[redacted] came to my store, Katies Jewels, announcing that she was there to pick up a ring that she had left with us for repairs. In response to her request, I immediately searched in the few places in which the ring would have been stored. There was no ring! Since I had remembered seeing a job...

envelope from several weeks earlier identifying Ms. [redacted], I apologized, explained that her ring must have been misplaced, and upon closing the store would continue to look for it. After an assiduous search, which encompassed successive nights of checking and rechecking all nooks and crannies that might possibly be harboring the envelope with the ring, I reviewed my old job envelopes and discovered that the job for which I had been searching had already been retrieved by Ms. [redacted].The ring of which Ms. [redacted] spoke was apparently a second job of which I had been unaware! As jewelry repair is detailed and intimate, I grow familiar with all the pieces that reach my work bench. I do not remember ever seeing the ring in question. Consequently, I asked Ms. [redacted] for her copy of the job envelope receipt which is given to every customer when they drop off their jewelry. The receipt would facilitate the store’s effort to identify the item in question. Ms. [redacted] declared that she had left the receipt in her car, and the automobile had since been cleaned out. Therefore, the receipt no longer existed. I then requested a photo of the ring, which she obliged by sending to me.As Ms. [redacted], acknowledged that she did not personally render the ring to me but to one of my two employees (each of whom claims no recollection of Ms. [redacted] depositing her ring with them), I recognize that it remains possible that Ms. [redacted] did indeed deposit the ring with the store, and as I cherish my probity and the store’s reputation, I believe that it is incumbent on the store to do its best to accommodate Ms. [redacted]. In this vein, I offered to compensate Ms. [redacted] with one of two possible options which both employ the visual of the photograph provided by her:1) I am willing to reimburse her for the ring’s appraised value2) I can replicate the ring.Ms. [redacted] refused both offers and remains dissatisfied. I cannot imagine another offer that I can make to her, but I earnestly (and maybe chronically) continue to search for the missing ring. In kind, I have requested Ms. [redacted] do the same, on the off-chance that she never actually left the ring with Katies Jewels. An afternote: I checked with the [redacted] Police, they have no record of any complaints against me or Katie’s Jewels, and nothing from [redacted].
