KJ's ATA Martial Arts Reviews (6)

Our family has been with KJ's ATA for nearly 2 years now and we could not be happier. KJ's has become a second home for us. We have met some truly amazing people since we started with KJ's. We absolutely love the instructors and their dedication and commitment to not only the students; but also the families and community. We have watched not only our children, but also countless other children grow with KJ's and not just learn, but internalize all of the life skills taught. The leadership program is unparalleled to any other that we have seen. Mr. D[redacted] and our KJ's family have been a constant source of support to our family and are truly committed to seeing all of their families succeed not only with Taekwondo but also their home life. Mr. Durant's commitment doesn't stop at the school...we have often come to him to support various community events and organizations to which he, without hesitation, eagerly helps. This is a great place for families to learn martial arts, build relationships, and strengthen the family bond. With all that being said, I find it truly disheartening to read some of the reviews posted by former KJ's families. When I first came into KJ's two years ago, I spoke to Mr. D[redacted] about the school and what my family should expect. We were given several different options and I chose to sign a contract for the 3 year leadership program for our son; our entire family is now signed up. It seems that parents are so eager to sign a contract to take advantage of the great deals and then expect to not be held to the terms of said contract. I'd like to see those same parents sign a contract with 24 hour fitness, AT&T or any other service provider and try to cancel the contract before the term ends and act surprised when there are fees involved. I'd also like to see those same parents sign their children up for any other sport and expect to not have to pay for equipment, uniforms, camps and tournament fees. Here are a few things those families aren't saying...You want to talk about fees and costs?...Mr. D[redacted] organizes numerous fundraisers in order to help his students pay to attend tournaments. He takes time away from his family and personal life to help raise money to make it a little easier for his students....that is dedication. He believes so much in his students and is so committed to their success that he will work with them through difficult financial times...that is integrity. Want to attack his character?...Parents often call Mr. D[redacted] at all hours on his personal cell phone with problems that they are having with their children at home or school and he will find a way to work that into his leadership class. He engages in an open dialogue with the kids of real issues that they are facing and help guide them to make good decisions...that is commitment. Lastly...what these families aren't saying...is that Mr. D[redacted] has helped countless families...including their's...What a shame that all of that is so quickly forgotten

The school owner does not deliver what is promised. He does very little instructing and has the higher belt students instruct the classes. If you ask him to help your child, he will offer his private lessons for 150.00/ hr on top of the already high tuition cost you pay. This is a very expensive sport and very little effort by the owner.

The owner locks customers into contracts with no room for cancellations no matter the reason. Kids lose interest all the time and that doesn't matter. You are locked in for 3 years. He builds a wall from all students who decide to take a break not allowing them to come back. He is spiteful and is not the best interest of your child.

My daughter joined the school 3 years ago and has succeeded in achieving her black belt under the guidance and instruction of Mr. D[redacted]. I was fully aware of my contractual agreement when signing up. I believe all the instructors at KJ's ATA have the best interest of the students at heart. When starting I had no idea my daughter would go so far, prior she was a dancer, it shocked me when she said she wanted to continue in to get her black belt. She has succeeded and we couldn't be prouder. They have taught her not only to defend herself but to be confident in abilities , stand up for what's right and to set goals and achieve them. We are very happy to be part of KJ's ATA. We must also remember this is a small business, the backbone of our nation, it is not easy to be a small business now. As an owner of a small, family run business I understand the difficulties he faces. It is harder when you come to know your clients as friends and family, but the bottom line is the business needs to make income to survive, no one should be faulted for making money to pay their mortgage and feed their families.

My family has been with KJ's ATA for about 5 years now. We all worked up the ranks and became Black Belts, which is not something I ever thought I would do in my life. We started with just my daughter on the floor, but Mr. Durant encourages families to do Taekwondo together, and so you will find more families learning here than at any other school I have seen. This school is different than most, the instructors really care about the students, and want to watch them learn and grow. It isn't just about learning Taekwondo, it is also learning about things such as Respect, Perseverance, Integrity and more. This school tries to teach the philosophies behind Taekwondo, not just rush you through belt levels. Mr. Durant does expect students to learn the material thoroughly, don't expect to be handed your belt. He pushes his students to reach their full potential, and to strive to be better. And yes, you have to sign a contract when you start, but it is simple and straightforward, and every other school I looked at before joining also had contracts, it is nothing unusual. And yes, he does expect you to fulfill that contract, but doesn't every business? I would and have recommended this school to anyone looking for a good school where you will actually learn self-defense and self-esteem.

I have had my daughter at KJ's ATA for over 6 months. Mr. D[redacted] has a great 4 week trail offer for only $20.15 and allows you to get to know his staff and teaching philosophy. What impress me the most was when we walk thru the doors you could tell the family atmosphere right away. He did not try to shove a contract down our throats but informed us of the various options he has available while we were in the Intro Program. His rates were far better then any of the other surrounding Martial Arts school with ample space for parents to watch.
We signed up for the Leadership Program because we believe in what he is teaching and we can see the results in our daughter. Keep up the good work KJ's

I have been attending KJ's ATA Martial Arts for close to 7 years now. I know the owner and head instructor very well. They are 2 of the nicest and honorable people that I know. When I joined I was very overweight and extremely out of shape. Yes, when you join there is a financial commitment. What business can run without customers. But at KJ's you are not just a customer. As you train your body you are also exposed to life skills. The instructors do their best to help train the mind as well as the body. I have seen so many children over the years come out of their cocoons and blossom as young people. Students with physical problems over come those problems and become more agile and able to control their body's like they could not before training. It is a commitment. But who ever said getting a Black Belt was supposed to be easy. It is not. Testing and doing certain material is not all it is about. It is what you do after you get it. Mr. D[redacted] helped me win the World Championship in sparring in my ring last July 2015. I could not have done it without him. Was it hard, yes. Did I feel like quitting at times, yes. But I didn't. When you attend a martial arts school you will get out of it what you are willing to put into it. Do not let disgruntled parents of students who got bored, or decided it was to hard keep you away from this school.
