Review: On January 29th, 2016 I went in for an ultrasound appointment, only to find out that my baby had what is called an Echogenic Focus in his heart. The information that I was given about this issue was slim, only that it is a sign of down syndrome. My ultrasound was read by [redacted] MD and she had found what she thought was an Echogenic Focus. I was then referred to a specialist, Dr. [redacted]. After waiting to schedule and see the specialist for about a week and a half, I was left to think that there was something wrong with my baby, causing a lot of stress and disbelief. Although in my opinion I was not properly educated about an Echogenic Focus when leaving the office I looked up information myself. Once I went to the specialist I was then told that I in NO WAY fit the health status or demographics of a mom that would be carrying a baby with this kind of issue. The specialist found nothing on their ultrasound that could back up the concern for an Echogenic focus. The specialist then looked at the same ultrasound photos that [redacted] MD looked at and the specialist knew immediately that what she had seen was a normal functioning part of the heart, still unsure why I was referred in the first place, the specialist reassured me how unlikely it would be. [redacted] MD made a mistake, I now owe $150.84 for her mistake and my insurance has paid for $603.36 for this mistake. I would never have went to a specialist had I not been referred off of false information.

I don't feel that I should have to pay financially for her mistake, considering the emotional stress it caused me waiting to see a specialist that I needed to see for something that was never there in the first place.

As of now, I have called and spoke to the supervisor [redacted], she told me that there was nothing that she could do after explaining my concern. I was told to make a complaint with risk management of Kadlec Hospital. According to [redacted] my complaint was not valid and she would only facilitate what her doctor said.

I left that appointment thinking many different things, not sure if I would be able to do what I had to do and scared for my baby. Thinking that it was possible that at my age and health that my baby could have down syndrome. I am not a person that supports abortion but what if I had been? Waiting almost two weeks thinking my baby had down syndrome, stressed out and emotionally distressed that this could even be possible not knowing much of anything about what they had supposedly found.Desired Settlement: My desired outcome of this situation is that they will better educate women about things like this and that if there is something like this that the ultrasound is reviewed by another MD before sending a mother and her baby to see a specialist, especially when having to wait almost two weeks to see the specialist.

I also do not believe that I have a financial responsibility to pay for the mistake of [redacted] MD, considering that she noticed a normal functioning part of the heart as something that is a sign of down syndrome. As an MD and having the ability to read ultrasounds she should properly know the anatomy of the heart and be able to recognize a normal part from an Echogenic Focus.
