a certain code. I use Google search 3different ways 1) when 2 or more sites have the exact same wording I use this as authoritativebecause the majority of articles regurgitate the same exact info word for word from the Code orfrom interpretations of the Code. 2) as a starting point that indicates a direction. l need to searchin and 3) as a source after I evaluate whether or not it is reliable and makes sense according tothe Code in my professional opinion. I used the google as #3. I went over the lax return with the
client as one of my requirements is that I know that the client understands the tax return beforesigning it as a professional goal I have in my practice. It also ensures that they agree that allincome has been reported and ensures all expenses were deducted. l scanned her documents thatI used, printed the tax return and gave her the efile form to sign so l could efile the tax return. Igave her the original documents back,  and a copy of the tax return with instructions, a copy ofthe 8879 which has my electronic signature, the questionnaire, engagement letter/privacy policyshe signed and the fcc letter she signed, She paid for the return and left.
