[redacted] brought his 05 Yfz450 into my shop and asked us to Dyno tune the machine. After filling out the paperwork, I let [redacted] know that if there were any problems with the machine that were not related to jetting the machine, he would be responsible to fix or have us fix them before we could...

go forward with the Dyno Tuning. I told him we would call if that situation occurred.Once we started looking at [redacted]'s ATV we realized it had several problems that would need fixed before we could put the machine on the dyno. First, we noticed that the machine was leaking oil and antifreeze. Second, we noticed the throttle was sticking, so we called [redacted] and let him know that that had to be fixed. He told us he had already replaced the throttle cable. Once we were given that information, we told [redacted] we would need to take apart the top of the carburetor in order to clean the linkage and slide, probably taking about 2 hours to do that, with an estimated cost of $140 (2 Hours labor) depending on what we ran into once it was apart. The linkage and slide was extremely dirty, but no parts were needed. While taking the carburetor apart, we noticed the spark plug cap/coil was very lose on the spark plug. This is a common issue with these machines and can contribute to the engine not running correctly. Seth called and asked [redacted] if he would like us to replace it; we had a good used part for $60. [redacted] agreed to have us put that part on, but said that he had very little money and couldn't spend much more. He decided not to have us dyno tune the machine, but wanted us to try to get it as close as we could.Once we put it back together the machine still ran very badly. Knowing that [redacted] didn't want or have much money to spend, we continued to work on the machine, trying to figure out why it was running as bad as it was, for several hours more than we charged him for. Thinking he had a possible issue inside the carb we were unable to see or find, we put a known good carburetor on the machine for testing, but we found the issue wasn't in the carburetor. We put his carburetor back on. The machine would start, but still was not running the way it should. At this point, we believed there was an issue with the engine, internally or electrically. We called and asked [redacted] what he would like us to do. [redacted] asked us, if the machine were ours, would we would ride it? --We strongly advised against riding the machine in its current condition. At this time [redacted] said he was going to pick up the machine; he didn't have any more money to spend on trying to fix it.Before [redacted] came in to pick up his machine, one of his friends came into the shop and asked us about the machine. He gave us a little more insight as to what could be the problem. He told us the stator bolts came out, destroying the stator. This information confirmed our opinion; that the reason the machine was running so poorly was probably an electrical or timing issue with the flywheel or stator.[redacted] called the shop shortly after picking up his machine. He spoke to Seth, saying it wouldn't turn over, but the battery acted like it was almost dead. It was very cold outside, so this could have been partially contributing to the issue.A few days later, [redacted] called again. Seth tried talking to him about the machine, but [redacted] started cussing at him. At this time, Seth gave me the phone. [redacted] wanted to know why his clutch didn't work correctly. I told him I wasn't sure why his clutch wasn't working; we hadn't touched/worked on anything that was related to the clutch. He was persistent that we had done something to it.[redacted] kept going back and forth on whether the machine did or didn't run and that he couldn't ride it. I reminded him that we believed there is an internal or electrical issue with the machine that we strongly recommended against riding it the way it was. At that time he started to cuss at me and said he would be calling the Revdex.com. He never directly told me he wanted his money back.We told [redacted] we would only spend a few hours working on the machine due to his money constraints, and that is all that we charged him for. We spent more than double that amount of time to try and get it running correctly for him, but after about 6 hours, we couldn't go any further without [redacted] willing to spend more money. At that point our hands were tied and we had to stop.
