I contracted Kaufman roofing to repair damage to eves and gutters that were impacted by the ice dam events during the 2018/2019 winter. I contracted with them in June 2019 and work is still not completed, however they have sent me a final invoice.
The work they performed was generally shoddy the first time around, IE installing new cove molding with a staple gun then painting before they filled the staple holes. Work on eves where they knocked the gutters out of alignment and promised to adjust, then went back on their commitment to rectify and are now asking me to pay for time and materials on top of what I already have paid to have them correct their mistake.
Gutter on south side still leaks and they like the situation above promised to fix based on what was already billed have now gone back on their promise and are asking for time and materials in addition to what I've already been billed.
Quality of craftsmanship on eve and dovetailed joints is poor and was not completed in the first place. They are asking again for more T&M to attempt to correct what was not done right the first time.
It has taken them over a year to complete the project and they billed me for multiple trips to repair shoddy workmanship the first go around and are now trying to walk away without completing the work. They are in fact threatening me by asking me to take my business elsewhere in a communication on 6/25/2020.
We timestamp all correspondence with our customers and take detailed pictures of our work. We will meet with any arbitrator, with documentation of our correspondence and pictures of the work to demonstrate the excellent quality of work done. We will address each issue: HO claims the work we performed was shoddy. We have before and after pictures not only demonstrating the work is exceptional. HO claims we knocked a gutter out of alignment. The work we did on the eaves did not knock the gutter out of alignment. Regarding the leaking gutter, we have done everything we can to stop the leak in his liners. We never warranty repair work and let him know it is not worth trying to continue to repair it, because it would be throwing good money after bad; we recommend replacing the gutter liners. HO wants us to continue to attempt to repair the leak, free of charge, even though in our professional opinion it is beyond repair. HO claims the quality of the craftsmanship on the eve is poor; once again we have pictures to verify this is not true. The contract was on a time and material basis and when we asked for payment for services rendered, HO said he was taking it under consideration. HO continues to ask us to do more work than was on the original contract yet will not pay for the work we already did. As for the length of time it has taken to do this job, it is based on several factors, one being he changed his mind to have an upgraded crown molding that was special order and another being the original contract was for the front of the house, but HO has continuously added on, resulting in us doing the entire perimeter of the house. We have completed all the work and expect payment in full. There is no more work for us to do on the home, we have fulfilled our end of the contract. Since HO is unwilling to pay for the work we performed on the home, thinks our work is shoddy, and is not happy with our advice to replace gutter liners, we suggest HO find another contractor.
I am rejecting this response because: I repeatedly responded to them in writing that the copper gutters were leaking and the eves were not fully mended. This resulted in a meeting with Chris and Bob in person to review outstanding issues on 12/16 and they committed to resolving the outstanding issues including the leaking gutters, mis-aligned downspout and outstanding repairs on the eves. At that time it was communicated that the work was within the existing scope and no additional charges would be incurred to correct the work.
Tom *** showed up on time for our initial estimate and was always available for followup calls and additional questions. As we were also dealing with other renovation/repair projects ourselves with other companies Tom provided helpful guidance on which order to get them scheduled. Keng in scheduling was also very helpful and prompt with followup to any questions I had. He was easy to contact and able to schedule around other events (like the city street sweeping). The crew showed up not only on time but early. Chad the project manager was available for questions. Jose the team leader patiently answered any questions I had and explained everything very well. Everyone was polite, worked diligently and practiced safe distancing. The crew even carefully un-did the silly makeshift chickenwire rabbit fence I had put up between the front & back yard which I had forgotten to dismantle prior to their arrival and they were so conscientious they put it back together before they left--so sweet! The crew was neat, tidy and cleaned up so well our next door neighbors had nothing but nice comments about them. The followup was immediate for any other issues that arose. They took pictures of their work and were honest with us, showing us some pictures of other issues that needed repair not related to the actual roof which was VERY much appreciated. The workmanship was superb, they did everything they said they would. Kaufman roofing is a company I would definitely recommend.

We had our roof replaced with a metal roof. Kaufman’s quote was lower than the others and they did a great job. Answered all our questions. The people who installed the roof were friendly, even when the neighbors stopped to ask them questions. They cleaned up really well and even came back after the snow was gone to make sure they didn’t miss any nails or trash. We had a really good experience and would recommend them.

Thanks to Kaufman Roofing, our old and disintegrating cedar shake roof has been replaced with a new GAF shingle roof. Being a retired architect, I have worked with thousands of contractors over the years. It is always helpful to find contractors like Kaufman Roofing, who show professionalism, honesty and integrity. From our first introductory meeting, we were provided with clear information. When we were trying to determine the right color shingle for our roof, Molly showed great patience in providing us with examples. (I highly recommend that people look at actual roofs, not just the sample boards.) Kaufman Roofing was also very flexible in finding a mutually workable date to do our work, as well as answering all questions that we had.
When the day came for the work, the crew was polite and respectful. They were extremely hard working and cleaned up the piles of old shingles. Our neighbors commented on how impressed they were with the efficiency and dedication to getting the job done. It was great entertainment for the neighbors, and the result looks great.
We also had a new metal chimney cap put on the house. It was a fraction of the cost of a new cement cap and looks fabulous. That crew exhibited the same level of professionalism.
We would be glad to hire or recommend Kaufman Roofing in the future.

Great people to work with! Needed garage roof replaced, came out right away, looked at what they thought I should have done, gave me a very fair offer, and had the roof replaced within a week! Everything was cleaned up right away, couldn’t find anything left behind, which was great since many cars use the alley every day. Also did my house roof 15 yrs ago still looks like New!

Bob Kaufman and his crew are the very best! We bought a home in Minneapolis and found some roof issues that were not the fault of Kaufman. Despite the fact that the roof was out of warranty, Bob replaced it at cost of materials. They have done other work for us and it has all been done timely, expertly, and at reasonable cost!
