Had Kyle out to diagnose why air conditioner wasn't blowing cold air. Thanks power surges the previous night the module, and blower motor were fried. Kyle quickly found issue got the part ordered and was very thorough in the explanation of the whole problem. Maybe a little a head of the game as we are waiting for the part and final repair today, but Kyle was still fantastic

Quoted me $119 for trip charge plus cost for whatever they found wrong. However, they knew they were going to charge me $320.00 for a diagnosis, but didn't tell me until they were here and had me on the hook for the first $119. ... btw, I did not need a diagnosis.

Details:
My air conditioner wouldn't start so I searched YouTube for the fix. I quickly learned that my capacitor needed to be replaced and that this is very routine, like changing a battery. The capacitor gives an electrical boost that starts the fan spinning, so I could just use a stick to get the fan spinning until the new capacitor could be installed.

The videos demonstrate how to do it yourself in ten minutes with a $20 capacitor from Amazon. However, I decided to call KM, my local Carrier dealer and was quoted a trip charge of $119 plus whatever else they found wrong. I told them it works well except for the capacitor, but they were unable/unwilling to give me a price. Very suspicious, but I knew the part was less than $20 so I scheduled the appointment.

When the service guy arrived (early with a phone call ahead), we walked to the unit together and it was already running. I believe he asked if it was cool in the house, then handed me an iPad to sign for a $462.25 charge before he could proceed.

He then sat in his van for 15 minutes, walked over and popped the capacitor in (2 minutes) for a total visit of 30 mins or less. I assumed this charge was a mistake between the office and technician, so I called the office.

The office confirmed that this is their standard charge because they always have to do a diagnostic. So, a $20 part, plus the $119 trip charge, plus $320 to diagnose the issue with a unit was working when I called them and was working when they arrived.

I did a quick google search for other similar complaints and the worst case I saw in the United States was a charge of $250, but most were complaining about less than $200.

We've reached out directly to address your concerns. We reviewed the entire customer file including phone calls. Everything we did and said was up to Kettle Moraine Heating’s policies and procedures. In a YouTube world, we understand anyone can watch a video and attempt repairs themselves. However, at Kettle Moraine Heating, we always need to do our own diagnosis, and a capacitor (while it may be compared to a battery) is not a 9 volt you can tingle your tongue with, they can carry voltages from 370v to 440v and we urge customers unfamiliar with high voltage to leave it to professionals. We also do not quote repair prices over the phone for quite a few reasons. The teachable lesson we learned from this instance was that our clarity between a diagnostic price and repair price could have been worded better and the correction has already been made. It was great talking to you and thank you for the opportunity to make us a better company.

Needed our annual inspection/cleaning before the air conditioning season really gets under way. Bill arrived with in 15 minutes of the scheduled time, and called when he was about 15 minutes away to give us a heads up on his arrival. We also got a text messaage with his picture, and contact information, so we knew who to expect.
Service went fine and air conditioner is ready for the season, and everything else checked out fine. Bill offered to follow all "current" social distancing, including gloves, mask, too as well.
I don't know how the visit could have gone better.

Matt did a great job on my maintenance appointment. Very professional and took the time to explain things and answer my questions. He also wore booties in my house as I have brand new carpeting! I originally contacted this company because my Father used them and was very happy with them. They installed a new air conditioner and furnace a year and a half ago and the salesman and install team were very professional and did a great job then as well!
