Not impressed
Hi, I recently rented a car from Kimo’s car rental Maui. Picked it up at the airport as arranged. The car ran OK but had many issues. First of all it was supposed to be in newer sedan.. It was a 2012! it was all beat up. Sunroof was taped with duct tape. I’m assuming because it leaked. Passenger side airbag light indicated that it was not working. Horn did not work.
One of the rear lights was not working. Driver side mirror control broken! And the trunk only worked for one day that was the first day. The second day he could not open it with the key or the inside latch by the driver seat. Good thing we had picked up our groceries and not had them locked into the trunk. I called and asked for a replacement. They indicated they had two but were in poor condition, and then the one that I had. I told him I would come in in the morning and take a look. Before I got there, they informed me they had a sedan that I would probably like. When I got there, it was ready. I mentioned to the person there that the car I was dropping off had many issues, including , the passenger side airbag indicator light. He indicated that he was not a mechanic but that lights aren’t always accurate. The one that I picked up was a 2006 sedan. I checked and it had had a Recents to safety in January so I felt a little bit more comfortable taking it. Everything worked reasonably well for the remainder of the trip. I had to fill up the spare tire with air because it was basically flat. I’m guessing it was never checked. It was one of those space saver tires, and it was never used. They would’ve been much good to me , when I went on the longer trip on the Hana highway. Also, an engine light indicator came on. I informed them by text, but never received back an answer. I rented a vehicle used for company previous to this one in Maui. And it was a nice vehicle and it worked well. After this experience, I would not go back here again or not recommend it to anyone else. I am not a person to complain. But the first vehicle should never have been put on the road. It would never pass a safety in Canada.

My rental fees for two weeks equalled the vehicle's net worth
Looking at the extortionate price of car rentals on Maui at Christmas, I thought trying KImo's would be a viable alternative. This is not to suggest their rental fees were cheap, I paid $2800 Canadian for l4 days. The airport pickup was smooth and in the dark my only observations were that it was an older Tahoe which had taken a front-end hit at some point as the hood was misaligned and the grill was crooked. Once I started driving I was confronted with the usual check engine light, tire pressure warnings, etc and headlights that were so misaligned I could only see about ten feet in front of the vehicle. AC was blowing warm and the centre console was held together with painter's tape. Okay, well, it did have 117,000 miles on it, but the brakes and tires were okay and it ran okay. Ish. It got really poor gas mileage, which lead to the discovery that there was a problem with the fuel filler that allowed you to only put in very small amounts of gas before the pump would cut off. Trying to put $30 worth of fuel took me over twenty minutes. When I advised them of these issues they expected me to drive it from our rental in Kaanapali down to their shop in Kihei! I told them no and they told me to have a nice day. Great. How about a car I can actually put gas in? That'd be nice. So, in essence, they're renting wrecks for a price that is close or equal to the vehicle's entire value! Don't believe you're getting a deal.

I want every person who thinks about renting from this place to know the poor ethics they have to paying customers. Kimo's car rental is probably the worst experience I have ever had. They have no professionalism and no structure to their business. Their response on other review sites are caddy, unprofessional and plain rude. They don't want to fix the situation, but blame the situation on the customer.
I rented a 2007 SUV in October. My trip wasn't until January and that should have given Kimo a few months to prepare my rental. I put in my personal information, including my credit card number. I received a confirmation email giving me details about where and when I can pick up my rental car. Because I would not arrive until 11pm to Maui, I chose the option to have the car parked in the lot and I would pay for the parking fee. There was no problem there. Except, when I arrived at 10:59pm, I called the number given to me and went through the details I was told to do on my email. I called every minute, for an hour (STRANDED IN THE AIRPORT FOR AN HOUR MUST I ADD), trying to retrieve a code to to unlock keys to a car that I thought would have been mine (an SUV that was sitting in the parking lot, that had Kimo's rent-a-car sticker on it). I went through every option on the phone possible. The emergency line was ABSOLUTELY no help. I cried, I was frustrated, and it ruined my very first night in Maui (ON MY HONEYMOON). I was forced to take a taxi to my stay place in the middle of the night (in which they refused to compensate me for).
The next morning I called Kimo's and of course every time I called, I was sent straight to voicemail (I own a phone too so I know when I am sent to voicemail manually by the person on the other line). After leaving a voicemail, they finally called me back. I explained my situation and what did they say?!?!? "We do not have you down for a reserved car. We do not even have your name" THEN WHY DID I RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION EMAIL AND WHY WAS I GIVEN A CODE TO ENTER FOR DETAILS TO GET KEYS OUT OF A CAR LOCK BOX?!? The frustration I had and showed to Kimo's did not faze them. They had no care nor sympathy to my situation. WHY? Because as I already knew, I stated this happens too often because I read reviews online. They DID NOT DENY that this happens more often than usual. They admit it!
They did not give me other options, they right away claimed to have no cars to rent, and they assumed I was okay with it. I WAS NOT. They told me to call KIMO himself and leave a message. I never received a call back from the person himself. I WAS FURIOUS. IF YOU CANNOT TELL FROM MY SITUATION THAT THIS PLACE IS WORSE THAN WORSE CAN GET, THEN YOU GO AHEAD WITH YOUR LUCK. I wish you well.
Within minutes, I finally called A BETTER AND MORE ACCOMMODATING RENTAL CAR PLACE, and then Kimo's had the AUDACITY to call my husband and claimed to have an SUV right there for us to pick up. Well if I could use words that is inappropriate, I would, but I said out loud "NO. I DO NOT WANT TO RENT FROM THEM." They are only saying it for better reviews because THEY KNOW I was unhappy.
I would never and will never again, use Kimo's rent-a-car.

[redacted]Hello,The matter has been resolved. Please close the case.Thanks.

HORRIBLE!!!! - I rented a NEWER SUV from them on the web...and when I got there they had a beat up 2002 KIA Sorento that was running rough, rusted, parts falling off, doors would not open, etc. We refused the car and went with AVIS - expensive but much happier.
