Kitchen Facelifts Reviews (%countItem)

In March 2018, we signed a contract with Scott ***, Kitchen Facelifts LTD, to repaint all our black kitchen cabinet doors, drawer fronts, end panels and toe kicks (“Approximately on site completion 9 days”). This was on the basis of a sample he provided of one of our black cabinet doors that was acceptable to us and we gave him a deposit.

To date, Scott *** has NOT provided satisfactory results nor a pleasant experience. We feel he is incompetent or incapable of providing quality results, inept at quality control and has provided us with very poor customer service.

Over the six months:
• When he came to hang the painted doors, they all had drying rack ***s across the backs; we would have expected he would be aware of these before he started hanging the doors (or before leaving his shop!)
• They worked on our bare counter tops without first protecting them. We supplied cardboard.
• He somehow turned on our stove top and melted bubble wrap onto its surface. He went to clean it with a caustic solution, which we stopped and provided the appropriate cleaner.
• He took all the black cabinet doors back to be stripped and then he repainted them.
• Several weeks went by during which he said he was having trouble with the paint drying
• He asked if he could (at his expense) purchase unpainted, replacement doors of comparable quality and style because stripping them again would be too expensive. We agreed; he bought them.
• Over a few weeks he provided examples of the work but there was still an issue of the paint drying that concerned him.
• He also brought over examples that were unacceptable. In one case, he even said the door needed another coat of paint. Why bring them and waste our time.
• He switched paint manufacturers and painted the rest of the replacement doors
• The style of the doors was fine but as he was hanging the replacement doors we noticed several problems – see photos
o the painted finish of EVERY DOOR has vertical lines and a stippled (orange peel like) texture and is a matte finish versus a smooth, sheen finish as in the sample he provided and that we approved
o the replacement door panels rattle (our previous doors did not)
o the doors have a different finish than the frames because he used two different brands and finishes of paint

Additionally, he took one of our white cabinet doors to see about getting soft close hinges that would fit without drilling additional holes. The white cabinets were not in the contract to be painted. This was extra and we agreed to pay for the hinges and installation if he could get them. We added to the deposit for this.
• He could not find hinges that would fit without additional drilling – no problem.
• He LOST the white cabinet door he took – BIG PROBLEM – because no similar style could be found to match the rest of our white cabinet doors. He supplied a replacement door and its mate, but they are a different style than our other white cabinets (see photos).

Net, seven months later, we have replacement black cabinet doors that rattle and are poorly painted and we now also have mismatched white cabinet door styles. The value of our home has been negatively impacted.

Some of Scott’s responses have been insulting and insufficient:
• He called losing our white cabinet door “unfortunate”
• He left a gallon of black paint on our front porch and mentioned, and these are his words: “in case you wanted to have someone spray any or all doors in the future”
• Because his results have been consistently unacceptable, we asked for our original cabinet fronts back. He said: “they’re in the landfill,” but he never even bothered to ask if that was OK with us or if we might want to donate them.
• In one email he stated:
o “So I have responded to all the issues as they arose, and presented solutions for what I consider to be minor remaining concerns, and forgo the remaining balance.”

While he has stated he is forgoing the remaining balance, we have asked Scott to:
• refund our deposit,
• pay to have the black cabinet doors, drawer fronts, frames, end panels and toe kicks repainted by someone else because after this experience we do not believe Scott *** is capable of successfully fulfilling the contract,
• pay to re-establish the consistency of our white cabinet doors.

Scott has refused our requests.

He has said he will repaint any or all of the doors but we have no faith that the results will be different.

In short, Scott ***, Kitchen Facelifts Ltd, has failed to deliver on the agreed to contract, created other issues which have devalued our home and wasted our time.

Kitchen Facelifts Response • Nov 12, 2018

Much of what *** is saying is true, but taken entirely out of context. This is the end result of 6 months of a situation I feel completely terrible about, apologized countless times for, and paid around $ 7,000 cash out of pocket to try to correct. The contract amount to paint the black doors was $ 2,775.00 in total. I have been completely honest and transparent about being dissatisfied with quality issues along the way, but these were due to product failure, not my ability to paint cabinets. To put this in context: I re-design kitchens, most of which revolves around painting existing or replacing doors and drawer heads. I paint around 3,000 of these a year with *** advance paint (same as most of the local cabinet painters). I have a spray booth built for this purpose. Black paint contains the highest possible amount of pigment and depending on the solvent base has a longer dry time-which is called curing. If the paint is not fully cured it will be easily damaged. In the past I have used *** Advance in factory tinted black without any issues. . When I met with the *** I explained all this and was confident in re-painting their existing black doors just like any other job. I brushed and rolled the frames as promised. The black paint sprayed in the shop NEVER fully cured. *** (where I have purchased paint for 20 years) had no explanation or solution.I had the doors stripped professionally which cost $ 1,812.00. Re primed and sprayed with a different *** product they promised would cure, and match the other Black. It did not cure, did not match. I chose not to have the doors stripped again as it may affect the structural integrity of the doors or wood grain. I chose to pay $ 2,400.00 for new solid maple custom made doors to match (as closely as possible) the existing doors. The remaining costs were labor and paint. I then found a black paint that has an acrylic base, which worked just fine. I used the same product on another project at the same time. No issues. When I installed the new doors- we all noticed and agreed the wood grain in the photos was not good. I offered to have the factory rep. come, so they could be replaced if they were defective. It could have been as simple as re-sanding and spraying, but the original doors were gone 5 months, with drying time and ordering time and stripping etc;. Time was of the essence to re-hang the doors. The *** never responded to that offer. I threw all but 1 original door away. I thought replacing the doors was the resolution. I wish doors could be re-used, but no place will take them that I know of, and now 3 months later the 2nd black is barely cured. As to the white door-It was most likely thrown away by accident. My fault completely. I researched custom made matching doors- the cabinets are original to the house (I assume 20 or more years old). No longer made, that I could find.I sent color samples to the *** which they approved and purchased the closest thing available. I offered to re-spray all doors, and repaint the frames, and never asked for the second payment. I offered the free gallon of paint, only to give them the option of having the doors sprayed in the future. I thought the project was complete. Weeks later I received a letter by registered mail demanding $ 16,500.00 as a refund for the deposit, and to replace the brand new doors, and the white thermofoil doors. Pretty sure that was the first time the rattling in the doors was discussed, which would be very odd considering they have soft close hinges.So- In conclusion- I feel terrible about the inconvenience to the ***. I would be upset too-but I have offered viable solutions at my expense they are not interested in.Sincerely,Scott ***-Owner Kitchen Facelifts Ltd.

Customer Response • Nov 12, 2018

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

The pictures speak for themselves. What’s out of context?

By his own admission, Scott failed 3 times to complete a quality job of painting our black cabinets. Each attempt brought additional issues. His track record with us does not inspire confidence.

His apparent nonchalant attitude toward destroying the consistency of our white cabinets is appalling. Would you let someone back into your home after losing your property as well as failing to successfully complete a job after 3 attempts over 6 months (the contract called for “approximately 9 days”)?

His apparent lack of interest in quality is also a major concern. What quality craftsman brings purportedly finished work to a customer with obvious flaws that would have been noticed if he had taken the time to inspect the work before leaving the shop? Where’s the quality control that would have saved us all time, including Scott? How professional is that?

We would like him to be a a man and be a responsible person to straighten out the mess he has created in our home.

It is going to cost us over $19,000 to reface our existing black cabinets and return our white cabinets to a consistent style.

Regards
