K C's Marine Service & Performance Reviews (1)

I left my boat at KC's to be repaired. After the repairs when I took the boat out on the water for the first time the engine overheated and brokeOn 1/5/16 I picked my boat up from KC's marine after having the water pump replaced and other repair work that was done. I returned the boat to my home where it was parked and listed for sale. On 2/27/16 a gentleman came to look at the boat and take it for a test drive. Up to this point the boat had not been ran as while at the repair shop the battery was removed from the boat and not returned. I purchased three new batteries on 2/27/16 to take the boat to Mott lake to conduct the test drive. I dropped the boat in the water and started the boat. I took off and got the boat to plane out. About 30 seconds later the boat died. I started it back up and tried to get it to plane, the boat would not plane out and died again. I was taking it back to shore when the boat started making noise and I shut it off. I used my trolling motor to get it back to shore. The engine was running for no more than two minutes total. I took the boat back to KC's marine on 2/29/16 where I was instructed to leave the boat so they could look at it. I called KC's marine on 2/7/16 where the mechanic claimed the water pump they installed had burned up cause the motor overheat. They said that the water pump ran dry. The boat was never started without water being supplied to the boat.Desired SettlementI am asking that the shop fix the damage done to the motor due to the new water pump they installed failing.Business Response 3/18/16To whom it may concern:On 1/5/16 the customer brought in his boat for servicing and claimed that the motor was not running correctly. After looking at the boat, we determined that the water pump needed replacing. We then replaced the water pump and rebuilt the carburetor and serviced the engine. We also tested it by putting in the water and ran it and determined that it was running correctly and not overheating. He picked up the boat on 1/8/16 and brought it back on 2/27/16 claiming that the boat still was not functioning correctly and overheating. Then he claimed that we stole his battery. When he first brought the boat in for servicing there was no battery in it therefore, we did not take it. I inspected the water pump and the installation of it and determined that it was not a faulty water pump and it was installed correctly. I also determined that it had obviously been run dry and that is what caused it to burn. The photos attached will show the damage. He claimed that he only ran the boat for 30 seconds however he told us he ran it for at least 30 minutes. It was clearly run for more than 30 seconds dry without water which is what caused the damage. I also suggested he take it to another mechanic and they would also determine in the end that it was run dry.(I have photos if needed.) Thank you.[redacted]KC's Marine ServiceConsumer Response The dates of service provided by this company are not accurate. I have tried to contact another boat repair shop however at this time I do not have the money to have them look at the boat to verify that this is the fault of KC marine. I do however have a witness who was on the boat the day it was taking for a test ride and the malfunction happened. At no point did I state the boat was ran for " at least 30 minutes" , this was not even possible as the boat motor blew after the first 2 attempts to run it ( each attempt lasting no longer then 30 seconds each again I have a witness to mattes to this.I originally dropped my boat off on December 29, 2015 to have the pee spout fixed. I received a phone call on the 6th of January that the water pump needed to be replaced and that my battery was dead and needed to be replaced. On 13 January I received a text message that boat was ready for pick up. I picked up my boat on 15 January. I took my boat home and parked it to list it for sale, at thus point I realized my battery had not been returned. On 28 February I took my boat out for a test drive with a potential buyer and this is when the boat would not stay running and the motor began to smoke and make a loud noise. Since this was a weekend and I had a change of command to prepare for that week I was an able to contact KC marine until 2 March. I had to replace the battery that was missing from the original trip to the ship then I took my boat back to them so they could try and see what happened. On 7 March the shop called me and stated the motor blew up because the water plump did not run properly. At this point they insisted that the problem was not theirs even though they are the ones who replaced the water pump and the water pump did not work properly causing the damage to the motor. At this point I asked if they would return my original battery to which he responded " yes, I still have it here you can have it back". I also expressed my frustration with the situation then informed him I would be there the next day to get my boat. On 8 March I went to pick up my boat, again discussed what the problem was. I was again told the water pump was to blame for the motor damage but the shop refused to take responsibility. The owner did offer to replace the water pump but said they would not repair the damage to the motor. At this time another mechanic came over and stated the boat never had a battery to begin with. I know my boat had a battery when I dropped it off, I also know I was told my battery was dead and needed to be replaced and I was later told I could have my battery back when I picked up the boat. So it makes no sense for them to now claim there was never a battery. When I loaded up my boat to bring it home the owner and the mechanic refused to put the boat back together the way it was dropped off to them. I was forced to tow my boat the 45 minute drive back home with the tail shaft removed and the rest of the motor exposed. There are several inconsistencies in the story KC marine is telling. Service dates are incorrect, details about the missing battery do not add up to what actually happened, the details they stated about the amount of time I ran the motor are simply untrue. They stated there is only one way the damage could have happened when in fact that is also untrue. They refuse to take blame for the motor damage that according to them is because of the water pump but did offer to replace the water pump. First of all that makes no sense, if thier water pump caused the damage how are they not responsible for the other damaged caused? The owner attempted to place the blame on me by saying I ran the motor dry however that is not possible as the boat was run in the lake and once more there is a witness to prove this. If the water pump installed by KC Marine was not properly working and therefore caused my motor to over heat and blow the entire motor then I feel it is absolutely the responsibility of the shop to fix all damages. I have all phone records and text messages to provide as proof for service dates that I provided. I am working with an attorney in Moore county where KC Marine is located to file a small claims suit as well as make sure they will be responsible for attorney fees, court cost and the fees I will have to pay for another shop to look at my boat motor. I think it is very poor business ethics to treat customers the way I have been treated by KC Marine.
